I live in Belgrade. The food here is outstanding (I'm American). The best hamburger stand in the world is walking distance from our apartment. I am totally serious; the best hamburger I have ever had. The bakeries here are fantastic; the savory confections are the best, like 'pie'. We and most people shop at the many open air markets where farmers and such sell to the public. We get all our fresh cheese and vegetables there, all local. The meat here is out of this world as well, the butchers and meat stands or markets have a massive amount of everything imaginable; mostly pork, but also veal and lamb (chicken as well but not in huge amounts). I love Serbian food, super high quality and all organic (in the main).

Do Serbian hamburgers have ham inside?
@Percopius
@Percopius Жыл бұрын
@@gurusalami7261 Well, the minced meat patties (hamburgers) are pork and beef (in a 'secret' mixture, along with spices), so technically, yeah. I have had chicken stuffed with ham and cheese, which is typical, at least for the burger place close to me. Everyone makes a gourmet burger, which has chucks of cheese and stuff in it, so I would think chunks of ham would not be uncommon. Also, there are schnitzel burgers, hammered flat pork, breaded, in a burger.

You guys are back in Serbia!? Nice to see yours vlogs again 🙂 3:40 Im sure you already know, but much tasteful breads are in bakery, not in supermarkets. 4:58 Plasma powder is for child food or for making cakes. 8:40 One of the most frequently prepared salads in Serbia is made from mayonnaise. 11:28 Pate with bacon flavour. 13:15 That price is only valid if you brought an empty glass bottle and gave it to the woman at the checkout. If you don't have an empty bottle, they will charge you a deposit, so your beer is more expensive. Of course, when you drink beer and bring the empty bottle, they will refund your deposit :) Me, I dont like Zaječarsko pivo, best Serbian beer, imho, is LAV PREMIUM. _One tip: if you are interested in which products are of Serbian origin, look at the first 3 digits of the barcode. For Serbia they are: 860. If the barcode starts with some other numbers, the product is from another country, which you can easily Google._

Guys, the price of bottled bear is so cheap because you suppose to return these bottles. Actually, they probably charged you for them (we call it kaucija, similar as caution you pay in court). Actually it's form of very cheep deposit as guarantee that you will return the bottles. When you return the bottles, you get your money back. If you own some bottles you just bring them, show to stuff working there and you can by the same amount of bear without paying for bottles. It's just to motivate recycling / reuse of bottles.

Maxi or Mega is still something "big" and they belong to Delhaize, the same group that operates "Food Lion in America. And about the flour, vegetable oil, or rice sections, there are, certainly, similar sections in the supermarkets in Romania and everywhere. I'm surprised you missed them in Timișoara. Canola oil is virtually unknown in these parts of Europe. Sunflower oil is the norm, along with the olive oil, if you go a little bit more south, in Greece.

@@dzonikg Yugoslavia was light years ahead of Romania, before capitalism. Still, Delhaize had the same goal in Romania, as in Yugoslavia. The regular grocery stores in Romania were called "Alimentara". They were medium to small size stores, located mostly at the groundfloor of the buildings. They disappeared during the nineties, as the state was selling or hiring all the premises it owned. Delhaize started by opening „Alimentara” size stores all over Bucharest and, later, in the big cities. More recently they moved to open bigger supermarkets and "concept stores".

Yes, they're "big" because they have a wide range of EU products available (which are the only ones that can be trusted or worth buying in Serbia, in order to avoid deceptions). What is shocking is that we still have more fun, eat better, dress better and travel more than other EU countries. How is it possible?
@mrgalaxy396
@mrgalaxy396 Жыл бұрын
Maxi is kind of a bougie supermarket brand here. There are much cheaper options such as Cash & Carry where you can buy in bulk a lot of products for a cheaper price. A lot of people still either grow their own produce or buy them from the countryside since they have family/friends there and the prices outside Belgrade and maybe Novi Sad are a lot cheaper (that's why the national average salary is so low, Belgrade salaries are some 20-30% higher for the same job). But yeah, produce prices are generally higher than in most of Europe due to use importing a lot of stuff (despite being able to grow so many things here) and being outside the EU. Especially with inflation now it's tough for some people, but most people can still afford it since there are cheaper options as I mentioned.

It's imported, though, I believe from Slovenia. These metal rube packages haven't changed for last 40 years, so it's a kinda vintage, old school thing. Just a few notes: Thomy is a premium Swiss mayonnaise, and Rio Mare is premium Italian tuna product ;) Also, this shop seems to have a really small selection of mustard, which is strange. For Zaječarsko, they've also charged you for the glass bottle extra (check your cash register bill). There is a print on the price tag, that says that you need to bring your own empty bottle, to exchange it for a full one, otherwise you are charged more for a bottle. So in the end it is more expensive than a can :( I think that an extra charge for a glass bottle is 20 dinars, but it depends from store to store. Great video, though.

Hehe, you are getting the catch. Actually best mustard was that with "C" in small bags, they cost only about 20 cents, and best mayo is Thomy classic, similar price in similar sizes. Get bread from "pekara" section (was on your right side, that's freshly baked in-house) instead of packaged or imported. For pate's - go for liver ones or turkey ones. Carnex and Argeta are the best. Serbian wines are expensive bc private vinaries sell them, but for cheaper go for Montenegrin Cabernet Sauvignon or any of "Plantaza" brands - they are good old school quality for $5. Oh, yeah, and we don't have olives, so all olive oil is imported and insane priced - just get sunflower one, because we have too many :)

Average payment in Belgrade is about 80000 dinars per mounth. There are also people who work even for 40000. So imagine how expensive is this for us. Average person spend from 20000-30000 dinars only for food. Maybe for people from other countries is not expensive. But most of them work for 2000-3000 euros (230000-330000 dinars). In terms of food quality it is average. There are more expensive markets, where you can buy great food, and some local stores like Aman, or Sumadija market, with horrible quality food.

Excellent presentation of a Serbian supermarket, very fair. As for glass bottle bear. It is cheaper because you have to normally come with the empty bottle to recycle, otherwise you actually have to pay more. Check the receipt 😅

Zajecarsko glass bottles are cycling around much more because there is a return policy in smaller stores where if you have empty glass bottles to give to the store it is even cheaper to buy them because you don't pay like half of the price for a bottle, or have to leave caution fee at the store if you don't return bottles... It's basically because all the retailers just send glass bottles back to the brewery in Zajecar, where they get refilled and used again...

You need to have empty glass bottles for 0,5 liters Zaječarsko beer. If you dont bring empty bottles you pay the bottle around 30 cents, so you probably paid that beer around 1 dollar. When you return empty bottles you got 30 cents back for every bottle. Or maybe they didn't wanted to charge bottles when they saw you are not from Serbia, and you probably don't know for bottles. There is always tons of spare bottles everywhere. So every serbian home has at least 100 empty bottles of that type, and plastic crates for 20 bottles (gajbe za pivo). There are also a carriers for 6 bottles. Most of 0,5 liter beers in glass bottles in Serbia are returnable and because of this price is lower. Other sizes, like 0,3 liter glass bottles are not returnable, you don't need empty bottles but price is slightly higher than 0,5 liter.

Chipsy is the serbian name for Lays. Both are owned by pepsico, so that's why we don't have Lays in Serbia. They are essencialy the same thing with a different name.

Thanks for the videos, guys 🥰 Btw, Maxi supermarkets chain belong to a Belgian-Dutch consortium and supermarkets chain “Delhaize” (pronounced as del-eh-z, or del-è-z, the stress is on the “e”). That’s why you saw some of original Belgian products in the store with Delhaize branding. This consortium owns the supermarkets chains around Europe under the names Delhaize, Maxi, Albert and some others. 😊

That meat you saw close to burgers (pljeskavica) are actually ćevapi. Plazma in powder is used for cakes but it is also used a lot to just mix with milk, you choose how much milk, if you like it more liquid or not. The other plazma powder was just slightly different version that people use when a "post" is happening (no eating dairy products, meat (except fish), anything with fat)

7:22 : This Oil with a tree branch in it is what is used for a "Fondue" which is a mix dedicated for a tiny "frying machine" where we drop small pieces of meats or vegetables on it. It's very popular in the French Speaking areas in Europe especially in Belgium, North-East France and Switzerland. The brand "Delhaize" is the main company which is based in Belgium. It seems to be a Belgian import product since it has the French/Dutch label.
