In the beginning, I was scared of heights and had a death grip on the yoke, light on the controls for fear of falling out of the sky, and my instructor literally yelled at me and quit teaching me. I then found another instructor that had told me to treat the plane like riding a horse, by showing it who's boss, and showed me that I really have to try hard to get a 172 to fall out of the sky because they are so forgiving. It changed my life and I was able to complete my training and received my PPL. The right instructor (Jason you are on the top of the list) can make all the difference in the world.

Like your story. It really takes a calm, patient, and know-how instructor to lead you through the journey. I had similar experience. I was literally told to be terrible and unqualified by the instructor who yanked the control while I was flying. My confidence was rebuilt until I met my last instructor Yvan. I owe my PPL to him who guided me through in such a smart, relaxed, and fun way.

One thing I'm glad I learned early-on is that the airplane will "seek the airspeed you trimmed for". So, as long as I'm not putting tons of back-pressure on the yoke/stick and I've configured correctly I won't stall in slow flight. Power input is my primary pitch and attitude control. Because of that concept, and the "hands free relaxed flying" I was able to fly +2Kts on my Commercial and Commercial/IFR multi-engine check rides. Trim is the best thing ever. These videos were very, VERY helpful in preparing for those tests.

@5:38 = death grip experience. When I was in Air Force pilot training, I had such an aggressive death grip on the T-37 stick during one final approach, my pinky was inadvertently depressing the nose wheel steering button (located on the stick). Unfortunately, I also needed lots of left rudder to correct for cross winds during that same landing. This meant, as soon as my main gear hit the pavement, the nose wheel swung hard to the left during the highest speed part of the touchdown sequence. Made for quite an adventure during the rest of the landing rollout. 😛

Started with a death grip, got over it quickly. I had a really chill instructor who I was flying pattern practice with - he told me to pull power to idle abeam the numbers to simulate engine failure, power-off 180. Said to "trim it up and fly hands free," I thought he was crazy but he had a dead serious look in his eyes... so I did, and that little Cessna just glided through the gentle bank I had put it in and turned right around lined up perfectly with the runway with no additional input from me. I never had a death grip on the controls again.

I am a student pilot about to solo and found to get rid of my death grip, keeping my pen in-between pointer and pinky fingers with ring and middle finger behind helped cure this tendency while gripping yoke. I found I must trim, or I have indents for a day or so in my fingers.

This video is perfect timing, I'm working on slow flight and stalls this Friday. I do have a bit of an issue grabbing the yolk with a hard grip due to just being nervous but I am getting better. Any advice on turns around a point and keeping the same distance throughout the turn? I struggled yesterday doing that but did great in my rectangular pattern

Know where the wind is coming from, start with the steeped bank with the wind behind you. From videos I have learned bank angle in relation to wind is key, just like with S-turns. Shallowest bank into the wind.

Do you do a slight cross control to keep the airplane from over banking in slow flight? I find in the simulator I do best if I do a slight cross control to keep the wings level while turning, so that the secondary effect of the Ritter doesn’t bank the airplane too much and caused me to lose altitude. In the flight simulator in CAT I IMC conditions they have it with a 15 knot cross wind but I know if I’m not careful I end up doing S-turns across the ILS on Landing.
@MzeroAFlightTraining3 жыл бұрын
Hello, thanks for your comment! In slow flight, it is easy to let the bank get away from you so you may need to turn the yoke in the opposite direction just to prevent that from happening to "catch" the bank angle. If you need more help please reach out to us at support@mzeroa.com. Fly safe!

@MzeroAFlightTraining3 жыл бұрын
Hey Anna! Thanks for your comment and congrats on starting your training! Trimming does help a lot and can alleviate some of a "death grip." It will take time to get used to this. The airplane will fly perfectly safe if you let go while adequately trimmed. Ask your instructor to demonstrate this to you. Maybe this can help you feel more comfortable. As always, if you need more help please reach out to us at support@mzeroa.com. Fly safe!
