In this video I walk you through the full rules set for Basic Battles that I have come up with in order to play tabletop skirmish games with my children who are between 5 and 7 years old. Kids this age are right on the cusp of breaking into tabletop miniature games, but at this point the rules sets of games such as WHFB, WH40k, Mordheim, Regiment of Renown, War Cry, and Kill Teams are still a bit too complicated and the games take a bit too long to play.
In response to this challenge, I have come up with a set of rules that is both basic and really fun as well as strategically challenging. The rules are built around two phases: 1) The Movement Phase (moving and charging using a d12) and 2) The Combat Phase (using d20s). I have play-tested this rules set extensively and it has proven to be really fun as well as something that is on an appropriate level for 5-7 year olds. I would love to get you feedback on any improvements that could be made to the system to make it even better. Please leave some feedback in the comments below!
One thing that is great about Basic Battles is that you can use any figurines/toys that you have lying around. For example, dinosaurs, dragons, cars, figurines, even rocks! Whatever you can find you can throw down on the table, grab a few dice and some measuring stick, and have a great time with your kids!

Likewise here in Japan. I use Lego Star Wars mini figures. I use the felts as well and some trees, Rocks, bushes and small buildings from Lego. ❤

This is spot on. I always cringe on a f/b group when some guy declares "Im going to play legion or 40k with my 8 year old: Its like, nah man you need to kit bash your own simplfied rules because like you said their attension spans are not there yet.

Totally! 😊 I am starting to feel more and more like our adult attention spans are also beginning to wane, so this could be a good system for both children and parents (and all adults!). Perhaps like “training in gaming attention” before we try to tackle or return to more complicated systems. ⚔️🛡️🔥

This actually heavily evokes the Chainmail Fantasy Supplement, especially when you mentioned "Dragon vs. Dragon" as a scenario, and the other "Fantastical Creatures" as options. I really like this in general, especially the fact that it's a "universal" system that you can use with literally any figure, which is actually what I've been looking for for a while now.

That fact these don’t exist already is astounding. The hobby is so gatekeeper-y. There’s HeroQuest and that’s kinda it. As someone who struggles with numbers and rules, gaming is extremely difficult. A lot of people need a more accessible version of the hobby. Nice work!

When I was a kid my cousin and I played with little green army men. We'd call attacks (green guy attacks tan guy for example) and flip a coin. If you call it right the guy lives if not he dies. Realllly simple but when we were like 7 it worked well.

Wow, that's great! I also played with the small green army men, but we were not as creative. We would set them up on opposite sides of the hall like pins on a bowling alley and they just roll marbles until only one side was remaining standing! :) Thanks for the great image and the nostalgia! @@GrayArmyGaming We had a sandy 12 foot circle area in the backyard where the little above ground pool would go in the summer. We'd set up the army men on either side and would stand on opposite sides and throw this plastic rock that came with one of the play sets. Figures knocked down would be dead.

This is great. I've been doing the same, creating my own rules to play with my kids. I made my rules similar, but we only have one phase: either you can choose to shoot or move (tanks, cars, infantry etc). Each player takes it in turns to move one figure of your choosing at a time. In one cycle of play, each figure can only be moved or shoot once, until the cycle goes back to the first player. This makes it more tactical, you can react to others movements or whatever . My kids love it.

Nice ruleset, I think it should also work well for a fast paced skirmish game with adult players. By the way I think it would be really easy to add a "ranged attack" option : same rules than the charge (d12 to see if you manage to touch, and the attack only affect the first unit it reaches), but without moving the shooting unit. Maybe it's already what you did for the stormtroopers vs. robots skirmish?

Great rules and I agree on the need for a ranged attack system. Maybe some sort of difficulty the attacker tries to beat based on the distance with a d20 roll with a defense die (maybe a d6) that increases the difficulty if the defender has cover, etc.

I've had to simplify wargaming for kids and I usually adopt the 4+ system. Using a d6 it's 4+ to hit, wound and defend. For movement I don't use measuring tools. Just the miniature's base size (which is usually 1") x4 making movement quicker and less fiddly. Actually, I confess, I use this system when playing solo skirmish and I'm too lazy to follow rules. !#~*! 🙂

Hi! Good idé but I dont understand the wounds its 2 points between 17 & 19 but he only suffer 1 point.

It is double the wounds on an attack roll of 20, so if the attack goes through it causes 2 rather than 1 wound (similar to a critical hit in D&D 5e). 17, 18, and 19-though good attack rolls are not critical and thus (were they to go undefended) would still only cause 1 wound. When charging into battle one gets 2 d20 attacks. Thus, in one charge one has the possibility of doing up to 4 wounds (4 wounds = 2 successful attacks for charging and both are 20s critical hits, thereby causing 4 wounds).

@@GrayArmyGaming Sir, in your video you mentioned that when the attacker charges it rolls 2D20 and the defender can only roll 1D20 because the attacker has momentum, what if the attacker and the defender have already encountered and there is no room for the attacker to charge and they are facing CLOSE COMBAT, how many D20s should the attacker roll to attack? @@user-jc3dt7nb3c Great question! If nobody has charged and everyone remains in combat, then attacks and defense are rolled with only one d20 (no momentum from the charge). Because of the massive advantage that charging provides, sometimes it is more strategic to charge out of a combat and into a different one where you would then get the charge bonus (even if the remaining combatant would get an attack of opportunity on the figurine leaving combat). Great question! In this version of Basic Battles I did not have a ranged attack option factored in. HOWEVER, I am currently working on Basic Battles 2.0 where there will be a ranged attack option! I am currently play testing two versions of the option to see which one works best and has the feel of simplicity I am looking for. Keep your eyes out for when the next video on Basic Battles 2.0 drops! All the best!

Hello! Thanks for the visit and the question! I have not yet had the time to sit down and write out the rules… BUT!!! I am working on a Basic Battles 2.0 Rules Set based on viewer feedback. My hope is to put out a new video with those revised rules and post a PDF at the same time.
