I wrote down all my costs for tools, materials and components, and ended up around 1000 EUR all in all. Loaned some of Dad's tools as well, so increase by perhaps 100-200 eur on that price. For a fuöl custom build that aint that expensive. Planning is key.

Your build is giving me so many ideas, planning on going with a Ryzen APU since it'll basically be an HTPC & emulator system for the living room plus without a dedicated GPU it should be much easier to build. Those 3.0 headers in the front definitely definitely will be a much better upgrade over using an adapter for the original ones that came on the XBOX.

Thanks for your kind words! Yes, having some original ports would have been nice, but that would also have required soldering. And considering I didn't manage to get the button-LED to work, it kinda shows how terrible I am at electrical work. :P It would also have required adapters to use those ports then. I am not fond of adapters. ^^ Thanks again!

I have a step by step on my channel so you can see how i soldered the ports. I have also done a playstation 1 raspberry pi. I do want to do this again with an itx board like you have. I think i would keep controller ports 3 and 4 as xbox controller ports and 1 and 2 as usb ports. That was f-ing awesome! I was thinking of starting a build with one I got from the DI for $10, but I sort of just got half fast at it and ordered parts I moderately researched. I may just cancel/ return them, then look into doing something similar to what you did. except for my goal was for it to be and emulator machine with the same specs as the xbox 360 and ps3, so it can run xbox and older classic game emulators. I also plan on replacing the controller ports with usb for universal use. I mean heck I even forgot to calculate the PSU and it came first! I need 375w and for some reason I got 200w! Now I need to return it and re-plan my system.

Those 3 side fans, are they sucking in or blowing out? What is your highest temp?
@Wistbacka
@Wistbacka 4 жыл бұрын
In the initial assembly, as you saw in the video, they were blowing air into the case. But after some thorough testing, I realized it was better to have them suck air out of the case. The airflow in the case is admittedly quite atrocious, but I have been too lazy to do additional mods to the case the past two years. 😅 Highest temp? Let's just say throttling is a real thing.... Especially for the GPU. But as a media center with light gaming like Rocket League at 1080p medium/high it is more than enough. Pubg 1080p low on the other hand is too much for it... Runs well for 30-40 minutes, then the frames start dropping.
@HeadShoht
@HeadShoht 5 жыл бұрын
That's cool as hell, what are the temperatures tho? And it would've been cool if you showed us some game play, maybe even with the original Xbox controller lol. Dope video tho
@Wistbacka
@Wistbacka 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, mate! Yeah, I should. But at the time of filming, I was too eager to get the video online that I didnt want make the creation process any longer. But as you predicted, temps arent the best. Especially not in the summer. In both furmark and prime95 I will hit the thermal max and get throttling. Gpu is the main issue, for obvious reasons. While temps cant handle Pubg, Rocket League and lighter games is no issue. It works great as an HTPC. I have been thinking of adding some extra vent holes ontop, right next to the blu-ray, but I have been too lazy for that. Xp Thanks again for the like and comment!

@Wistbacka
@Wistbacka 5 жыл бұрын
I cannot comment on this, as I have not tried. There has probably been a lot of people trying this. The issue with laptop motherboard is the lack of standardized connectors for hard drives or such things. But I do believe with a lot of research you can do it. How would you connect the E-GPU? I assume you mean external GPU? Because if it is first gen i3, it will not have thunderbolt 3, or NVM.E M.2

While I admire your ambition to make your own xbox pc, if the xbox works, I would highly recommend not mutilating it. You can easily find new cables and controllers on e.g. eBay. If you, however, would like to have a go, I can send you my hand-drawn designs for the xbox. 😃 And if you dont care about having an optical drive, there is always the design that Linus Tech tips made. CAD designs can be found on LTT forum for that one, I believe.

Other, in the schematic, I have drawn an 12.5 mm thick ODD, but I used a 9.5 mm bay, not sure an actual 12.5 would fit. I also never used a single slot, full-width GPU, but a two-slot, but half-width GPU instead.

Nice. I don't mean to criticize, by why not wire the power button to the power jumper? And why not wire the eject button to the optical drive's eject button? Also can we see the back? Also why didn't you run the GPU cable under the card to help with airflow?
@Wistbacka
@Wistbacka 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment! 1) I wanted it to be big button: on/off, small button: reset 2) is there a way to wire the DVD eject button to a dvd-player like that? Afaik there isnt. 3) would have become much more difficult to mount the 90 degree riser card if a cable had to run behind and beneath it, and if I have had to lift up the GPU enough to run the riser cable directly to the 90 degree adapter it would have interfered both with the mobo and optical drive. As could be seen in Luke's airflow test on LTT, cables really dont affect the airflow. The worst offender for that here is the optical drive and the fact that the xbox's original side air intakes are minimal and very restrictive to airflow.

How did you get the clean cuts for the top vents on the case? Dremel, hand saw or is there a case with those vents?
@Wistbacka
@Wistbacka 4 жыл бұрын
First of all I apologize for not replying sooner. For some reason KZbin only sends me messages about replies to my comments, not when someone comments my videos... 🙄 Yes, I used a dremel-tool for that. First step was to drill lots of holes that were as close to each other as possible and almost as wide as the original cut-outs/fins of the xbox. Then with the dremel-milling tool I just milled down the rest, and as it is plastic that was quite a fast process. Only issue was that the plastic tended to melt and get stuck in the milling tool... Thanks for the comment and for stopping by! Hope you liked what you saw!

@Wistbacka 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah... For intense gaming there is some thermal issues. But for htpc stuff, it is okay. The space between gpu and disk drive should be sufficient though. The issue is proper intake and exhaust in the chassi. But safe to say, running prime95 + furmark hit all the thermal limits on everything. Not gonna lie. 😎😎😎 Throtteling at that point is an understatement. Pubg also makes it throttle, but Rocket league and xcom 2 is no issue. Anyway, thanks for dropping by! Hope you liked it.

@Wistbacka
@Wistbacka 4 жыл бұрын
The HDPLEX is a DC-DC unit, and can only receive 19 volts, and puts out 12 volts. The big power brick is an AC-DC psu that converts that raw 230V (europe; or 110V USA) to usable 19 volts. E.g. every laptop has a smaller, similar DC-DC PSU inside of them, to which you connect an external power brick. A normal PC power supply has both the AC-DC and DC-DC units inside. I hope this helps. 😊

Hello awesome design and build. But you didn't mention how you modded the metal inside housing to fix the video card and the motherboard. Also you didn't mention what you did to the outide plastic housing to get everything fitting correctly. Can you please tell us what you did?
@Wistbacka
@Wistbacka Жыл бұрын
Sorry for a very late reply. 1) The inside was modded quite heavily with a lot of cut-outs in the inner heat shield. All using a dremel and drilling. Any metal pegs were removed, and hole for rear IO shield and side fans were cut to specs. Inner heatshield in the top shell was completely removed and discarded. 2) As for the outer plastics, again just a lot of cut outs and drilling. Any protruding plastic bits and pegs were removed from the inside. E.g. the two center screws were removed and only now uses the corner screws. Made additional air intake in the top shell. 3) custom made stuff was the mobo stand that elevates the mobo to fit ssd below it and also stiffens up the chassi. Also a very janky looking scaffold for the ODD, and just some simple wood carving to make holders for the new USB 3.0 front ports. I made hand-drawn 1:1 scale blueprints for this; as mentioned in the video, this was an over 2 year long process. Actual manufacturing took me 2 weeks. I planned on making a full video on this, but never got around doing it. And since I have kinda lost the PC building interest due to firstly the bitcoin boom and all the price increases and then just moving on to other expensive hobbies like music and cameras. The key here were that 2 year patience; looking up specifications, making 1000 of measurements and then being extremely careful as I did not have much money to spend. Components + Materials + dremel ended up at almost an even 1000 eur. Plus Dad's welding skills and welder and sandpapering machine.

I custom designed a small ODD holder out of sheet aluminum, and epoxy. The wood stand offs are glued to the aluminium tray, and is the only thing glued/permanently fixed in the entire build. The ODD is then attached to the tray with M2 screws (i.e. ODD can be swaped), and the tray is fixed to the chassi by screws attaching to the wood stand offs. It was one of the most important goals of this build, that every component must be swapable in case of failure or upgrade.

Also read this: www.dropbox.com/s/yrf3g8nvf8ycmtc/developer_specs_atx2_2.PDF?dl=0 At page 13 you can see much more details. Remember to leave some space between the rear of the motherboard and the rear wall; otherwise the mobo will press up against the IO-shield. I also suggest you to register at smallformfactor.net to get best feedback and help when it comes to small builds like these. The community is awesome! Good luck with your build and thanks for dropping by!

Or did you literally mean HOW I did it? In that case, I just dremeled away all the plastic from the case, and did the cut-out with a dremel in the original heat-shield.

@@Wistbacka thanks for replying, both comments are really helpful, never done this sort of thing with my current pc, but want a small factor pc rather than a mid size tower, and if I can hide it away in a Xbox then it's an added bonus :), have you got a list of the parts you used by any chance? I've got an SSD, ram and small graphics card, just haven't got a small mobo, or that small power adapter you have, I've got a standard motherboard and big power brick, cheers for the help, I'll make sure to sub and like you're videos! 😁

@@Wistbacka haha sorry I forgot to check the description, I need to see where to get some of the parts, as I live in the UK, and I have an Intel CPU instead of an AMD, so that counts the motherboard out :( cheers for the help

If you was to remake this today what hardware would you use?
@Wistbacka

I'm sorry for the extremely late reply. I would try to find the most powerful components that can still perform at this TDP that these components do. I would also underclock at least the GPU if possible, because it does run hot. Most likely the CPU underclock would be necessary too. But since this mod was designed to fit standardized parts, whatever you want is possible. But sure this was the answers you were looking for?

im considering doing this without the odd, with an i7-7700 and with a saphire gtx 1070 instead (mostlikely underneath an itx motherboard intaking through a hole in the bottom of the case) i just need to make sure ill have enough clearance to stack my 1070 with a mobo on top of it and a low profile cpu cooler on top of that lol, whats the lowest profile cpu cooler you would suggest and do you think my idea is pheasable?
@Wistbacka
@Wistbacka 4 жыл бұрын
1) the Noctua NH-L9i is pretty much unrivaled for ITX builds, no matter if ask me, TekEverything or OptimumTech. 😉 2) The only way you can fit a gpu beneath the mobo is by having a single slot card. The only high end cards made with single slot coolers are Quadro cards. I actually looked at this as an option, but quadros are so freaking expensive. The best thing if you dont use an optical drive is what most ppl do, which is to install a low profile gpu like the one I use, but in a standing layout. Alternatively, you place it like I did with a riser cable and 90 degree riser adapter. I will return to this question asap, after digging through my old plans and drawings with all the measurements to help with the fitting of parts.
@Wistbacka
@Wistbacka 4 жыл бұрын
Here's a link to my original hand drawing, where you can see the measurements I did and what is needed and how much space there is. If I did a new version of this now, I would NOT make room for 4x 2.5" SSDs, but only for 2, making it possible to lower the mobo with 1 cm and increasing the airflow to the CPU significantly! @@Wistbacka thanks dude i ended up getting it all to work but had to extend the top of the case by about 5mm to fit my dual slot 1070 under my z270i, other than that the nh-l9i worked perfect. good luck with your channel n shiz

@@Wistbacka nah i didnt, and i managed to extend the faceplate vertically by laying cable ties horizontally (smooth side outward with the ends chopped off) and glueing them in place with epoxy stacked two ties high. any unruly ones that wouldnt glue properly eventually got melted on carefully with a soldering iron, i may make a forum post with some pics and link it here but im going to rebuild it all into a lian li lancool2 mesh as my 3.5" hdd wouldnt fit and is outside the case plugged in atm. i was going to buy a 2.5" to do it but also didnt have enough length for one of those either lol

I made one of them. Not exactly the same, but functionally similar. It's nice but I now would like to SELL it.

I could never bare to sell mine. Too sentimental and proud of it. And mine is fully upgradable, so it can still retain its HTPC-functionality as long as mITX exists as a form factor. I am hoping the RTX 2050 will come in an LPX form factor with lower tdp but same performance as the 1050ti, so I could get the system to run cooler. I am very interested in seeing your take on an xbox-pc project. Any links/documentation on that one?

Lol maybe. I have gotten a few comments on that irl. I just dont know why ppl react so much on wooden parts like they would be bad and not premium enough. Wood is amazing for this kind of projects as it is easy to shape and cheap. Wood was used for: USB-port attachment pieces Feet/spacers for PSU and optical drive Spacer beneath GPU Spacer/attachment for 90-degree riser board I have no skills in CAD and 3D-printing so thus I cannot use such materials.
