The transmission on the Panamera (and Cayenne) S e-Hybrid is an automatic with shifting paddles (Tiptronic S). The double-clutch transmission (PDK) is not available on the plug-in hybrid.

+Rolf Heckemann yes outsourced from Audi I believe. I had an A8L and the Panamera S e-Hybrid shifts just like the A8L did - smooth! I'm actually in the process of switching from a 2016 Cayenne S to a 2016 Panamera S e-Hybrid. Drove one as a loaner and fell in love with it!

Thanks for the honesty at the end! So really its all about energy useage and big fat cars use more of it no matter what the fuel supply. A diesel panamera probably better for long autobahn trips than this machine. The other point missed is this has two exhaust pipes - one on the car and t'other at power station. Now as long as there is little wind, EVs will work in the city. But as soon as London gets an easterly wind we get all the pollution we normally export to Paris and Amsterdam from our power stations and factories. So smog is still possible with EV vehicles.

Robert, you talked about probably not being able to get the claimed 90 miles per gallon out of it, but I didn't pick up on whether there was a more efficient mode you could have used. I'm assuming you switched it to something other than Sport mode? Also, I wonder if the 90 miles per gallon claim is if you use a full charge (at 150 mpge) and a full tank of petrol (at 50 mpg).

I think this idea is great but the battery needs to hold more. 50+ miles would make this much more viable as a mostly electric powered car. Then the engine only ever need fire up when you're getting your foot down or on long journeys. I still think range extenders are better until battery tech improves.

Are the regenerative brakes always active such that the car regenerates all the time regardless of mode? So this is a parallel hybrid with both motors combined in front of the DCT transmission? (you seem to mention shifting when in EV only mode) When in sport mode does it combine the two motors continuously or does it switch over entirely to petrol? Will it fall back to EV only when you let off the accelerator? I assume the paddle shifters allow for manual intervention and then fall back to computer control after a short period? Not sure how much equipment you've changed, but the camera work is great. Production value seems very high. The drawing seems to give you a little more of a paunch then it appears you deserve however :-) Very entertaining as always.

IMO hybrids will replace diesel cars. Heavily turbocharged very small petrol (and therefore efficient) engines with an electric motor to add torque and negate any turbo lag. A de-tuned Mclaren P1 if you will...

The EPA tests give better results for plugins. They rate this Porsche hybrid at 16 miles pure electric range (versus ~40 for Volt). In gasoline mode the car gets 29 MPG on the highway..... that's worse than many V6 cars .

woa, i wouldn't expect a *plugin* hybrid from Porsche this early in the game. Good on them for being so forward thinking, plugins are definitely the way to go, AFAIK a feature lacking in most hybrids comming outof the factories (stupid stupid). It seems like it's all things to all people. The fuel economy you get is purely based on how you drive, there's no limitations being put on you. If you drive like a tosser, you've got a normal fuel guzzling sportscar with the added benefit of skipping London's inner city emissions tax (coz it's an electric vehicle yes?). But if you can keep yourself driving sensibly, then you've got a super efficient car with the added benefit of extra power if you ever need to get outof trouble or have fun. You can basically own a sportscar, without it having to be your "only for recreational drives" 2nd car that takes up room in your garage. You really are getting more outof your sportscar, you can drive it everyday! ps: have you hired a cameraman Rob? There was a few seconds of handheld footage of you taken from the POV of the backseat. Or maybe you're just holding a camera on the end of a stick? hehe. If it were me, i'd probably give one of my kids the camera, icecream wages very affordable.

I've always wondered how those "zero-emissions zones" work. Do they have a little security booth you have to check in with before entering the city center, like one would have on a gated community? Otherwise it could be difficult to determine, with only a glance, which vehicles are "on the list" and which are not. Especially with vehicles like the Panamera having a hybrid and non-hybrid version. What happens if your "cleared" vehicle kicks over to petrol mode inside the zone? Do they come and fine you?

In London for the past 6-7 years there has been a 'congestion zone' in the centre of the city. All vehicles enering the zone are recorded on cameras mounted above the street. They record the registration number and compare it to a data base. Every vehicle that has a zero emission capability is known by the system. I can drive my Nissan Leaf into the congestion zone without paying the quite high (£10 per day?) fee by registering for £10 a year. This system could easily be adapted to work as a zero emission zone.

SlosII £10 per year vs say £2000 per year if you commute in most work days. That said, this class of car is really geared towards the employer-provided market as well as congestion/zero-emission zones across the UK and Europe. 50MPG for a longish journey in such a vehicle is fairly impressive, but the amount of power in the electric motor and charge in the battery is pretty disappointing. Far better IMO to have a 150kW 1.5l 3cyl range extender (or, better, free-piston linear motors), 40kWh of battery (say 30kWh usable), 100kW motors with 400-500Nm torque at each corner, and a discharge rate of 4-5C steady and 10C for bursts.

Willcant, no offense but that idea is bad. You're talking about a small magnet that recharges what? Less than 100 watts back into the battery. A typical electric car of this performance class easily consumes (outputs) thousands times more energy than a few small magnets can recoup. A larger magnet, to regen effectively, would have to introduce significant drag on the wheels, which is a waste of time as it effectively functions as a brake which regen brakes ALREADY do.

Did he get into that much detail? He did mention that the engine connects directly to the drive train and that the battery can charge from the car's motion, so perhaps it's not what you think. Perhaps it's as simple as the engine driving the car and, if you want to recharge the battery, the regen brakes being slightly applied also.

Nah i still dont see this as impressive. The rumored Koenigsegg without a gearbox, having an electric motor to get it rolling and then kicking in the massive engine is a great way for supercars, hybrids for things like trucks or other bigger/longer range vechicles. And pure electric for everything else, just like tesla has shown. Model X can pull huge trailers at a 300km range. The Model s, super quick car, gets 500km on electric.

We will inevitably run out of gasoline. And due to conservation of energy, it isn't financially feasible for us to synthesize it. It would require FAR more energy to create synthetic gasoline than you get in return. It's a similar story with hydrogen, which is ludicrously expensive to store and also requires more energy for its extraction and conversion into a usable form than you get in return. In the long run, that only leaves electricity. Hybrids are a temporary stopgap. At least for commuter cars. Yes, there are quite a few affordable electric vehicles coming to market in the near future with over 200 miles in range. That is a hell of a lot more than the majority of people are going to drive on any given day. The bolt is coming this year, the model 3 within the next two years, and Volkswagen, Ford and others are readying their competitors. Even cheaper EV's will come after that as production costs continue to fall. That's not even getting into the governmental side of things.

Actually, I doubt this very much, you see, as the more easily available locations that have fossile energy resources diminish, the price will start to go higher and higher. This process might take a bit due to manipulation of supply by the various involved parties, but the moment will come that it's more cost-efficient to develop and use other resources than fuel. After this point, oil will just stop be getting used (with the exception of special occasions or emergencies). It's a bit like the migration from steam engines to combustion engines. So it's not so much that we will run out of the stuff, at one point it just won't be worth it. Whether the future is electric cars like the Tesla Model S is something time will tell.

BUT in all other aspects (other than price, lol) it can hold no candle to the likes of BMW, Porsche, Mercedes etc. It looks cheap and it feels cheap. Stop comparing it to European Premium Cars, because it just doesn't. Tesla has a technological advantage right now, which gives it a high profile. But as soon as the premium car-makers catch up (which they will) Tesla will either a) have to cut down the price to reasonable levels (seeing that it has about the quality of a Chrysler or Chevrolet, NOT a Mercedes) or b) go down like the Titanic. Well technically they could also boost their Quality Levels, but yeah, like that's going to happen.

David Waterman Yes it is one thing. They had the balls to cramp a whole shitload of super-expensive batteries inside their car. And surprisingly people pay a shitload of money for that. I totally give them that. Thumbs up. They are ahead of the curve they created, but they are loosing ground fast and if they can't deliver anything other than that first wow factor, they aren't going to be here in 10 years, when everybody has full electric vehicles. Because quite frankly, everything else about that car does not justify that price tag. Also to all the pseudo green people: Feeding electrical power to your car doesn't make you green if that power doesn't com from renewable energy sources, which in 99% of cases it doesn't. Sorry but that is just the way it is. Congratulations to Tesla for making that bold move and they did cash out handsomely on it, But to actually turn around the way we waste the ressources of this planet will take much, MUCH more than just cram a shitload of Batteries into a mediocre vehicle that only the top 1% of people can afford to buy and almost everybody feeds with dirty energy.

Yes it is one thing because the other two follow the fact that you put a crap-ton of Batteries in there. Nothing about the Tesla can't be replicated. The only miracle is that people actually spend 100.000$ on mediocre engineering.
