That was... the most raw reaction to this episode I've ever seen. Mustang is my favorite character in this show - the way he handles grief over the death of his best friend and the dynamic he has with hawkeye is just so perfect. The "terrible day for rain" line is great but I think it overshadows Roy' rumination on alchemists and the temptation to attempt human transmutation. He's seen what an attempt at human transmutation can do to you, after all, he's seen the Elrics, and he knows that they didn't even get their mom back, and even so, standing in front of Hughes' grave, a part of him is seriously considering taking that risk.

@CosmicGhidorah27 күн бұрын
The temptation enters Mustang's mind briefly because he's grieving and at his lowest, but the difference is that he's mature and intelligent enough to throw away that temptation and not act upon it. He's able to empathize with the brothers because of his own grief and says something like alchemists are terrible because all grieving ones seem to go straight to "how can i use my power to reverse my trauma?" So while the thought entered Roy's mind, I don't think he ever considered acting upon it.

There's 2 classic things in this show that almost every anime fan knows even if they haven't watched this show: the talking Chimera, and "It's a terrible day for rain." This show is so good at twisting the knife. They spent so much time in the first 9 episodes building up this seemingly somewhat minor character only to kill him off and make it the catalyst for *so* much. There's no minor characters in this show. They're all important and now they're ALL in danger. The cut between Hughes death, Ed Al and Winry on the train, and then immediately to the funeral is so devilish.

I knew you were gonna bawl your eyes out at this episode, and I don't blame you one bit. FMA is one of those shows that I absolutely love, but it always manages to tear me apart during these moments. Hughes' death shattered me the first time I watched, and Mustang's reaction did too. "It's a terrible day for rain" is a heartbreaking line for two reasons. First, he's saying it because of his tears, which is the obvious implication. However, Mustang is notoriously useless on rainy days, due to the nature of his alchemy. He feels useless during Hughes' funeral, because he couldn't do anything to save his best friend. Even knowing what's coming, I still tear up every time I watch this episode.

As an older, lifelong anime fan, my first introduction to the FMA universe was the original 2003 anime and I didn't even get a hold of the manga until after I had finished watching all of it. In FMA (2003), Hughes lasts until the 16th episode, and his death is perhaps even MORE crushing, because 2003 added a miniarc where Ed prepares for his state alchemy exam and stays with Hughes and Gracia during that time--and the birth event (which by now you've seen of course, being in the next episode about Rush Valley) was transferred to Gracia giving birth to Elicia ON ED'S 12th BIRTHDAY while the boys were staying with them. Hughes' death was super soul-crushing...and yet, even suspecting it was coming in the canon story, it's hard not to cry every time I read the chapter or watch the episode. One of the very, very saddest deaths in anime/manga history.

During the funeral, you see everyone's reaction. The focus is on Gracia and Elicia of course, with a little on Mustang. But we also see the rest of the soldiers there. Worth noting, while Armstrong is sobbing and Mustang is all stoic, Bradley is shaking. You have it in your head that he is evil. Maybe he is maybe he isn't. But it doesn't make him heartless.

Ok, now you can be scared at every deadly fight of the characters. Mission accomplished. No need to kill more.

OMG Scrubs "Eagle!" reference! Also I like the episode title "Separate Destinations" and how it ends with the narrative splitting between what happened to Hughes and the boys going on with their lives blissfully unaware.

Well, yeah, this episode is the second litmus test for people watching this show. I haven't seen your reaction yet (watching now), but I really feel for you, getting the double whammy on this particular day. Much love and support, Angela. It's a terrible day for rain.

Aww girl noo! I saw the thumbnail and right away the tears came back (I’ve seen the show five or six times but Hughes never fails to break me)😭

Yeah… at the end of last episode when you was talking about much you love Hughes and how his character is source of joy and happiness (paraphrasing a bit) and then said you was gonna watch another episode, I immediately started dreading it for me. I literally said to myself “Damn… why couldn’t be next week? She just had rough time with this episode (9) so immediately watching the next one (10) is probably gonna be very rough for her.”

I'm a fairly new viewer of your channel. I've watched all of your Fallout episodes and I'm caught up on this now. I've watched FMA:B so many times, and now whenever I get the urge to watch it again, I find a reactor that is watching it for the first time. I can never get a "first view" again, so I like seeing other's fresh reaction. I just have to say, I'm really enjoying how much you catch and make connections while watching.

"You know who I love?" Before you even said it I said Bradley lmao. Putting your powers to good use. This episode, and the one in the original Full Metal Alchemist series, still get to me. The show builds Hughes up so much so fast, it's meant to be extremely shocking.

And there it is. The most devastating episode of the series (in my opinion). This episode and the one with the little girl and the dog are the two episodes that make me sob the most, every time without fail. Narratively, Hughes’s death serves an important purpose. It shows the audience that no one is safe. There is no such thing as plot armor in this show, and the bad guys are playing for keeps. They made us love him so that they could take him away and give us that anxiety of “if they can kill Hughes, then who’s next?!” Hughes will always be one of my favorite characters in any media. He was a wonderful husband, a fantastic friend, and a devoted dad. Rest easy, Hughes. 💔❤️🩹

I really appreciate the long and thoughtful opening and ending commentaries each episode. I've seen both Alchemist shows a billion-thousand times each, myself, but it's fun to see a new fan think about what's happening, expressing their thoughts and and asking questions. It's refreshing and great. Aside from the reaction, itself, _that_ alone is genuinely fun to listen to. Enjoy the journey! Incidentally, that said, I'm also a sympathetic crier, so respectfully go to Hell for getting my tears flowing here, dammit... lol

To lighten the mood a little bit, a story I found in the anniversary book. So, there's a series of companion novels (light novels?) for FMA, not written by the author, but she does oversee the lore and stuff for them(they're not required reading don't worry). Anyways, apparently during one meeting with the author of the novels, the novel author made a comment about liking Hughes (and possibly wanting to do something with Hughes in the next book?). At which point Arakawa-sensei(the manga author) and her editor just went dead silent and started nervously sweating and looking at each other. Because, this whole conversation took place BEFORE Hughes died (it's not specified how far before but it sounded like no more than like, a couple chapters, so it was very close to happening). And the poor novelist was just like 'what's wrong, what's going on, what aren't you telling me?????'. Like, talk about the worst timing ever.
