Just beautiful. I am so glad the town is stubborn and that people are holding on! I wish everyone connected to the town, the very best.

Thanks so much for a wonderful overview of a tough but lovely town in a beautiful country. This shows clearly the effectiveness of the high barriers in diverting the lava flows, and on those few occasions where they were breached, it shows clearly how new barriers were erected almost immediately afterwards to continue to protect the town and divert subsequent flows. And it's mind-boggling how great the roads now are - over the surface that was hot flowing lava only a few months ago! That takes a lot of determination and some BIG tough equipment!

Thanks for sharing Gylfi, I find it sad what happened almost a year ago as I also stayed in Grindavik twice. Even if it becomes quiet again now, the volcanic cycle of some 200 years of activity on this peninsula is just starting making the future of the town uncertain too. STill I hope for the best

Great video! Glad you made it! Patience and long term thinking gives good result in the long run. It also makes better decisions and the mind and soul have better conditions to work under both in the short perspective and the far horizon view. Your video is kind of this I feel.

Thanks for such a great look at what has happened, the lava flows fascinate me in a macabre sort of way! Just dark & menacing.
@patriciamueller398618 күн бұрын
Awesome video! It has been difficult to visualize how close the lava came to the town with the exception of the flow that did get to the edge of town burning some buildings. On this video it's easy to see how important those barriers that were built were! Wow!😊❤

Watching the engineers & crews building those directional levees during the last 8 eruptions, I have the utmost confidence in them to build a terrace levee system to guide the fresh lava, and create the bases for terrace farming. You have to be a bit imaginative to understand how the levee terrace base can be achieved, and there is no doubt it can be done! After all, they have built new roads over fresh hot earth two weeks later after it flowed as lava, and built up a levee after an overflow at one point. That's not fighting lava, just guiding it away from critical infrastructures, and the beauty of the terraced lava field is, it is rich with mineral that makes vegetation grow faster than rotational crops. Grindivik has the potential to have some hefty turnips, potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, and wheat farms in their backyard. TY Gylfi, for all the contents you've shared with us, and I am always giddy to see your next video.

I was in Grindavik yesterday and pretty shocked to see everything closed and locked down. It was a ghost town. 2 years ago i was there as well and felt totally different. Also shocking to see the amount (and height) of the lava. Amazing to see though they managed to create a new road on top of the lava. Was pretty scary somewhat to drive over it. The smell and smoke still there.
@williamlloyd376918 күн бұрын
As long as the harbor and the fish processing plant survives, the basic infrastructure is in place to allow the town to survive in some form. Hopefully future eruptions won’t damage these key areas. PS - so strange to see the area surrounded by fresh lava flows. Next eruption is on the horizon
@skjelm636318 күн бұрын
Impressive to imagine the people there standing by the lava: "yep, the lava is starting to get solid, bring the Tarwagon, rebuilt the street" *vrooooooooom*. I am very impressed by that kind of resilience!
@Soken5018 күн бұрын
This town surviving so many eruptions gives it such a powerful aura with those dark ramparts, let's hope it rebounds as spectacularly as it's been hit, like a beautiful phoenix (or a more appropriate Icelandic symbol of rebirth).

I am sad to hear that soon all info about all earthquakes in Iceland is being stopped. This info as they fear it will put off people coming to your beautiful land. I believe it is having the opposite effect. For those of us who are interested watching a new area of land being grown will be sadly missed

That's not true - one particular website that displays earthquake activity in a specific way is closing but earthquake data will still be available on the Icelandic met office website.

The town looks like the victim of a bad accident, hit in the prime of life by cruel pointless fate, taped together by caring doctors to the best of their ability with black asphalt bandages, determined to rise from its presumed deathbed and limp on to a new life, but future is still painfully uncertain
