Indeed. This is the stuff that got me into Top Gear, in the Tiff days (I was quite young). Don't have to be daft to allow humour in car news & reviews. Good point, that hadn't really occurred to me (probably won't be able to 'not see it' for while now - I'm less thankful should that occur. :)

The best of both worlds. Actual handling finesse, driver enjoyment outside of a straight line, German build quality, a satisfying noise - but quiet relaxing when it needs to be, all backed up with an extensive network of fuelling stations. Wonderful.

Jeremy Schmidt lets say I had the money to spend. 15 mins ago I would have said Tesla without a doubt. But this is a very impressive looking car. More so than the model S. It has made me think....
@Jer_Schmidt6 жыл бұрын
R I don't like the idea of a plug-in hybrid in general; too much complexity. You basically have all of the downsides of both drive trains. That's the only thing that really turns me away from the Panamera. There is lot to love about it, definitely more luxurious and in certain ways even more advanced than Tesla.
@user-jt1jv8vl9r6 жыл бұрын
Jeremy Schmidt I agree. Generally I'm not a fan of hybrids as they are half measures and I'd rather a full electric. Still, at least this car can be driven at low speeds in a town or city without polluting the streets. Better than nothing. At least until driving a petrol car is as socially unacceptable as smoking say.

R Hopefully the Porsche Mission E (I guess it's the "Taycan" now...) will be as nice as Panamera. And surely Tesla will improve their interior. At any rate I'm sure we'll have plenty of really great EVs coming in a few years. Until then this is a good transition vehicle.

Good review. To those scorning it, remember we need to work to get all drivers on board to effectively change the world. Cars like this allow people to take baby steps into the EV world. Today I drive a plug-in hybrid because I often have to take long trips on Texas highways which still lack charging stations. My Leaf could never make those trips. This new Porsche is a helpful step on the road to full electrification, if a bit of a silly waste of cash.

I have the unofficial P75D or 75DU as it's been called, it's the older 75D with the extra 95hp 'uncorked'... this free upgrade was introduced to most of the older 75D cars where possible when the 0-60 dropped from 5.2 to 4.2 on new 75Ds Officially it's just a 75D

I'm loving the review. You are not simply reading straight from Porsche's Marketing-leaflet but rather it feels like you have seriously thought about how you feel about the car and then present in an engaging yet calm manner. It is a very welcome counter-weight to the usual Michael-Bay-esque reviews of other formats. You again manage to keep me hooked with information. And the production value (shots, audio quality of your voice et cetera) is impeccable. Very well done.

I think plug-in hybrids are the perfect combination right now (the future is fully electric of course). I could commute fully electric and have long distance trips in hybrid mode. I won't wake up my neighbours in the morning when I go to work early and I don't pollute where people live.
@zolikoff6 жыл бұрын
Plug in hybrids with decent daily drive ranges are the future. BEVs will remain a niche, for applications where you essentially never have to drive it long distance, or in the smaller luxury market. Mass market will be dominated by mild hybrids and PHEVs.

I actually bought this exact car. I previously had a Tesla Model S that was written off by a Kia jumping a red light. I did 120,000 in the Tesla. Different beasts but Porsche is so much better quality fit and finish. Tech is better in the Porsche with Innovate and in the 20k I have driven it in 5 months it has been more reliable than my Tesla. I do miss the instant torque of the S. I did a round trip from South Wales to Horsham in West Sussex. It was more tiring in the Porsche but only because it would take a couple of hours charging the Tesla so I would be more rested lol

Great review. Your brain is wired the same as mine. Love driving too and from work EV then finding a B road with no cameras or traffic and listening to the engine. So pleased to own this and other last of dinosaurs. The build quality is perfect. I'm not a dreamer I had a real choice between tesla and Porsche. Easy to slag off either from your armchair without ever having a hope in hell of owning either. The tesla was great fun for an hour but the Panamera puts a smile on your face every day and even my electric loving friends just love the looks build quality and yes the sound of that engine.

One of the reasons I prefer a Porsche rather than a Tesla is the quality of that interior. Not saying that the Tesla's interior is bad, but the fit and finish of all of the components inside Porsche's cars is something else. Looking forward to the review of the Panamera Turbo S E-hybrid.

A great review which covers the essentials. It's interesting the way this car polarises opinions. Its Eco credentials are certainly weaker than a pure EV (or a bicycle) but it's not all doom and gloom. I'm lucky enough to own the even less eco-friendly Turbo S Sport Turismo (dog friendly) variant with a combined 680 hp but I can report that in daily local use it barely sips petrol, sometimes using none at all. As I recharge from my solar PV rig that makes it pretty green purely in fuel consumption terms. Not so green perhaps when you factor in the CO2 footprint incurred in manufacture but that's a criticism one could possibly level at most cars. But the Panamera is extremely well engineered so the longevity offsets to a degree. The fuel consumption is rather different for very long journeys where the battery contributes only a small percentage to the range and so is reduced to just increasing efficiency. I'll duck now to avoid the flying brickbats when I 'fess up to 30 mpg with sensible driving!!! Timing is everything and in another 15 years when I'm ready to trade the car in there's absolutely no doubt in my mind that I'll be getting a pure EV but this time around please accept that for some of the uses to which I put my car the infrastructure isn't quite there yet. I wish it was but it isn't. Regarding the wider points raised in the review, Johnny is absolutely right: the Panamera e-Hybrid is incredibly refined and an absolute delight to drive although I'd strongly suggest avoiding playing with the touch screen while driving, at least until one is very familiar with the menus, as it can be extremely distracting. The first service is at 2 years/20,000 miles, whichever comes first, so there's even time for the bank balance to recover a little... :)

The e-golf doesn’t have a chargeport in the front, the Golf GTE (as well as the Passat GTE) does though. I’m guessing that it’s cheaper for manufacturers to put the chargeport where the petrol filler cap otherwise is on pure battery electric vehicles.

At 2:58 you can see the fuel consumption... 26.4 mpg is abominable, especially for a Hybrid. This car does not belong on Fully Charged, it burns more fuel than most non-hybrid ICE cars. It belongs on a junkyard.

If your daily commute is within the electric range, and you occasionally want to have fun, this car might make a lot of sense. However most people buying this will probably never charge it up and just enjoy their reduced taxes...
@matthiasvolk60066 жыл бұрын
You must be quite opinionated if you can judge a car by one little glimpse at the fuel consumption. You don’t know how he has hammer the car down the road beforehand. So the momentary fuel consumption, that you have spotted, doesn’t tell anything. The Panamera serves many more purposes than just saving fuel, which seems to be the only thing your narrow minded head can think of. If you really want to save fuel then take the subway or walk.

Jonny, old son, this is, as far as I can remember, the best review of a car I have ever experienced. The only way it could be improved is you remembering Porsche and Mercedes-Benz are German words, and, therefore, the 'e' is pronounced in the former, and 'z' is pronounced 'ts' in the latter. And, before you ask, yes, I am a pedantic old scrote, and, yes, I do annoy a lot of people.🤨🤨🤨

Brands are pronounced differently in different countries. Example: Correct pronounciation of Geox - JOX, not like the Germans pronounce it. This is also the case with cities (Köln - Cologne, Gamburg instead of Hamburg in Russia), and more.
