There are so many myths about cancer: which specific foods and lifestyle habits increase or decrease risk, how much family history matters...
Is it true that "sugar feeds cancer?" If you eat a keto diet, do you need to worry that red meat or processed meats (like bacon and sausage) are increasing your cancer risk? (Or can keto actually be helpful during treatment?) And what about exercise? You don't need to exercise to lose weight, but what's the impact on cancer?
It's hard to know what to believe and who to trust. Watch this conversation between Dr. Westman and board-certified radiation oncologist Christy Kesslering, MD, as they dispel common cancer myths and talk about the role of metabolic health in cancer risk and treatment outcomes.

I wish there were a doc in my area that understood keto/carnivore. When I first started my doc thought I was nuts (4+ years now) until she saw the numbers improve. She left and now I'm starting over with another HCP who is a none believer. The new HCP told me "well, that doesn't work for everybody" no, it does not, if "everybody" is getting bad advice from the doc.

I was diagnosed with mucosal melanoma in April 2021. I started keto a few years before diagnosis because of prediabetes. I had Opdivo and Yervoy, surgery, and continued keto plus added metformin to further reduce insulin. I have been cancer free for nearly two years. I feel good. My blood work is really good. High D, great triglycerides and HDL, low fasting insulin, low inflammatory markers, etc. Looking back at my bloodwork before I started Keto, I see I was a bomb waiting to go off. I exercise daily too.

It's amazing to look back on past tests with a more educated and informed eye. I found I had a non alcoholic fatty liver in my past tests and no one had said anything to me. I had been on high blood pressure meds, antivirals, a long list of allergy meds. " Inflammation" was mentioned in my file but my doctor did not explain what it meant. I too recognized my health position was like a " timebomb" waiting to go off. Now I'm very aware of my inflammatory levels, nutrition levels and guard my body from insults. I hike long distances and use low weight weightlifting to build muscle mass, avoiding over stressing thus raising inflammation. I don't touch meds anymore because so many cause proven mitochondria dysfunction. For the first time in my life my allergies are gone, my enlarged heart has become normal, my blood pressure is normal, my ulceritis colitis is gone, terrible joint pain ( arthritis) is 95 % gone, terrible achy muscles , gone. Grinding depression gone, over the top anxiety, 95% gone. Breast cancer, gone All these changes were completely unexpected and unanticipated. My only original goal was to be able to breathe freely after two years of Covid Longhaulers severe lung congestion.

@Mary Harper Unfortunately, hospitals are not implementing any of his treatment suggestions because it is not acceptable. If a doctor would use something new or different from the acceptable treatment plan he/she would be stopped. For example: for deep vein thrombosis prevention every patients must be on chemical and mechanical prevention (heparin or lovenox with the leg massage). It's a standard treatment. Same goes for cancer, certain therapy must be followed. Not to mention the doctors would not know how to use the DON, they are not familiar with it. The more we hear about these options the more chances we have for change.

Cancer Code by Jason Fung is interesting, but it is less about diet while cancer is being treated than a history of cancer treatment and cancer prevention by preventing obesity. It helped me when I was first diagnosed, in part because it made me so happy that there are so many new treatments that can help. We still have far to go, but for me diet has played an important role.

What a fabulous coverage! This is a brilliant overview, of a seemingly complex and controversial topic made simple and concise by two Drs who are well versed in the literature - from its origins. Dr Kesslering gives a wonderfully concise and precise perspective with passion and deep understanding, yet also with good humour and charm. Her final remarks say it all.. “Patients are starting to wise up and realise conventional medicine is not going to save them.” I’m in that group right now with a current T2N1 ErPr+ve HER2-ve BCA myself and I have quickly had an exponential learning curve acceleration in both the benefits of the ketogenic diet and an understanding of the metabolic disease background of CA. It’s thanks to Drs Westman and Kesslering and other admirable people who are putting this information out for us to use because use it we must if we are ever going to overcome institutional bias and resistance to these Truths. Thank you Drs for your dedication and commitment ❤❤

@@mcapital5539 The only problem with this is the powers that shouldn't be won't allow us, We the People, to have access to and use DON. Thomas Seyfried states this in his interviews. If one watches enough of his videos, he gives other tips and hints on how to naturally inhibit glutamine to the best of one's ability. I believe exercise is one way. There was one interview that I seem to remember some pretty good tips being mentioned in. It was on HomeSteadHow KZbin channel. It had Thomas Seyfried, Jeff DeProsperis (currently in battle against colon cancer), Kerry Mann (I think I got last name correct, host of HomeSteadHow) and a couple other people (at least one was another cancer survivor) included in it. Jeff asked Professor Seyfried a bunch of questions. I just tried to look it up using search words HomeSteadHow cancer. I did not take the time to rewatch it (1:05:29 in length) to be sure, but it may be the video titled, Cancer Breakthrough: How Metabolic Therapy is Changing Lives. It was posted 6 months ago. HomeSteadHow has at least one other video I've seen on the channel with both Thomas Seyfried and Jeff DeProsperis in it.

Dr. Shawn Baker is a carnivore on KZbin, he is a military doctor specializing in ortho pedic surgery. I have had 2 spinal surgeries. I wish I had known about keto and carnivore before I had either surgery. The first surgery was the result of an injury on the job. The second injury was when, under full anesthesia, I was allowed to fall off a surgery table breaking my back. Carnivore definitely controls the pain in my lower back.

Can we discuss how hard it is to lose weight in perimenopause? Keto doesn't always work. Why?
@alexr6114
@alexr6114 3 ай бұрын
Stress produces cortisol and that packs on the pounds around the waist according to Dr. Robert Lustig, a research physician at the University of California. Dr. Lustig's research group did a study years ago that found that yoga reduced excess fat around perimenopausal and menopausal women's waists better than "stressful" cardiovascular disease (I find yoga stressful because it is so slow and that drives me crazy, but not everyone is the same). In addition, most women, and men, start losing muscle mass as they move and exercise less (how often did you lift your toddlers and babies when they were young each day compared to how much do you lift once your kids could walk without you carrying them?) so women burn less calories with less muscle over time.

Just read an article on my Google News feeds: "Heart Disease: ‘Keto-Like’ Low-carb Diets May Double Your Risk. New research suggests that low-carb, high-fat diets like Keto may significantly raise your risk of cardiovascular issues such as heart attack, stroke, and blocked arteries." Many of my Keto friends are abandoning LCHF (Low Carb High Fat) eating due to this study in the UK " According to research presented on March 5, 2023, at the American College of Cardiology’s Annual Scientific Session Together With the World Congress of Cardiology, a “keto-like diet” was associated with negative effects, including higher levels of LDL cholesterol, the so-called “bad” cholesterol. Additionally, it was linked with a greater than two-fold increase in the risk of cardiovascular (CV) issues - such as heart attack,"

Thanks for asking :) I follow a mostly carnivore style ketogenic diet (mostly ribeyes, eggs, bacon, salmon, added butter and only occasional low carb plants--typically only when I am not at home or when entertaining others). I keep track of all of my labs (glucose, insulin, trigs, HDL, CRP, ESR, LDH, GGT, etc). I found that when I was more plant heavy keto, I could not get my insulin under mid-high 5s but when I dropped plants for even just a month, I got it down to mid 2s. I also found that I was having issues with oxalates (spinach and almonds wrecked my gut) and sulfur (cruciferous veg) and then subsequently histamines. All improved/improving with optimizing digestion and eliminating plants. This is why I don't believe that there is only one right keto diet. Always working to optimize for the individual.

Seyfrieds book is "Cancer as a Metabolic Desease ". It took me three months to go through carb withdrawals and get fat adapted. I never thought I could eat nothing but meat. My poor gall bladder had stones because it had been so unused and it was painful to get it up and running again. If you have cancer you are in an EMERGENCY.state. Drop all processed foods, wean yourself off of the veges and pick up the elimination diet of all rumanant meat with egg yolks and lots of good animal fats. No one who has cancer is nutritionally fit or metabolically fit. Cancer cells are so tormented by the poor diet and other insults that they actually unmor themselves to escape. They send out hormones signaling SOS to other nearby cells. Our body inflammation is the attempt to dilute the inflammation. The elimination diet of all meat and salt has been used for decades for hard to treat cases like epilepsy. It takes time to heal the body after decades of abuse. My body is still changing after 15 months of eating a Proper Human Diet as Dr. Berry says. Some peoples body's developed a level of morbid obesity in a desperate attempt to cope with the overabundance of carbs. No matter how many carbs I ate I don't think I could get morbidly obese, but I definitely was very metabolically dysfunctional.

If you are at the position of doctors and are convinced that keto / fasting is helpfull, why you do not propose parallel enforcing method parallel to regular, some people will just ignore and some will jump since they will do anything to get better. Ten you should build evidence - just get better results then other doctors - the proof methid works. There is no need to check fasting / keto in cancer by performing large costfull clinical trials - some people will just perform this test.

There is a growing body of literature and review this data in many of my presentations. The main issue is that most trials are funded by pharma. No one is interested in funding diet trials so these tend to be very small, single institution trials and then the masses continue to say that there is not enough data. Very disappointing but we keep trying to spread the word.
