I have one. A CE-04 that is. A white, futuristic ex-demo, 2022 version from a franchised BMW dealer - 380 miles for under £8k. Oh, and Jack - IT IS DEFINITELY NOT A MOPED! (Maxi or otherwise) It's a 400cc equivalent motorcycle and scooter - but judged by my experience now, and with well over 1000 miles of my time in the saddle (in just 3 months) is that it rides far more like a big motorcycle. I have a few of those too. I have been riding bikes since I was 8 years old (trials) and then raced bikes (and classic cars) both on circuit, road racing and have continued with trials. Serious competition ended in my late 40's after a big "off" following an engine seizure during practice for the Manx GP, but I still love my bikes. I'm now 60, but can't see me ever not riding something... In short, the CE-04 is an immensely practical bike, a hoot to ride. and is the bike I usually "go to" - only because it is such fun and just so easy in everything it does. Mine has the dynamic pack and the quick charge - so a 70 mile run out and then a return is easily doable with a short coffee/pint/charge break at the end point - or two quick 10-20 minute charge stops during the journey. I carry the type 2 charge cable and the 3-pin UK plug charger with me in the helmet storage locker - and with a lot of fiddling can get my lid, gloves and both cables in there together - but when stopped, I am usually using one of the cables, so it's not an issue. Charging it somewhere really isn't any hassle, and actually when riding and exploring - it has led to some interesting stops and meeting some really nice people. Mine came with the full "Tron" sticker pack and orange highlights - so it nearly always draws a crowd of curious folks to it. It's not a bike for the shy or introverts! I have even had the odd pint bought for me and once an extension lead and a fantastic pub lunch provided free by an interested publican in the Yorkshire dales.. Speed wise - even in ECO or ROAD mode - it's quick, very quick - up to 60 mph. With no gears, it is electronically limited by the motor RPM to 80 mph, although on a non-windy day on a flat smooth road I have seen 85mph for a bit. That speed (over 70 mph) if sustained, hammers range though - maybe knocking 20 miles off (down to 60 miles) if you blasted everywhere at that speed. It is not a big distance or motorway bike - unless you have time to spare. It's sweet spot is twisty A roads, and anything that's a B road or C class road. On the latter, it's probably as fast and as fun as anything else on two wheels. It does need an A1 licence (although I have had my full licence since 1980 - wow, typing that just made me feel so very OLD) - and the acceleration (especially in DYNAMIC mode) is a good reason why it needs a bit of experience... It's blisteringly fast. Yes, it's possibly faster than many bigger superbikes up to 60mph, and in any case, they have to be trying to keep up. I can't convey adequately in words just quite how rapid this bike is..... Instant 100% torque and no gears does help that, and all in relative silence. Fabulous brakes with great feel, full traction control and on-lean ABS keeps everything just about in check and although ground clearance is good - it always feels like you could push it harder, and that it just wants to go. Fast. I reckon my licence points tally may rise unless I am not very careful. It is all too easy to be going very quickly indeed. So is an identical new one worth £13,995? - well on paper, NO. BUT.... having now lived with one a bit, my heart now says different. Also, it is INCREDIBLY well made, with everything just working well, and ergonomically, it is really good. If you are over 6'1" get the "Comfort seat II" - as the shorter (before the lump) comfort seat is more restrictive for the taller rider. The Bluetooth integration, phone charging (with fan!) works well and allows good on-screen navigation and spoken instructions should you want or need that. You can even answer/make phone calls on the move if you need to. Tyre pressure monitoring and a host of other useful features (even down to automatic SOS calling) make this a real "Christmas Tree" of modern/futuristic features on a bike - controlled clearly using a 10.5" TFT screen and the BMW rotary control ring - all a bit alien for someone well used to the basics of a Laverda 750 SFC and an old Ducati 900 MHR.🤣 BMW spared absolutely NO expense in this concept development of an electric two-wheeled rocket ship - just like a Star Wars hover bike or a Tron bike. It shows. I reckon the margins on these bikes must have been almost marginal if not negative over the production run so far. I also think it may turn out to be a really important bike in the evolution of electric transport - and I am sure BMW learned a lot doing it. It's design is a bit "Marmite" and it's not for everyone - but it is different. I guess a good parallel in the car world is the BMW i3 - a fantastic aluminium "skateboard" base with a Carbon Fibre body and plastic panels, and again as quick as heck but without the weight of all the modern EV's now have... (and yes, I also have an i3S). If you have never ridden a CE-04 - do find somewhere to go and try it and be prepared to be blown away. If nothing else it's an experience, to be enjoyed, but be warned - that silent and very rapid acceleration is extremely addictive.... STATEMENT: I have no affiliation with any BMW organisation whatsoever - but am just an old (but quick) bike rider who isn't afraid to break the mold.

Good to know it behaves more like the bike it looks to be than the moped described. That then makes the price a bit more reasonable anyway and at least within its range limit would make it a more practical commuter option actually being comfortable to use around the traffic on the faster moving roads. With home solar or cheap domestic rates something like this could well get back the premium paid on its price tag for the regular daily commuter in its lifespan, while it sounds being rather great fun to ride. Though with that huge mass is it a bit more of a handful in the rain? Or does the low COM and electronic wizardry make that no more of a problem?) Plus the helmet locker built is is nice, as what to do with your helmet while you are not riding has been annoying right back to everything being pedal powered.

@@lagmonster7789 🤣🤣🤣🤣 It's as if these outfits believe we'll be so anxious to go green we won't bother about the cost. For £18k a person could fly "anywhere" and rent a bike and kit and enjoy biking holidays for quite a few years. Everyone knows the asking price for these contraptions is way, way too much. I suppose people could wait for the bikes to appear on the secondhand market ... and then offer a few hundred quid, take it or leave it. Some might say much like secondhand battery EVs with a dubious provenance relating to batteries. As in how long the car lasts before it burns to the ground. As it certainly could. I have to say I have high hopes for Robert's hydrogen epiphany. Such a shame he didn't invite Yasmin to be a guest ages ago. Still, what's done is done and now we can look forward to his platforms gallivanting about on the sunlit uplands of modern lithium free technology. A slow withdrawal from battery EVs and we'll soon be gazing at Jack and Imogen extolling the virtues of hydrogen transport and everything else. Watching Imogen on the topic of British designed steel reduction techniques using hydrogen will be a joy to behold. Happy days are here again!

BMW (and a lot of other manufacturers) are really bad at this. Everything is an optional extra, it's so annoying.. "oh.. you wanted wheels with your motorbike?.. that's an additional £2k" I wouldn't mind it as much if the bike was really cheap to start with, and then you can add the extras you need. But at £14k for a scooter, it should be fully specc'ed.

I loved my Harley for the way it would frighten old ladies and small dogs, but traded it in for this. When I park in town more, people come to chat than they did with the Harley (unlike all the Beemers I had before - no one noticed them). I find the reverse very useful as I can move down the whole length of my drive without having to 'paddle' it out. My wife hurt her back and we tried loads of scooters but this was the only one she could get on easily. Yes very expensive, but I got my fully-loaded one, used, at a great price with the Harley trade-in. I put a backrest on and it is more comfortable 2 up - otherwise my arms are almost pulled out of their sockets with the amazing low speed acceleration. Free fuel from my panels - I think I can claim its fusion powered.

What on earth was that guff at the beginning about "the only legacy brand doing electric"? I mean, even those absolute gasoline heads in the USA with the most iconic brand in motorcycles anywhere has been aboard for a while - Harley Davidson's Livewire, for example. Sure, a lot of them are more like electric scooters or mopeds right now, including the BMW you're trialing here, and that includes Honda (of course) and even the other major US brand, Indian. However, both Kawasaki and Triumph have some seriously big and powerful looking eBikes to cast an eye over. Or how about the Ducati MotoE, a 170MPH beast of a bike? Come on, Jack. You can (and should) do much, much better than that. We trust Fully Charged to help us keep up with all the latest, so getting facts like that so utterly wrong isn't just a bit misleading, but reputation damaging. Triumph have got one 'coming soon', Ducati took over from Energica as the sole provider of MotoE bikes, but there's no road version yet. Kawasaki has the Ninja E-1 and the Z-E1 but looking at the tech specs it looks like they're really just scooter motors wearing a Ninja's faring :D but thanks for mentioning Kawasaki I hadn't realised they'd put out a couple of bikes.

@@SpottedCreeper it is interesting that you brought that up. After all, what is being reviewed here is not, itself, what any biker would truly call a bike, let alone a big bike, but rather is a big scooter. It takes more than engine power alone to turn a scooter into a 'proper' motorcycle - the wheel size and body here definitely make this thing more of a touring scooter. It is just as fair to compare it to other scooters that are smaller, as to 'big bikes' which it isn't really one of. I agree with you that, right now, the only real choice for a proper bike from a legacy brand is the Harley - though I really really hope Triumph will change that. However, is legacy such a big deal when it comes to a non-legacy power system? There's some really awesome 'proper' electric bikes out there from brands which may well become the 'legacy' of future generations.

Ironically, and sadly, BMW developed an electric C1 prototype back in 2009. Then, inexplicably they dropped the 'safer two-wheeler' idea altogether and started again from scratch with the C-evolution, which was launched more than a decade ago. This CE04 is a successor to the Cevo and it has a smaller battery and therefore less range, yet costs about the same! Also, both the Cevo and the CE04 were/are available in A1 licence version, so could be ridden on L-plates with just a one day CBT. Another key point that Jack failed to mention!

I have one too, for almost 10 months now, done 10.000 km's. My experience is 85km range max. Of which 20km motorway. I do a 100 km commute so I HAVE to charge at home and at work. The motorway is definitlely a battery killer. I changed my GS for one of these, and I have to admit, that's a big step down in most aspects, but also in the cash departement. I keep around 250€ in the pocket a month, so that's a big plus. Which to me justifies the salesprice. But there are obvious downsides. The biggest difference is that this is a scooter, and it does NOT ride like motorcycle, mainly because you got nothing between the legs to toss it around. But I enjoy riding it, it's the largest scooter out there (I'm 1m89) and it's comfortable. (did exchange the screen for a larger one). It's the smart choice for commuting, it is not a replacement for leisure motorcycle rides if you ask me. It is ahead of it's time, but not quite there yet. Oh...and my Schuberth M1 (open face) size 60 does not fit in the storage compartement, so a top box is a must have add-on for me.

Just to be clear for the young people. "Mo-ped" is a contraction of the words motor & pedals. A "mo-ped" is a vehicle that has a motor and pedals for propulsion. Also, the difference between a scooter and a motorcycle is the position of your legs while riding. On a scooter, your legs are in front of you like sitting in a chair. On a motorcycle, you must straddle the bike when riding. It's like straddling a horse when riding.

Scooters used to be small wheeled vehicles with a legshield but since then they are all just 2 wheeled vehicles as there is no legal definition of a scooter v a small motorcycle even if it has small wheels. @@timscott3027 a 50cc scooter is just that. A scooter. What makes that bike a moped? It’s not one. It’s just a slow scooter. Would you call a 50cc moped a scooter?
@sergentcolon1

@@craigcampbell1843 most mopeds do not have pedals in the U.K. and haven’t for decades. The classification of moped is down to a sub 50cc or equivalent engine capacity and a max speed of 45kmh, it does not require pedals able to propel it as it did prior to 1977. I had an R reg Yamaha FS1e which had pedals that could be unlocked and notionally used to propel it ( in reality they were there to achieve the moped classification) it could do 50mph and was the last reg year that those rules applied to. It can also be a scooter or a motorcycle style, so a scooter and a moped can be the same thing. I am not aware of any step through pedal assisted old style mopeds on the U.K. market though there may be in other countries.

The word "moped", is literally a portmanteau of the words "motor" and "pedaler". As far as I'm concerned - If it doesn't have pedals, then you're just being a bit silly when calling it a moped. I know the naming trend is not new, but face it... It's a motorbike. Put it next to something called a motorbike, and spot the important differences 🤷‍♂

I rode one for 50kms. It was a lot of FUN. If it was 1/2 the price and twice the range I would buy one. They should sell with an integrated top box big enough for 2 helmets and use the space under the seat for a 2nd battery. Riding one, you are always suffering from range enxiety. With a quoted range of 130km, you couldn't ride it to the last cm, so realistically your usable range would be around 110km max. And that's on LEVEL ground, no hills! The regenerative braking is handy but at 20% efficiency, don't expect huge benefits. So if you can't charge up at the other end, you have a range of max 110km ROUND TRIP! Really? After riding this I went a and bought a BMW C400GT Ion. Half the price, with a range of 350km and ability to refuel at any petrol station. Still has heated grips and heated seat, too! And it is a lot of fun to ride. I love it. (ps: My other bike is a BMW R1200RT and I still love riding the scooter too. Just sayin'). The C400GT Ion has ABS, traction control, TFT screen with navigation, lockable glove boxes (2), USB and 12Vdc in one of them. Only 2 things I would love to have: reverse crawling gear and a parking brake.

Hello, love this review, did not know Jack could ride, extra bonus points for jack! As a 6 years now, Rider of Electric motorcycles, as my main, daily, commute to work Could we see the Energica Electric motorcycle range on the fully charged show ASAP please, Energica are simply amazing, they are entirely constructed in Italy, form the ground up, and will, spark much interest. If only you could get Imogen, or Robert on a motorcycle as well!!!!!!!

At least in Ireland problem was with the price. The manufacturer set price that was on a high side, but reasonable, dealers added price increase as it was too cheap next to their specked out cars.

Lots of enthusiasm, lots of good facts - apart from those that are wrong, and those that are missing! The word 'moped' is NOT a synonym for 'scooter'! You said 'moped' about 5 times before you used the correct term here: maxiscooter. A moped, BY DEFINITION (in the UK & EU) is limited to 28mph. You've already owned up to the '321kg' bollocks (for 231) which you should have known had to be nonsense. You talk about the CE O4 as if it's BMW's first electric scooter, when in fact it's the third. The first was the electric C1 safer scooter prototype in 2009, sadly not pursued; the second was the Cevolution launched in London at the 2012 Olympics; then there was a Mk2 version of that, the Cevo+ with a battery 50% bigger than the previous version - and 50% bigger than the CE04's too. That could *really* do 80 miles of mixed, lively riding, which the CE04 won't. Also, there's bugger-all protection from that fairing compared to most maxiscooters and yes, you can fit a helmet in that storage space so long as you don't mind carrying around all the stuff you'd already put in that space to start with! Also, there is a thicker seat available. And ABS is not an option, it's compulsory on all machines above the A1 category, which reminds me of another key missing fact: the first Cevo was learner-legal as standard; the CE04 can be restricted to A1, 11kW CBT power and therefore ridden on L-plates. Also, it's worth mentioning that there's a massive loophole in the electric 11kW learner-legal category: it applies to CONTINUOUS power, not PEAK. When I put an 11kW Cevo on a dyno, it made a real-world 52bhp at the rear wheel, which was 10bhp more than my Burgman 650 on the same dyno! Also a wheelbase of 66 inches is not really that long - I've ridden a host of machines with longer wheelbases, from the 77 inch Quasar to the 112inch Ecomobile. I could go on...

This thing is out for a while now, and I want one since I got overtaken by one on my NIu MQi a while back. Depending on lottery I might order one tonight. Alternatively I would like a Zero motorbike, but that is even more expensive. E Scooter are the perfect commuter vehicle for London. No charges for ulez, congestion or parking, no strikes, no delays, and I always get a seat.

Well might be expensive but this IS the perfect commuter vehicle especially into the big cities where there is a ton of traffic. Instead of sitting in a more expensive car doing 20 miles max for 1-2hours in rush hour i would rather invest my cash in this one. i HATE driving a car in the rush hour even though i drive an EV i still do not get anywhere.

Saw one of these in Metz a few weeks ago, really impressive looking scooter in the flesh - though the back wheel would look better (to me) with spokes. If it is that price I suspect the owner must have been the local BMW dealer..
