• FULL RULES! Basic Batt...
In April of 2020 we released a simplified, yet exciting rules set for war gaming that works really well with kids between the ages of 5-10. As we have discovered from the positive community response, this rules set has nevertheless been popular among wargamers of all ages. Needless to say, we are extremely excited that this project has proven such a success!
Basic Battles, however, is far from perfect. In our own play-testing over the past year-and-a-half we have come across several areas for improvement. Moreover, numerous viewers have written to us with very insightful suggestions for how to make this simple game system even better. As such, we have gone back to the rules and worked out a revised version: Basic Battles 2.0!
FOR THE FUTURE OF GAMING!

Hi, I realize this is coming incredibly late, but do you still need d20 dice (and/or other sizes)? I'm about to move to a retirement community, and have to pare down my stuff. In this case I have a LOT of dice of all types. And depending on the kinds of figures you use, I probably have some of those I can send your way, too. When I ran a wargaming group at a local school about 10 years ago, I made sure the kids went home with rules, figures, and dice. I don't know now whether any of them got use out of the stuff--I hope so. And if they didn't, their parents might have: my group was the only one in the school's history that had a waiting list (which I think included several fathers who wanted to play!)

This is somewhat familiar in theory to C&C/ Clash of Spears rules that I use. I love the added complexity of the ranged attacks. Also, another experiment might be giving one kid 4 units that defend at 3 vs another who has 1 or 2 units that defends at 6. Quality vs quantity! Great job!

I have heard of Clash of Spears, but never played it. I will definitely have to check it out! Thanks for the tip. There are a ton of variations for dividing up points (quality vs. quantity, as you wrote-love it!). I have not been able to playtest enough to try out tons of different options, but hopefully all of you will be able to try out some different variations! I look forward to hearing from you regarding which setup has been the most fun! 😊

@@GrayArmyGaming Clash of Spears was a bit too much for me because Im over 60, play solo, and dont like too much cross referencing of rules, so I use a simple system based on commands and colors ancients rules. I like your rules, if they’re good for kids, they should work fine for old dudes as well! As for quantity vs quality…i tried my rules with a horde of Britains attacking a Roman cohort, using the CCA rules, and I thought the Romans would lose terribly, but they held them off. It is very cool to see a system work! I like your rules because they are universal, which is what I was working on as well with the CC adaption. So I could use any miniatures from the period and do a battle. I would started some rules for using the minis from Twilight imperium to fight a space battle, and had a few ideas like yours but shelved it to work on other game ideas. I think your rules would do just fine for them.

Hi, I'm loving everything you guys are doing. I have been trying to put on games designed for kids and newcomers at the big wargaming conventions held on the East Coast (Cold Wars, Historicon, and Fall In), but with only mixed success. My themes have been historical, which attracted few kids (history? What's that?), but a lot more adults than I expected. (Gettysburg? Yeah, I've heard of that.). Your rules of course solve the kid-dilemma by being easily adapted for such things as Fantasy and (especially) Star Wars! My hope is that once they get involved in non-historical games, historical alternatives will look a lot more attractive. I have 2 built-in lab rats (5y and 7y grandsons), which will help me test out whichever themes work best. Many, many thanks!
@GrayArmyGaming
@GrayArmyGaming 2 жыл бұрын
That is awesome! Thanks for sharing! What I have noticed with my own kids is that they always get really excited about a great story! And that is exactly what history is about-great stories! I am totally with you there on the historical front! If we can get the kids interested and invested in the stories (with even a bit of historical flourish here and there-like the fictional Private Jensen who has to sneak his way through enemy lines at Gettysburg to bring his commander a crucial message, but who gets caught up in the larger battle), then the historical war gaming will be no problem! I wish you all the best with your gaming! 😊👍

Great ruleset! I had one question, had would you prefer to balance ranged and melee units? Would you make the ranged units weaker or unable to charge into units? Just a thought I run it by. This is referring to the small skirmish rules.
@GrayArmyGaming
@GrayArmyGaming 13 күн бұрын
@@Mcsjjcollins Thanks so much! I would probably weight the initial troop selection points differently. For example, maybe a ranged figurine could count as 3 points and a melee as 2. That way, it could balance out. Another way is to give ranged attackers fewer wounds. The easiest option is just to make all ranged or all melee. Enjoy the game! 😊👍
@Monduras
@Monduras 2 жыл бұрын
How do you balance out the number of minis if you adjust the hits for ranged? Would the ranged side have double the minis? Using your example of 6 vs 3 hits for melee vs ranged means I’d have to have 2 minis for ranged to balance the total?
@GrayArmyGaming
@GrayArmyGaming 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks for your great question! I would try to keep the mini numbers equal on each side (say, 5 vs. 5), but I would account for the relative difference in strength/ability by assigning ranged figurines half of the wounds. For example, one side (only melee) could have 5 figurines at 6 wounds each for a total of 30 wounds, and the other side (melee + ranged) could have 5 figurines at 3 wounds for a total of 15 wounds. Were each side to mix it up with their 5 figurines they could still assign 6 wounds to each melee and 3 wounds to each melee + ranged. In the end, this rule may need to be tweaked to find the right balance (such as 6-2 wounds value or 6-4), depending entirely on how the ranged figurines perform in relation to the melee. Hope that answers your question! 😊👍

Nice updates. I think the ranged attacks worked well. Can a figure that has both melee and ranged attack options who is base-to-base in melee with the enemy choose to use a ranged attack against a different enemy and if so does the adjacent enemy get a free opportunity attack against them? If multiple units on one side are attacking a single enemy and more than one attempts to flee does the enemy get opportunity attacks against each or is there a limit per turn?
@GrayArmyGaming
@GrayArmyGaming 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks for the great questions! Here is how I would play the two situations you asked about: 1. If a figurine is in combat it will be too preoccupied with fighting that it won’t be able to shoot at an enemy outside the combat. As such, only non-engaged figurines are able to shoot. 2. In any given movement phase where multiple opposing figurines are leaving combat, the enemy figurines are allowed only one attack of opportunity each. As such, if one suspects multiple opponents will leave, it is possible to wait to use one’s attack of opportunity for an enemy against which the attack may prove especially powerful (say, if it would be the last wound on a figurine and thereby take it out of play). Hope this clarification helps! 😊👍

These rules are great! Do you have any recommendation for shooting an enemy in cover? Maybe something like -5 to hit, or giving the defender a second (or third) d20?
@GrayArmyGaming
@GrayArmyGaming 8 ай бұрын
Thanks so much! Great question! -5 could be a great option. Would it be too OP to give the attacker disadvantage (roll 2 d20s and take the lowest?) if the one being attacked is in cover? At long range with cover the attacked would thus get advantage to dodge and the attacker would have disadvantage to hit. Maybe?? Do the toys need a base? What is the contact rules without a base? would it be just touching? What if it is a dinosaur with a tail sticking way out there?
@GrayArmyGaming
@GrayArmyGaming Жыл бұрын
Great question! In most cases without bases it is pretty clear (like with cars or LEGO guys). With dinosaurs or figurines that have long appendages we have always played that contact is measured in relation to the body. Do you have a pdf of the rules?

Thanks so much for the visit! A rules PDF has been on my To-Do list for a few weeks now. Hopefully, when things calm down a bit with work and other commitments I will be able to get some time to produce a good document. I want to make sure that it is easy to follow and makes sense. So, short answer: not yet, but hopefully in the coming weeks! Thanks for stopping by!

I’d love to have a PDF of the rules set as well. I’ve played two games with my 9 y/o using my old DND figures. We’ve played using V1 and V2 of the rules. He had a blast, tho to make it more fluid and fast paced we combined out move and combat phase and did it per figurine. So each figure got to move and combat, then the next, and so on. I found my kid got bored (blame it on electronics, lol) when going through a phase of movement and waiting for combat. Overall, great opportunity for some father son bonding, so many thanks. Here from Texas.

@@stephenchavez5225 Thanks so much for the feedback! I have actually been playing around with alternative activation (one figure at a time) in order to keep the gameplay even more engaging. I will be releasing a video soon where I try it out. It might be a good change for the next update! I am really hoping to get a PDF done soon. Hopefully things will slow down a bit more with my job now that we are heading towards the summer. I will definitely keep you posted. All the best to you guys over there in Texas! 👍😊

Can you play this with one piece per team

Absolutely! Like an arena-style death match! I would recommend playing on a small space with maybe 3 wounds. FANTASTIC IDEA! If it is OK with you I would LOVE to try out your idea in an upcoming video! COOL!!!

Why d 20 for combat and not d12 or d6?
@GrayArmyGaming
@GrayArmyGaming 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question. The d20 allows for the fun mechanic of critical hits on 20s and critical misses on 1s (5% chance for each). If the same mechanic were used on a d12 or d6 the critical roles would be much more common and thereby less spectacular and special. The d20 seems to get the right balance of something extra interesting happening 10% of the time.
