I've always found Master Oogway's death/Transcendence to be incredibly beautiful, and I love how his entire charachter embodies the philosophy of Taoism perfectly. His name comes from the idea of Wu wei, or "effortless action," The idea that through meditation, clear thought, and even inaction, one can achieve perfect harmony in all things. Basically a "go with the flow" type of perfection of letting the nature and will of the universe guide you rather than using conscious thought. That's why Oogway is so entirely nonplussed by Po landing right in front of him and becoming the dragon warrior. In Taoism, there are no accidents. There is simply the natural flow of the universe guiding everyone. I think that Oogway, who we've seen has the ability to defeat Tai Lung easily, chose to remove himself from the equation entirely so he could give Shifu and Po the chance they needed to achieve their own form of mastery.

He's the quintessential essence of Kung-Fu.. using what you have to your advantage. In the last battle he used all the things he learned through out his experiences. Using the woks in a cup game with the scroll was reminiscent of Shifu with the dumpling. Using a tree as a weapon or the firecrackers? All things he used to try and get into the festival area at the beginning. He literally is using the most powerful tools one can have in their arsenal.. knowledge and experience. He dreamed of being a warrior, and he had it in him all along.. he just needed to believe in that.
@astrangeviking17429 ай бұрын
i always feel bad for Tai Lung. brought up from basically birth to be the dragon warrior. constantly told he would never fail and would be the greatest. like he says "trained me till my bones cracked". how many years of hard work did he do training under shifu? how much pain did he suffer? he was filled with thoughts from someone else that he would be the best among us. a mythical being of legend. we see this happen to many golden children who get treated like a demi god only to fail at something then hit rock bottom. the way the movie makes it out to be after Tai lung did what he did he was thrown in prison. not one time did Shifu visit him. he was left for years in a dark pit. dealing with i assume abuse from the guards. abandoned by his father. Tai Lung is not only a Villain but also a Victim.

A tragic villain.
@SeanBoyce-gp9 ай бұрын
Even if the guards were kind or even indifferent to him (and there's visual evidence they weren't), being suspended in paralyzing agony for years seems...rough. Now, it's possible that his sentence escalated because he kept hurting people trying to escape and so the paralyzing harness didn't come along until later. The scene of him confronting Shifu is so mid-century Wuxia cinema combined with some real character moments. I believe that Shifu couldn't bring himself to visit Tai Lung because of his shame and disappointment. it would have been as much disappointment with himself as a failure for not teaching Tai Lung better, which would have doubled down every time he thought of his former student (constantly, with Tigress present). I alwso love that it's an echo of Oogwai's proclamation: one often meets his destiny on the road he takes to avoid it. By hiding from his shame and disappointment to avoid metaphorical pain and destruction, Shifu faces the threat of physical pain and destruction when he is ultimately forced to confront his shame and realize it's too little, too late.
@borjankosarac36459 ай бұрын
There’s other lore reasons for it, but Oogway recognised that Tai Lung had no self-belief; his arrogance was merely a front for his own insecurities and he thought the Dragon Scroll would complete him, but in reality he never would have been satisfied. @Agent-KD6-3.78 ай бұрын
@@borjankosarac3645 not really. Dragon scroll isnt a thing. Tai lung would be furious and he was once he gets the scroll. All that was for nothing. its mostly shifu's fault. Personally speaking, I love the touch that when Po first realizes the scroll is empty, apart from showing him his own reflection, he says "it's blank", hinting that even without the knowledge he expected to find in the scroll he sees himself as a blank slate that can be filled. Meanwhile, when Tai Lung sees his own reflection in the otherwise empty scroll, he says "it's nothing". Even after having become the first person to ever master all one thousand scrolls of kung fu, Tai Lung still sees himself as nothing without the knowledge of the dragon scroll. Another great detail showing how much Shifu built Tai Lung's purpose and destiny up to becoming the Dragon Warrior is his name. Tai Lung translates to 'Great Dragon'. It also tracks that Po is extremely food-motivated. In nature pandas spend 90% of their waking hours eating.
@samuelvincent5579 ай бұрын
I, also, love that at the end, after Po tries to sit and meditate with Shifu, then asks if he wants to get something to eat, Shifu says yes. It showed that he was not stuck in his way anymore, and was willing to share in Po's way, instead of making Po sit silently like him.

This is why you gotta give respect to Po's dad, both Tai Lung and Po were adopted. Yet, Po recieved such pure constructive and unbiased love from his father. Yes, his father would have loved for Po to be a noodle man, but never forced it on him. His room is adorned with all his interests and favourite things and when he realizes Po doesn't want to follow his direction, he loves him just as much. Meanwhile, Shifu loved Tai Lung in a very toxic way, he wanted to mold him into this perfect warrior and did not allow Tai lung to explore his own interests. He filled his head with things that weren't even set in stone, telling him he's destined for greatness. Without specifying that Tai Lung is already great just for being born, just trying his hardest is great. He sheltered Tai Lung and when Oogway rejected him, he didn't even comfort his son. Tai lung didn't have a real purpose in life or a place he still belongs, he was still an orphan while Po had a real family. After the rejection, Shifu should have left the Jade Palace with Tai Lung. Not forever, but clearly Tai Lung needed to experience a world outside of Shifu's control to finally find himself. He didn't even know why he wanted to be the dragon warrior, he just had to be it. Just as he took Po to train, Shifu should have left with Tai Lung.

So there is no secret ingredient for the Dragon Warrior. Aside from darkness in your heart which is literally something everyone has. Tai Long worked so hard his entire life to become the Dragon Warrior and to make his father proud. As a result he molded himself into the perfect vessel for the dragon warrior. But because he had darkness in his heart Oogway denied him. At that point Tai Long had wanted to become the dragon warrior and do genuine good but Oogway didn't even give him a chance to overcome his darkness or even help him overcome it. He just said "no sorry all of your hard work was for nothing and I won't help you overcome your darkness so you can be worthy" Anyone in their right mind would be pissed off beyond belief. Oogway essentially pulled the pin on the grenade that was Tai Long's darkness and made it a danger. Fun fact that imagery of him attacking the village was added in last minute otherwise more people would have been on his side. And when Oogway stunned him they didn't even try to help him or change him (or confront him while he was attacking the village). Both him and Shifu could have kept him in line if he tried anything else. But no they just said screw this guy just let him rot in a horrible prison for 20 years and not even give him the privilege to move a finger. And when Po has him beaten and barely able to move what does Po decide to do? He decides to skadoosh him into oblivion despite the fact that he doesn't have the strength to fight back anymore. Yeah no Tai Long was done so dirty.

I love this movie, and Jack Black did a fantastic job of bringing Po to life. When it comes to the fight between Po and Ty Lung, it reminds me of an old saying. "The greatest swordfighter does not fear the second greatest. He fears the worst." Po's style was a complete unknown to Ty Lung. It was, mostly, stuff that Po was making up as he went. Improvising with whatever was around him, and using his strengths against Ty Lung. His resilience, his rubbery flexible body that allowed him to shrug off and even redirect attacks. Ty Lung had mastered the 1,000 scrolls. Learned everything his masters had to teach him. He knew every attack, it's colunters, and the counters to those. That was why he could take on the five, he could predict everything they were going to do, after watching them fight for a few minutes. But Po couldn't be predicted. And Po was so new, that he couldn't read an opponents future moves, he just reacted in the present.

Master Oogway is my favorite character in this series. I also love that they have the whole trilogy figured out from the start. You can actually see a nod to that in the first scene after the dream sequence.

The Five are named and styled after five styles of Kung Fu. Thats why their names are just their species while everyone else has names.

Thanks for reviewing this. Kung Fu Panda isn't just a great animated Kung Fu movie -- its a great Kung Fu movie, period. Full Stop. The music, the message. It's great film making. Love your reactions/reviews!

This movie really lets Shifu off easy for how terribly he failed Tai Lung as a father and teacher. I get that Tai Lung never understood humility, but he was groomed to want to be the dragon warror to please Shifu. To top it off Shifu named him "Tai Lung" which translates to "great dragon". If Shifu defended Tai Lung with 1% of the same effort he did when confronting Oogway over Tigers, Tai Lung would have turned out different. Hell, even his apology was weak as he did it when forced too, he never intended to ever talk to Tai Lung again.

Gah I just love this movie so much. Tai Lung is by far my favorite villain in the series. A deep character with a troubled past. Him representing all of Shifus faults as a teacher where Po represents all the positivity and good Oogwai taught him. That Kung Fu isn’t just strength and power.

The fact that you know Ian McShane from John Wick and not Deadwood means you haven't seen Deadwood, which means the next series you need to react to is absolutely Deadwood.

I really like how they made a nod to Wan Hu. I first heard of his story when I was a kid. And of course, being a little kid, I wanted to tie fireworks to a chair and test it out. "The story concerns an imperial Chinese official, referred to as Wan Hu. In order to realize his space dream, he sat on a chair with 47 rockets tied to it, holding a kite in each of his hands, and flying into the sky. But the rockets then exploded, which resulted in the ultimate failure.[5] There are also variations of this story" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wan_Hu

The second Kung Fu Panda is the best in my opinion. It goes much deeper into Po's childhood and where he comes from and I recommend to keep some tissues ready because it gets emotional!

The movement of chi being cyclical, I think Po's style of "rolling with it" compliment each other perfectly. I think Po's style represents Akido with its theory of the redirection of inertia most closely matches. When Ugway transsubstantiates into pure energy, is even a mirror to what the "wushi finger hold" does to Tai Lung by forcibly dispersing his chi ie; his being/body, which is what I think the producer was trying to show the audience, from a distance, at the end there. They touch on the theory of the eventual culmination of human(animal) evolution with the ability of the mind to no longer need a physical form, being able to exist in a purely energy based state. Like in the movies "Powder" or "Akira". Even after a dozen viewings I still like this flick.

Kung Fu Panda was very popular in China. So popular in fact that local content developers and production houses started coming in for a bit of criticism. The criticism went something like this: “Why aren't we able to produce animation so good?”

This film is beautiful, from the art and animation to the kickass fight sequences to the heartwarming message of self-acceptance. Great stuff. The only small complaint I could really level at this one (at least off of the top of my head) is that they somewhat underutilised Jackie Chan as Monkey. Would not have minded him getting more lines. This film actually did so well in China that the film and entertainment ministry (or whatever, I can't recall the proper term) there had to study it to try and figure out why a western-made animated film captured elements of chinese historical culture, along with the hearts of chinese audiences, so well when their own animated features weren't performing nearly as well. Regarding characters names in this - The Five are indeed just named for the animal they are. Oogway also just means Turtle, and Shifu means Master, which is amusing.

Father/child relationships in media can get me teary-eyed and this is some of the best material around. Also, as to the voicing done by Angelina, I think that has more to do with who Tigress is as a character rather than reflecting on Angelina's work, but I have a love of these movies that might lead to some personal bias.

This movie is full of jewels. - First and foremost, as Xyran Zhao says, there is this exemplary conflict of Taoism vs. Confucionism in Wugwey vs. Sifu. - This is not the first work we have of Jackie Chan and Lucy Liu together. They made Shanghai Noon too. - Also, this idea of "getting what you are good in and turn it awesome" is kinda of a trove in some kung fu styles. Even Bruce Lee's Jet Kune Do walks this path sometimes. - Maybe ironically, have actual masters struggling to win against complete unknowable people happens in chess. Professional players know how to win easily when faced by other competent players. When faced against people who barely know the rules, they still much probably win, but struggle a lot more. Same thing Tai Lung faces when fighting against Po. He has no idea how to win someone whose blows don't work upon. - IMHO, the actual plot twits of the movie, is that Tai Lung is the victim of the story. He was virtually tortured and had no other life goal besides being the dragon warrior. Sifu and Wugwey are the actual villains for making him what he became. Sifu for doing it, and Wugwey for his taoist approach in "doing nothing about it".

shifu made quite a lot mistakes... still tai lung choose to go the evil path... and to stay on it.... so don´t try to ghostlight him into a victim, he took his anger out on everyone, that had absolutley nothing to do with it... if his anger would have sayed on shifu and maybe oogway, ok.... but hee took it out on innocents... so it is tai lung who is the vilain...

@@Metzwerg74 I honestly don't remember Tai Lung attacking civilians. He even sparred the messenger duck/goose. He washed the ground with the guards, sure. But judging by the way the rhyno guard steps on his tail, it really gave me prisioner torture vibes.
@Metzwerg749 ай бұрын
@@thiagohayashi9936 so you never really watched the movie ? only reactions i guess.. or did not pay attention ? go and watch the full movie, the part when tigress tells po the full story of tai lung.... no he did not attack them on screen... but he still did... but you´re right about the guards, they more or less got what they deserved, but again, i would bet, that it would have been 2-3 at most, that treated him bad and still hegot back at everyone, which clearly showed his evil nature again... and he spared the messenger, because he needed him to spread the word of his return.. and by the way, tai lung never mastered kung fu, he excelled at the ways of the exterior kung fu, thechnic, strenth, agility and focus but completely neglected the inner ways of kung fu, theself discipline, thecalmness and the acceptance.... so because of that, he truly was not worthy of the dragon scroll. but instead of asking himself, where did i fall short... he deceided to lash out at everything, blaming his shortcomings on others and striking at everything in reach...
@thiagohayashi99369 ай бұрын
@@Metzwerg74 In the said scene, Tigress says "laid waste to the valley". Tai Lung then shows up destroying furniture and... Houses? Again, no civilians harmed. Probably because of PG-13, but doesn't seem to me he was killing people around. Even the people around him in the flashback only flee scared of him, but even Tai Lung blows seem more aimed to furniture than actual people. So... His villainous act is... Vandalism? If he didn't kill people on screen, he simply didn't. The movie doesn't seem scared to showing it since Tai Lung himself is killed at the end. Also, probably not the better idea to go in a killing rampant for the title of dragon warrior. But yes, I give your conter theory some credit. He probably un alived a lot of people. But that is off screen so maybe people consider it invalid. Or not.
@thiagohayashi99369 ай бұрын
But yes, that's something the movie doesn't answer (because it don't need to answer). Can you re apply for the dragon warrior title? Like, yes, Tai Lung failed. Could he try again... After some time/quests/journey later? It maybe could be an interesting journey of redemption but they killed him before that. It could even (maybe) be easier than teach Po from the 0.
