This channel is focused on Bones, Hormones, and Healthspan to help midlife women and beyond aim for optimal, not average, and reignite their spark!
The videos on this channel will be focused around helping women navigate healthspan and longevity through the lens of osteoporosis, perimenopause, and menopause. When it comes to osteoporosis and menopause providers and educators often get tunnel vision and your symptoms might get better, but if you don't keep longevity in mind, symptom improvement may come at the expense of heart and brain health.
Subscribe and follow along as Dr. Doug Lucas explores the research and clinical applications surrounding women's health.

I didn't even finish watching this video nor did I bother watching the Netflix video. I am Vegan (whole foods only I and watch sugars closely) and it works for me. I lost 17 lbs but wasn't fat at all, (now 119, 5'5") cholesterol way down, have more energy, all results positive from my choice of diet. Even my doc said, "Keep doing what you are doing" . I don't preach it nor do I listen to bias documentaries like the Netflix presentation.. Each individual is unique, what works for some may not work for another, takes some trial and error. Too many wars on the internet regarding these subjects.

Actually Dr. Doug doesn’t seem to be biased. He really digs into the research studies.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! I respect your right to eat however you please. We have created this channel to deliver evidence to our audience on topics related to women’s health, bone health and hormone health specifically. The evidence reviewed clearly demonstrates to me that a vegan diet does not benefit these conditions for most people. Our clinical experience echoes that research and what we see is typically a vegan approach to eating results in a higher contribution of calories from highly processed foods and carbohydrates. Eating a whole foods plant based diet can be well tolerated by some individuals. There are plenty of examples of people who have maintained muscle mass and performed well on a plant based diet. However, these in our experience are the exception, not the rule.

@@Dr_DougLucas "Highly processed foods and carbohydrates" are not good for anyone on any diet. Every Vegan I know, not just "some" do not consume such foods.

@Dr-DougLucas how do you respond to the numerous, in-depth studies of the esteemed Dr. T. Colin Campbell which show whole food plant based eating prevents cancer, heart disease, and many other chronic illnesses? I’m genuinely curious as I am a 65 year old, active woman who has recently been diagnosed with osteoporosis in my lumbar spine.

@Dr_DougLucas I am so looking forward to reading your book. I have an appointment scheduled for 9/12/2024 with your office. My DEXA scan shows low bone density. I sent the results to my nurse practioner, and she asked me if I wanted to be sent to an oncology center that treats and manages osteoporosis/osteopenia, and I told her I didn't even know what that means or understand the numbers fully from my bone scan. I am very frustrated. This was all through messaging. Then a nurse called me and said I need to go for infusions! WTH?! I had RNY surgery 20 years ago, and I've always had labs done and seen doctors every 3 to 6 months and they always just say my labs are good. I spoke with a bariatric sports nutritionist who was going over supplements I was taking, and she is the one that actually recommended I get a bone scan. I'm just frustrated. I'm glad I found your channel and book. 😢

Thank you for showing the bias. I'm a former vegetarian/vegan but I'm also NOT a strict carnivore either. I think people should use more logic when it comes to their personal health as well as the health of the planet. Just sick of all the extremists. The healthiest people I know, choose to eat whole foods from all areas and do exercise.

I always watch your channel for the deep dive into studies and your questioning nature exploring the findings. I would have appreciated that same evaluation of the Netflix series. The adjectives used throughout the video showed bias and, for me, hard to get past. Keep up your great sharing of knowledge.

He is biased, because he's already looked at the data. Vegans have the worst bone density of any diet group. It's difficult to get all your nutrients and protein from a plant based diet, and you are consuming a lot of anti-nutrients in the process.

Correction to comment below. Mother went blind on vegetarian diet. When discussed with retina specialist, , his first comment was I wonder how many of my patients have this as he had a high Native American practice.

Genetics is crucial. A vegetarian diet for 10 years ruined my heath. Iam a physician. A DNA test showed 8% Native American across land bridge of Alaska. I can’t convert carotene to Vit A nor plant omega 3 (ALA) to the DHA and EPA our brain and blood vessels need. There were no plants in Alaska and over centuries lost the enzymes to convert. My mother went lint because of low fat diet in assisted living before my results. My early macular degeneration has stopped with an omnivore diet. All eye supplements only have beta carotene and no Vit A.

The folks of Loma Linda are densely populated with Seventh Day Adventist. At least 98% of them never drink alcohol and never smoke. I am not an Adventist, but I have been married to one for over 25 years. (Adventist eat lots of fake meat made of gluten and consume lots of white sugar.) Many of them fast on the Sabbath and DO NOT WORK on the Sabbath, which is Saturday. Their cortisol levels probably remain low on their full 24 hours day of rest. So their lifestyle and diet can promote longevity more than the average American.

When is someone going to use genetic testing to determine which diet is healthiest for individuals?

We can actually do that to some extent in my clinic, but we will track and verify with labs because epigenetics matter!

And where does genetics and epigenetics fit in? I wish I could scream from the the rooftops that what is best for an individual depends on what genotpye they have for a number of genes. For example Apo E; 4/4s should never be carnivores, while 2/2s should never be vegans. We should be eating according to our genotypye.
