I had mine fitted a year ago, house beautifully warm 24 hours a day for less money than having the heating on two hours in the morning and 4 hours in the evening and then chilly during the day.

Edc 1569 to save people googling, in 2023 they had 1.9 million households in uk. I am one and yes we have turned the lights off for an hour and delayed meals or charged our ev and turned on washing machines in response to price incentives, not because we need the money but to acknowledge the need for load balancing.

@@stephengreen8986 Hopefully you have some sort of backup battery supply. A simple LiFePo4 battery generator is less than $100 for lights and small stuff to around $500 for a decent sized one. You don't have to install anything - just plug devices directly into it. I have a couple light flexible solar panels I can hang by the window or over the porch railings to re-charge them. I expect that this is how Pakistan is transitioning to solar.

I was in Shanghai a few weeks ago, and the thing that stood out was how quiet the roads were. Not how few vehicles there were, but how quiet those vehicles were. At least 50% of cars and light vans were electric, but there were more 2 wheeled vehicles than 4 wheeled, and every single one of them was electric. The air was lovely and clean as well.

@treehugger3971 My first trip to Beijing was 2013, and you couldn't see the gigantic, state run billboards from 100m away due to the smog. Now, the air is already noticeably cleaner, not just due to EVs, but also thanks to the removal of filthy powerstations and industries. The clean-up in China shows what can be done.

I started with a subscription EV in 2019. This led to a myEnergi charger and solar panels a few months later. Bought my second EV in 2020 and installed an Eddi. 2022 ASHP by Octopus after taking part in the winter challenge showed U could do low and slow heating. My total bill with Octopus is now lower than it was in 2019 and no gas or petrol. EV was my lightbulb moment. Oh and Fully Charged helped a lot. Thanks Robert and Greg

I would be interested in seeing your Investment Math on this ? As I am not sure spending say 100,000.00 for Energi Charger, Solar Panels, Eddi, and Octopus, Electrical Panel Upgrades, and a battery storage is worth it. That might take you 50 years for a return on your investment. Your kids will enjoy it but Solar Panels don't last that long.

@@arenean85 The problem with solar panels is possible shading from "anything". Not long after my panels were installed the farmer next to our development built "the barn that can be seen from space". This equates to our panels not seeing the Sun until gone 10a.m at this time of year. Hours wasted as no o/p from panels. Properties sit in shadow too. Anyone interested can amuse themselves by Googling up planning law for agricultural sites.

Just to add anecdotally to what Greg said about the used car market, I wanted to change my 13 year old Golf last spring. I got a 3 year old/33k miles Kia e-Niro fully-loaded for less than an ICE Golf of the same age and mileage, and with less kit than the Kia, about £3250 less than the on-screen price. I am completely happy with it, have driven to Scotland and back from the Southwest, with no issues. I am getting way better than 4 miles/KWh (before heading into winter, admittedly). Charging at home on Intelligent Go for 7p/KWh and I'm running dishwasher and washing machine overnight on the same low rate. ASHP in the game plan now. I hesitate to get solar or batteries, because of the trajectory of prices, but at the same time I don't want costs to stop me from decarbonising. We need to let go of the notions of return on investment, the how-does-this-benefit-my-bank-balance question - the return on investment is a planet that our descendants can inhabit.

I was at the Everything Electric show Farnborough for 2 1/2 days and actually sat-in on this talk. Watching it back, and also my observations from the time that I was at the show, it is evident that the audience is 90% 40+ age group. Also, from the asked question from the panel in many other talks that I attended, it seemed to me that the majority of attendees were already EV owners, had solar and/or storage batteries, and either had or were seriously considering having a heat pump installed. They are preaching to the converted! They need to focus on targeting the younger generations, sceptics , fence-sitters and the curious. Also mp's and other influential people should be invited to join the panel on such talks so they can be quizzed by the public. Manufacturers should also be targeted....those who were exhibiting there cars there were almost exclusively Chinese....a taste of change that is on the horizon for sure. Kudos to Greg Jackson for taking time out of his Sunday to attend. The number of attendees to the show was, in my view, disappointing.

On the point of oil companies fighting back, Shell have taken over ownership of all our local lampost EV chargers in west London & doubled the prices!! I wish there were more like Octopus ..or some legislation against oil & gas companies trying to slow EV ownership. I live in rural Scotland with 4 wind turbine farms within 20 miles of my house yet I pay the same price for electricity (and sometime more!) as someone in Central London with no renewables anywhere nearby so I challenge Greg/Octoous to change my tariff to reflect the lower cost of producing electricity in Scotland over England

There are quite a few comments about heat pumps and their expense etc. I live in NZ and heat pumps have been the norm here for years, most households have them, and are compulsory if you are a landlord and rent the place out. In the winter it keeps our house snug and in the summer they cool the air, heat pumps are standard kit in this country.

Whilst on one of their motorways not motoring at the speed limit I glanced a striking pink car catching me up, as it passed it was multi coloured, it was an Octopus Energy Car! I’ve been with Octopus for over 3 years, I suppose I really took a shine to them when they sponsored Vintage Voltage, although the comp sites put them top anyway. After a failed try last year I took the plunge to EV due to unbelievable discounts, went straight to Oct to get the correct charger for OIG, smart meter fitted swiftly and now up and running at 1.75p a mile. Annoyingly I have only recently upgraded to a Worcester Combi so switching to heat pump isn’t yet justifiable. But I have a chalet roof house with a north-south ridge and front/rear flat dormers so Solar is very viable. Upshot is I switched to the right company at the right time, they consistently deliver on their promises and I certainly think I am on for the ride. But watching my favourite EV Guru talking to the boss of Octopus tells me not only am I set up nicely, I’ve got much to look forward to. If I saw Greg out and about I’d definitely want to buy him a pint, what a fascinating bloke with an incredible spoken presence. And Robert - same goes for you mate - you made me want am MG5!!

Regarding V2G, Tesla is the one that surprises me the most. They sell Powerwalls for battery backup but don't add it to their cars. They have Autobidder already so there's nothing stopping them taking a small cut of revenue from sold electricity, essentially making the car a subscription service for them but one that essentially costs almost nothing to the owner of the car compared to the amount of revenue they'd generate from buying electric at a low tariff and selling it at the peak.

I wish Greg would roll out an EV charging network or partner with some of the existing ones. I am loving charging at home for 7p but that experience is sour when I have to charge away from home. We do have an EV, Solar, battery and ASHP so we are all in. From what I see outside the Tesla chargers BP are the biggest charging network where I travel but they want north of 80p per kWh. I understand there is VAT and there is a lot of investment to put these chargers out there but until we get the public chargers closer to 40p or less. An EV only makes sense if you can charge at home.

Hi Robert, I have a question for octopus Energy: Why is it the in other countries? The government has maintained the design of the smart meter in order to provide the consumer with a greater level of information than we experienced in the UK? My understanding is that here in the UK, we got the Energy companys to design the smart meter resulting in a meter that acts in the interest of some of the large companies to the detriment of the consumer, My question to you is are you working on a new generation of smart meter for the UK based on the principles of optimising information and cost for the consumer. I’m going for moving over to octopus Energy but my wife is resistant because of the smart meters. She also does not like the number of Wi-Fi we have in the house and doesn’t want a smart meter. Look works on Wi-Fi but would be acceptable to have one that works on a local area network cable is that a possibility?

When energy bills hit the roof due to problems with fossil fuels, I did wonder why my electricity bill went up in the same way. Had wind and sun suddenly become more expensive? No of course not, if anything they were getting cheaper. So why was I paying more and where did the money go.

Yep, in the UK every single electron is priced as if it came from gas 😢 Some of that extra money pays for nuclear but I have no idea where the rest goes.

A big chunk of the money goes back to the government. Wind and solar farms mostly run on a 'contract for difference'. It was intended to protect developers if the price went down, but if the wholesale price goes up, the government gets to pocket the difference.

EVs are great but progress on the grid is slow. I look on National Grid (I am Kate) site and the wind turbines produce electricity that doesn't seem to be stored on batteries yet. Pumped storage is I suspect historic and long established. Please tell me if I'm wrong. I would like to be wrong.

It very much makes sense that high energy demand industry should relocate to where the energy is less expensive. Government should give some incentive for industry to locate near cheap reliable efficient energy.

Speaking as someone who is Pro Solar, while solar panels may have halved in cost over the last 18 months, what has happened to the cost of installing them over the same time frame?

You'd have to get a quite from some local installers. We had Solar panels put on our roof in May/June last year, got detailed quotes from two different companies, chose one, modified the set up plan a bit to squeeze some more panels on, and went for it. They should be able to give you a free quote showing the cost per panel, mounting system, labor costs etc.

Some fantastic insights there. Octopus is one of the best suppliers imo, but there are 3 octopus installed smart meters in my family which don’t work, meaning that we can’t get smart tariffs. Get a grip Octopus, or you’ll lose your customers goodwill.

Does the issues lie with Octoous or the smart metering operating companies (like SmartDCC). If the meter is unable to communicate (mechanism varies by location), then there is not much Octopus can do about it other than raise complaints with the smart meter operating companies. This is part of the issue Greg raised about locallity and using new technologies, as they can provide devices to read the meter more frequently locally for analytics but billing is subject to regulations that need to be updated to catch up with technology and services available.

Spot on regarding misfiring smart meters. In our case I discovered that the time on our meter was 20 minutes out ie running slow. I only found out by accident when participating in an Octopus “free energy hour”. Initially the Octopus staff didn’t seem to understand what I was getting at. I did then get introduced to an Octopus employee who fully understood the issue. He contacted the meter company and within three days the meter time was reset remotely. Octopus are in my view the most innovative and forward thinking energy company out there. True they sometimes have communication issues which I put down to their continued rapid expansion. I can put up with that because when I have had an issue they have fixed it.

I'm glad he's out there spelling out clearly what's at stake when the US and Europe try to stall the transition. At this point they're just dooming their economies to have a major disadvantage in the long run. There's so much babble about "disruption" these days, yet it baffles me that so few people point out how hugely disrupting the energy transition will be. It's a paradigm shift from energy as an expensive and scarce commodity to one that is extremely cheap and almost limitless. The more these western governments stay beholden to fossil fuel industries, the more brutal this transition will be I think.
