In this episode, Dr. Douglas Lucas discusses the importance of eating meat and highlights the top 10 nutrients found in meat that are often lacking in plant-based diets. He emphasizes the significance of these nutrients for brain function, DNA synthesis, red blood cell formation, energy production, muscle strength, hydration, immune function, and overall health. Dr. Lucas also addresses common misconceptions about meat consumption and encourages better practices in animal agriculture.

I was a pescatarian for decades. In every blood test, my creatine level was shown to be low (~0.5 mg/dL compared to the normal range of 0.6 to 1.1 mg/dL). None of the doctors ever said anything about it. I recently found I have osteoporosis at age 56 and changed my diet (and other aspects of my life) after viewing many of Dr. Lucas' KZbin videos. My last blood test showed that the creatine level is up to 0.6 mg/dL for the first time. Can't say I am feeling any difference in the body, but I am pretty surprised how quickly it changed once I started eating meat. Only took a few weeks of very moderate meat consumption.

I have struggled with low ferritin my whole adult life. And I can only take one, plant based supplement. From curry leaves. Last 2 years I have eaten a lot of red meat. I am 66, have ostereoporosis. Have increased my bone mass a lot, esp in the spine. Only osteopenia now. Anyway, always ferritin at the lower end. Happy if it was around 50. I do take B12. Now, for the first time, it's 88. And I haven't even been supplementing. I just had a gastroscopy, wrong spelling. I don't have a polyp or anything. I feel a need for red meat. I listen to that. I always by from free range cattle. I am having a beef salad for breakfast just now. 😊

I also feel the need for meat. I went vegetarian foe two weeks and started salivating looking at peoples arms..I had a big dose of liver for breakfast and steak for dinner. I also can't take the supplements except the vegan one ...I believe walking helps iron as well. Have no evidence for it but my iron levels were not going up till I started brisk walking every evening and then it seemed to help a lot. Guess it's a case of using it and not losing it. I had not much need for blood while sitting on my bum

@@Padraigp I have been walking and hiking since I was born. I suspect it's the increased oxygen that's helped you. Also sleep with a crack open even in winter. @@ls-l1518 nice I always like the window open for sure. Yes I'd say the more oxygen made my body realise it needed to make more heamoglobin to carry it around. Interesting view on Vit D. I increased my supplementation a while ago from 1000IU to 2000IU and noticed several things improving. However I an now mindful of not overdoing it and will try to take more breaks from supplementation especially in the summer and also seek out more natural sources.

I think vegetables aren't helping me with all of the crap they spray on them. I was carnivore and started reintroducing some vegetables back in my eating plan and got worse again. Sugar was killing me too. Ya, I really back slid! I'm also taking beef organ supplements from Heart and Soil. I plan to review my list of issues every 3 months to see where I'm at. The only thing I'm struggling with is how much to eat. I see some carnivores eating huge amounts, and I just can eat that much!

So i had to take vit D3+k2 and it went up to around 48. And that is good enough for me. Sun is good but too much sun is risky too, skin cancer and overall skin aging. No one wants that. Good points all…. But after 40 + years of vegetarian diet I can’t see eating meat again. (Occasionally I’ll eat fish, and can see logical reasons for salmon at times given osteoporosis dx.)Won’t go on about my no meat reasons…lots of reasons. I avoid cows milk cheese except if traveling, and don’t go overboard on eggs. I do eat goat cheese. Have been supplementing for 4+ years with vitD and B12. Working on completing labs so I can see what else may be needed. Thanks for pointing out not all vegans or vegetarians live on highly processed foods….we try to eat whole foods as much as possible.

Hold on, Dr. Doug. You caught my attention. I have too many patients with significant vitamin D deficiency. Invariably, my pts with diabetes, HTN, and obesity (and any variant, thereof) are D-deficient. Work-ups w/iPTH are negative in the vast majority of these pts. I boost them up w/weekly ergocalciferol x 12 weeks, or so. Then, they are switched to daily cholecalciferol for maintenance. Should I change the way I'm approaching Vitamin D deficient pts?
@Padraigp
@Padraigp Ай бұрын
So you need to do magnesium cell test or just add magnesium. Vit d depletes magnesium so if there's already a problem it can exacerbate that badly. And blood mag doesn't show this. Can cause tiredness muscle cramps sleeplessness and heart arythmias. It also helps lower blood pressure. You should also check their calcium as d can make that high in blood... so you need to give them vitmink2 to get the absorbed calcium out of blood into bone. High calcium in blood is associated with a pot of issues fibroid alzhiemers arterial sclerosis etc. Adding any supplement without consideration for others can cause consequences. The main one for d is magnesium lowering. And if youre also giving calcium tot hose patience a magnesium deficiency with high calcium can be deadly. I had this and toom tqo calcium tablets and had full body contractions contortions like I was having a seizure as well as atrial fibrillation. Two says magnesium rda 400mg and I was fine. If I stopped symptoms returned so I kept taking for a year now I can go etihout supplements for periods of time. So watch theur blood calcium and cell magnesium levels.
