You do have to spend some time setting the saw up... blade, fence, etc. But once done, the saw is great. Fairly compact which is Nice kzbin.infoUgkxXh-4_3-ZT1fFWP91ZV7iVqzElr0lEb-a I did get an Incra Miter Gauge which takes some setup as well. The stock miter gauge can be adjusted in the miter slot with a little painter's tape... this tightens up the side to side play a lot.

Thanks for your feedback. A riving knife raises and lowers with the blade, so the gap between the riving knife and blade remains constant, making it a safer option. Thanks

I remeber my freshman year in high school in wood shop. Some kid was using something like this and the kick back popped the board out and over his shoulder. There were yellow lines for kids not to cross when this machine was in operation. Well as you guessed it, some kid walked right behind him in the path of the flying board. Stuck the board right in his head and buried the board in his skull. Needless to say, those are some moments that you will never forget. Can't remember either of the boys names. Just all the blood. Safety is #1 and always paramount to anything that you do. If you fell wrong or stupid or just not right while working. Then you are probably not being very safe about your work. Step back and think about what you are doing first before you commit.

Cotton, Saws have to be manufactured in a way to accept a riving knife. There are some after market kits that will let you add a riving knife. You’d have to research your particular make and model of saw to determine if a riving knife could be added

I am confused. Is the black thing a _splitter_ or a _riving knife_ ? From the start of the video the presenter kept referring to a splitter when point at or touching the black thing and I was waiting to see the riving knife. I have never owned a table saw, (unfortunately I was rubbish in woodwork classes) and the only part I really knew about was a fence. I realise this was made 9 years ago (damned good video quality for that time) but it needs to be dumbed down for dummies like me. Now I need to go and watch another video to find out what a splitter and a riving knife are because this video has left me none the wiser. I appreciate you publishing this video but it missed the mark in my case. I gave it a Thumbs Up because I feel that is sort of the payment I can make for watching the uploaded comment. Thank you. [UPDATE] Ok, the black thing was the riving knife. Now I just need to find a video on what a splitter is. Fairly self explanatory but I need to be sure especially around a spinning blade. Also learned what a curf, kurf (or however it is spelt) is. Due to the different language between the presenter and me, I wasn't able to fully understand the word that was being spoken. I am an native English speaker but I am not English. No, I am not having a go at the presenter. It is just many countries have their own way of saying words. The classic one is Americans pronounce herbs as _urbs_ as in suburbs and do not use the letter *h* in the word. Not a big deal when cooking but can be dangerous when Mr Blade doesn't appreciate the learners naivety due to mishearing something important about safety. Again, Thank You for this video. It has caused me to look at other videos to resolve any safety questions that I have now become aware of. 👍

It would be helpful if you could add info about how to purchase a riving knife. Are there universal ones? How do you put it on? What do I have to know about my saw in order to choose the one that fits my saw? I have a brand new, never used portable 10” Delta saw from 1997. So I’m hoping there are universal knives available.

I just got a DeWalt table saw. When putting it together, reading directions, I installed the guard. But in looking at rest of directions, it says not to install both riving knife AND kerf. Now that's what I have. One was already installed there. NOW I can't get it out. Any ideas for me, a beginner? I want to start using, and I'm reading over all directions. I want to be safe, but I know it isn't right with both there. I flipped the latch on side but it won't release the guard.

So whats the purpose of the guard? To me its a big awkward component that block view of the blade as its making the cut.

Because sometimes your cut doesn't cut the whole height of the wood. Like if you wanted to cut into a board, but not cut it apart.

The blade guard assembly includes a riving knife, so when you are using the blade guard you are using both. The additional riving knife that’s included is for situations where you cannot use a blade guard such as a dado operation.

Where do you set the riving knife when cutting all the way through the board? Do you only set the riving knife above the blade when you're not cutting all the way through the board?

Hello. The position of a riving knife adjusts as you raise and lower the blade. Only take it off if you’re making a non-through cut such as a dado or groove. Thanks Paul-Woodworkers Guild of America

Hi George. On the Bosch 4100, what is the principal/purpose behind lowering the riving knife to the lower (middle) position when making a "non-through" cut? I don't see what difference it would make.
@Wwgoa3 жыл бұрын
Great question! I'll ask our expert and get back to you here.
@Wwgoa3 жыл бұрын
Here is the response from our expert: I don’t have the saw in front of me but I believe the top position is for when it needs to carry the guard. The middle position is for when you want a riving knife but won’t be using the guard, such as making a groove with a single blade. The lowest position disables it completely for when you’re using a dado head.

@Monto225 жыл бұрын
Totally newbie here. While using the splitting knife is it normal to feel some resistance when feeding board? I feel my board too tight against the fence, and I need to push it, and this worries me
@Wwgoa5 жыл бұрын
It's not good to feel much resistance. It typically either means that your fence is not aligned properly, the blade is too low, the blade is dull, or the riving knife/splitter are not aligned properly to the blade. It is a dangerous situation that can lead to kickback, and should be remedied immediately.
@Monto225 жыл бұрын
WoodWorkers Guild Of America thank you so much, your answer lead me to further investigation and I realized that my blade was misaligned and also twisted. I figured out that it was twisted because I was forcing the 90 degree position, so the blade was twisted toward the fence at the back end. I also aligned my saw blade and now the wood run smoothly through it. Thank you so much for enlightening me and saving my fingers ✌🏻🤘🏼

have a circular saw with a splitter. its an old saw. I,m not sure if it is positioned right. the top of the splitter is aligned with the blade but the bottom is a couple of millimeters from the blade. is that supposed to be aligned this way?
@Wwgoa7 жыл бұрын
Hi Axell. You need for the splitter to be positioned in the same plane, perfectly aligned with the saw blade. It sounds like the top alignment is correct. I suggest a 6-8 mm gap between the rear of the blade and the splitter.
@AxellTh7 жыл бұрын
I can see that I asked the question wrongly. my fault. the splitter is about 8 mm from the blade at the top and bottom. the top or tip of the splitter is flush with the blade but the bottom is about 2 mm to the side. hope that gives better meaning.

Why would someone be so (put a name here) that they would cover the part of the video we are trying to watch with letters advertising who they are? Or where to buy hamburgers? Or whatever moronic thing they want to say that they believe is more important than understanding the safety video? I guess as apposed to the song "It IS about the money".The more advertising of a product, the less quality you will find in the product. Because that product has only so much money put into it. Quality or Ads
