The German grip is a great tool to play powerful Blast Beats and Tom fills, but if done in the wrong way it can become tiring pretty soon. Let's see together how we can improve our German grip wrist motion and how it can benefit speed, power and endurance in our drumming!

Master drummer James Payne I want to thank you for your many videos.. especially this one. A few years ago severe nerve damage in my cervical spine resulted in numbness in my left hand as well as a complete loss of strength between my thumb and first finger.. I could not even tear a piece of paper.. I began to work my hand like I have for over four decades doing the usual 'exercises' with some success but it was obvious that I was done with what I do once and for all.. totally depressed.. But then you came along and began to reshape my grip and my brain firstly with the push/pull (which I love) but my left hand could not do it (I do have a very fast wrist).. The Moeller technique gave me some hope as did a couple of other lessons but it was this video on the German grip that changed everything.. including my state of mind.. Bless you for what you give so freely.. Peace James

Bill hope you are doing even better now, that is a nightmare possible scenario for me as well, as I have cervical spine damage and occasionally lose feeling on fingertips. ✌️

@@TupDigital Thank you Tup.. I suppose the silver lining is having to study my hands from step one.. With no aspirations to play blast beats at 300bpm I will be fine 😉🥁

"Middle, fourth and pinky fingers should hold the stick tight so the wrist is more relaxed" - such an important tip for a beginner drummer like me! Getting a lot more control only after 2 days of practicing! :D

Hi James, I just wanna thank you so much for all of your videos! There are so many videos on youtube going over the same topics but you are able to explain everything in a way that is so relatable and inspiring for me. I feel like I know where I have been going wrong now and watching all your videos has made me practice all the grips and techniques instead of what feels easiest! I think ill be signing up for your online course over summer when I have some free time! Thanks again buddy, I hope this channel gets the popularity it deserves!

I use to practice with aluminum sticks as a kid until they were worn out and started bending I agree and like your demonstration of holding the sticks and using rebound You really have to find what works for you Play loose and gripping tighter as you need it and using different muscles and or wrist to achieve what your playing I play match mostly now but play both styles again as I feel I need too in what I’m playing I think you should learn both match and traditional It gives you more options and feels I started traditional grip at a young age of 7 or 8 and I learned to use both as I got older Great video

Absolutely great video! Thanks! Just one question - how tight do you hold the stick during wrist motion excercises? Do you allow the stick to move a bit or you grab it really tight? I cannot find myself the sweet spot, especially that I'm trying to accept the rebound as shown in your other video... Any comment will be helpful!

Hi.. Does your fingers leave contact of the stick while playing only using wrist motion?
@JamesPayneDrums
@JamesPayneDrums 5 жыл бұрын
When I practice, I try not to, so that I make my wrists work 100%, when then I play I do, I don't pay too mych attention to those details when I play, the more I practice in the right way, the more the details will be automatically correct when I play, I hope it makes sense.

So while the sticks may be horizontal, if you look closely he is still employing the wrist muscles in the stroke. I'm thinking he open his hands to ease some of the tension and allow the rebound to create its own force?
@xenprovence6126
@xenprovence6126 Жыл бұрын
I would agree, he's in French pulling with his fingers ( to make the tempo) so it's not a pure explanation keeping to the principle he set's out at the beginning.
