I’ll probably watch this a few more times as I work on my box. My friends have given me 3 more days to learn this technique, so I can teach them. Thanks, Sam!

Hi Sam, learning to chase threads is one of my Winter projects and it's because of you I'm going to try it. Your clear, concise, explanations make the whole process seem achievable, unlike a lot of books and videos I've watched. I have John Berkley's DVD's so, between the two of you, I'm well armed. Best Wishes, Brendan.

Thanks I have learned 95% about chasing from John Berkeley. I really think he represents real hand chasing in the British tradition. Let me know how you do or if you need any help. Sam

Mike I really got on my soap box about this. I am passionate about chancing threads by HAND!!! It is a skill and art that must not die, as so many turn to a machine---opps on the soap box again. Thanks Sam

As an amateur but very keen wood turner my next ambition is to try and master thread chasing. To that end, and thanks to your earlier uploads on the subject, I've been steadily acquiring a stock of box wood from ebay. I bought up every piece going for about 18 months and it's now very rare to find box on ebay. Next, I found 2 high quality male and female 18 tpi chasers which I bought and have since mounted them on ash handles. I would have preferred the 16 tpi. I was short of the arm rest so I purchased the Robert Sorby version. So, I'm all ready to go and all I Iack is the nerve to get started so your upload is very timely. Many thanks.

Alan I often hear the comment, "I am just too nervous to try or get started." My response is-what is the worst thing that can happen. The male threads are easier to chase. Start with them and just mess around and practice. Once you get the feel of how it works, try the female. Always start with a good rounded over champher at the beginning of the thread. Then after you can cut a thread, you can try to mate the two. Now go out in your shop and chase some threads. Let me know how you do. Sam

Hello Sam, I had my first attempt at thread chasing today. Prior to starting I watched this video yesterday and again this morning. I'm pleased to say that things went very well for me and am mightily pleased with my results. I had one little difficulty insofar as when I tried to screw both parts together they jammed. I put this down to using 18 tpi which is very fine and noted that the tips of some of the threads had lost their sharp profile. I've since ordered a set of 16 tpi which I will have next week. Anyway, I'm very excited at my progress so again many thanks. Alan.

What an art Sam! There's some really great info in here. I'm having trouble seeing how you arrive at a reasonably accurate major and minor thread dia. I guess most of it is corrected and "snuck up on" by altering shoulders and tapers. Do you start out thinking in terms of major dia. for the male and minor dia. for the female and then alter tapers and shoulders for the finer fit? Would love to attend one of you turning lectures! :)

Sam, I want to learn how to thread chase...where can I buy the arm rest tool?

I have only recently started turning, I made my first lidded canister yesterday. I had no idea you could do this and I cant wait to get the tools to try this. Do you have to use the arm tool rest? Great instrutions in all your videos btw.
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER10 жыл бұрын
UB No all you need to start with is the chasers. I would recommend the 16 TPI chasers. In the video I have a link to my playlist of chasing videos. I have 21 videos on chasing in the list. When I first started I only have the chasers. In some of my earliest videos I show chasing with tools I made and with no armrest tool. I don't think you need the added expense and the difficulty of starting with the armrest. I do think the point tool is a tool that is worth buying or making. Let me know if you have more questions. Sam

Hi Sam, I’ve watched a few of your thread chasing videos now, and I’d like to give this a try. What TPI tools would you recommend for a beginner?
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER4 жыл бұрын
I usually recommend a 16 TPI chaser. It is a good compromise. I find a 20 TPI a little too fine when you are trying to make the connection. Sam

Great job Sam. One question, my lathe is an old Delta pully drive. It will not turn slow enough for this Technik. Do you know of something I can add on to the lathe like a dimmer switch to lower the speed of the motor? Thanks
