Working my way through all of your old videos now. Best drum tutorials on KZbin - hands down.

All your videos are very good - great. This one has been especially valuable to me. A drumming grip explanation in which an explanation of opposable thumbs is included. You explain everything in such detail, like no one else, and perfectly clearly, and geez, you can demonstrate it like no one else. James Payne, man, you are simply the best. Thanks!

I've just started learning to play and your videos are amazing! Thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos and so patiently break down and explain the whys and hows behind your play technique, it helps a TON.

Would you consider doing a tutorial for traditional grip? Hahaha I just think it would be cool to see your perspective as a metal drummer

Just took a lesson with Todd Sucherman, this is exactly the gip he switched me to.

If I use the French grip with the thumb- middle finger fulcrum, the sticks steer to the middle

I feel that with the French grip and the thumb-middle finger fulcrum the sticks both point to the middle

Thanks for your video! I've been trying to reprogram my left hand's neural pathways after 20+ years of really bad technique (I gave up on matched and played traditional for about 6 years at one point). The key point for me was taking the index finger out of the equation, I've been given the advice before of using the middle finger as the fulcrum but have never seen it demonstrated with French grip, and it's French grip I'm using to reprogram my left hand. So thank you for enabling me to have another important breakthrough!

You're very welcome David and, just so you know, I have other videos on French and German grip on my channel in case you want to check them out. Hopefully they'll help!

@@JamesPayneDrums Thanks for your reply! Just out of curiosity, have you had any students with weaknesses in extending the fingers (opening the hand)? I am finding it difficult to do so with my left hand while holding the stick and just curious as to whether or not you've seen this happen before and if you have any further advice. I have no past injuries or issues with the hand, I think it's purely a lack of mobility or strength

I'm not sure if I'm understanding your issue correctly sorry. What do you mean by opening your hand while holding the stick?
@davidpardy5 жыл бұрын
@@JamesPayneDrums I'm just talking about the action of extending my fingers to allow the stick to rebound, sorry I'm not always very good at saying what I mean clearly!

The thumb is the fulcrum in French grip. Or am I missing something?
