I like that Boston's Chinatown has a large population of Taishan locals. We're #1. ..Chinese to come to America and open our restaurants. Both my grandfathers opened Chinese restaurants. One in Canada and one in the Bay area in Berkeley. I've worked in restaurants all my life. Watching new entrepreneurs take the gamble and start a successful business is very humbling. Reminiscent of the old immigrants that came before them 100 years ago. The coverage of these new locations is a pleasure to watch.

andrew still had 7 seconds on the pie. 😂 j/k. Seriously though, i think they all need their waiters to show pictures of these meals, and explain. most people are just use to the standard menu. i never even seen most of the food served up on here, from low cost to expensive. when i was living in houston by westheimer mall, their was this amazing the best shawarma place. the food was amazing. shawarma kings i think was the name, but i had no idea what to order, and it’s was a lost for me, and i still remember how i felt. massive vietnamese area. really amazing food.

Fun fact: coffee-flavored gelatin as a dessert was actually invented in Boston in the 1800’s in a restaurant called Durgin-Park, and was brought over to Japan later. A Japanese student who studied abroad in the US is said to have been the first to publish it in Japan. So Ogawa Cafe opening up a location in Boston and serving drinks with coffee jelly is actually a really cool full-circle moment!

The spot that is Tora was for decades a small family owned Aquarium fish and supplies store. I loved going there to see all the interesting things they sold that you'd rarely see at typical American aquarium store and NEVER at a national chain. I liked the poke at Tora but I missed the old family and their "taste" in fish.

I know I should watch this. I used to know Chinatown, as a 4 time a year visitor, but now it's this unknown. My parents would bring us to this dim sum place, Moon Villa, and we heard from people that it was a crappy place. So we went to Dynasty. It had more variety. Waiters, there, loved to mess with you. And I doubt it's still there. Funny fact. One time, my sister had a sack of cornstarch in her car, parked in Chinatown. Dudes thought it was cocaine, and they expertly removed the back window and probably were a bit disappointed that it wasn't what they thought it was. Anyway. My first memory of Chinatown, was not actual 'Chinatown' itself, but 'the Combat Zone,' which Boston got rid of. I kinda wish it were still there. I mean. Realistically, vice went some place else. You know? If it's in a fixed place, you can observe and monitor the situation. I just had a Chinese rice tamale for lunch, which they show in this clip at 0:10. Pretty sure, people, who haven't tried it, will think it looks really gross. It's not. This is the time of year for it. Frankly, I've never had a good meal in an American Chinatown. Maybe it's different now. I almost miss the Chinese fare that all the Chinese would make fun of in the 70's, the chicken fingers, poo poo platter, duck sauce, eggrolls wrapped in thick wanton skins. Back then the KEY was duck sauce. If you liked duck sauce, you were 'in.'
