Competitive shooters say one thing, tactical shooters say another. Rob Leatham breaks down both sides of the conversation and explains why its possible that both sides are wrong. He makes a lot of valid points in this video. Please watch it thoroughly and several times...then we'll surely see you in the comments section.

This is why I have so much respect for Rob Leatham. He understands that there has to be a balance between both the tactical side and the gaming side. He throughly understands the strengths and weaknesses of both. He's telling you to know which end of the spectrum you're on and train accordingly. Be a well rounded shooter and learn all you can from both sides. If you don't know the fundamentals, you won't do well in either.

While I agree to a degree, the risk assessment performed before we ever find ourselves in a tactical situation allows us to not only better predict and understand the situation in which we find ourselves, but also to possess the training and tools that are necessary in order to handle/survive that situation.

This is why simunitions is important. It's critical to train under a hormonally induced heart rate (stress). Everything is completely different under stress. and not just once or twice. Keep doing different scenarios and your ability to operate under stress will become better and better. The point is not to be afraid to keep pushing yourself and don't stop learning.

Great analysis, thank you. I always liked the wild west's Bat Masterson's three rules of winning a gunfight. 3rd in importance is speed, 2nd in importance is accuracy, but the most important is the gunfighters' deliberation to pull the trigger under stress.

Yes, the INTENT and WILL to kill MUST be there... BUT if you are not ALSO Faster and Stronger then YOU might get killed before you have the CHANCE to carry out your "intent"... As is also often said... the person who comes in second is the first loser... And in a survival situation/gunfight the second fastest may never even get an opportunity...
@FieldShunt
@FieldShunt 7 жыл бұрын
Sorry, but: the point of armed or unarmed self-defense is never to kill. Never. To do so in a non-military situation is a crime. The intent is to stop. The fact that the miscreant might die as a result of your use of lethal force is an unfortunate side effect, not the intention, not if you are law-abiding.
@jussimakarussi

FieldShunt I think what they mean is that if you're not fully committed to potentially killing someone to stop the threat, you might hesitate and never get a second chance. The intent to fire at the most vital parts to EFFECTIVELY stop the threat must be there.

As we were trained in the Marines...fire at the "center of mass" ... Taking the time to "aim for smaller targets" -- on a moving person -- will be a MISS in almost every case, when under the Stress of the situation. [Also you must REALIZE that a person who gets shot, or stabbed, etc. does NOT just instantly STOP and Fall Down! Your muscles and blood stream has oxygen and 'energy' already available! Even if you shoot someone in the Heart, they may be able to continue attacking you for up to about 45 seconds! Unless you hit them in the BRAIN or Spinal Column to "shut down the control center" they may keep attacking you! People who have been shot multiple times, and turn and run away, will often run a block ot 2 down the road, or more, before finally collapsing. Police Officers have shot an attacker 6 or more times, as STILL got stabbed by the assailant!] It sounds horrible to 98% of the population...but in that situation and moment you MUST "De-Humanize" the other person simply as an 'object' [ like a 'robot' or something ] that is about to KILL YOU! And if you have ANY desire to return home to your Family -- or to PROTECT your Family while under attack(!!) -- you MUST be mentally ready to PULL the Trigger!

I wouldn't want to get into a gunfight with anyone. Standing in front of a man shooting at you is a good way to get perforated. Best way to win a fight is to avoid it. But, neither tacticool training nor playing a game can teach the warrior mindset necessary to survive a violent encounter.

My "Philosophy" has always been that EVERYTHING I can add to my knowledge about something is better than not knowing it! (Providing it has been proven to be correct and effective, of course.) As a former College Athletic Trainer, I constantly used skills and drills from other sports or from 'the gym' to actually improve performance "In the Game"... The Great NFL Receiver Lynn Swann used to study BALLET during the off season to improve his 'leaping' abilities and body control in mid air! (-;

This sounds like a debate that crosses into a lot of martial arts and combat sports. There are definite differences between fighting styles that are designed for competition vs fighting styles designed for actual combat. A combat style like ju jitsu will encourage people to fight dirty and go for squishy targets like the eyes and groin while it's sport form of judo has rules, banned moves, and encourages people to take actions where they gain the highest score. Both are good to learn, but both have wildly different goals.

To explain to those unaware, the reason for the negative comments about the company Springfield Armory has to do with a recent bill in the Illinois Legislature that advanced from the Senate to the House with the apparent acquiescence of Springfield Armory (and Rock River Arms). Those two companies had a lobbying outfit that it seems opposed the bill previously and then, after cutting a deal with Senate leadership, they removed their opposition and the bill passed out of the Senate. The problem with the bill itself is that it establishes an extreme licensing scheme on firearm "dealers" and manufacturers; but the amended version excluded SA and RRA from the requirements. There is much more wrong with the bill SB1657 but suffice to say, these companies' lobbyist removing their publicly-recorded opposition is thought to have greased the way for the passage of the bill. Both companies vehemently deny having struck the deal as described. There is a lot of controversy about who did what when and who knew what when, and the picture is not clear to many people still. But Springfield Armory and Rock River Arms are in the process of working to repair their reputations with Illinois gun rights people.

The only real tactical problem with being a 'gamesman' is habituation, when you for whatever reason stop thinking(which happens to the best if things happen fast enough/unexpected enough and makes you stressed enough) then you will fall back on what you are used to doing and what you have habituated yourself to doing. The only but also largest problem with gamesmanship in a real-life situation is exposure/speed as it will habituate you to indiscriminately exposing yourself to get the shot, be it by inadequate use of cover or by running/moving/fast-fast-fast behavior where as anyone who has been shot at will tell you that you get very slow and very cautious real fast when you have something that can kill you coming in your direction...

Thomas Maker great point! When stressed you can go on auto pilot. An example, is training with 2 shoots to body one to the head. The training does not translate perfectly into real world stats on shootings. However, agencies who for years trained like this saw a reduction in the number of rounds officers fired, versus the “ spray and pray” shootings that were typical in the late 80’s early 90’s before range tactics changed.

screw your feelings I'm a competition shooter and have done force on force. The advantage is I have the gun stuff down, my shots hit and I'm generally faster. That frees me up to focus on everything else. It's not like there's magic tactics that only those christened as LE can learn. The tactics are generally easy to learn it's the gun stuff and combatives that take longer to master.

I have been following Leatham since the early 90's -I've always respected him. I agree with all he said here. Tactical guys really have to recognize that someone like Leatham can headshoot 6 targets in less time than it takes to say, "drop the gun." Recognize that the speed that is learned on the gaming side is very important, just part of the winning package. There is a good bit of cross over between the two disciplines and they can compliment each other well. Keep in mind the next time someone suggests a 3-gun guy would be worthless in battle------ how well would Mike Tyson do in a bar fight? Just because Tyson spends (or spent) his time training for a sport doesn't mean he wouldn't do OK in the real world, right?

I am both. 10 year military veteran (Infantry & Special Operations) and trained under Frank Proctor as well. Civilian competition has CLEARLY influenced military shooters just ask the Tier 1 guys who discovered it and brought competition skills to military shooting. Competition skills are absolutely applicable to tactical shooting..if you're military, go compete. If you're a civ maybe try defensive courses, shoot house courses etc, from reputable schools with instructors who shoot both.

First rule of a gun fight, survive. I wouldn’t want to get in a gun fight with you or anyone for that matter. I try avoiding gun fights through tactics. That said I agree can’t avoid a gun fight then your skill set with the weapon your using is an important aspect in a combat shooting. However, I say 80% of surviving a gun fight is tactics utilized pre engagement along with those utilized during the fight, only 20% or so is the technical skill set with the weapon. Take out military engagements, and focus on law enforcement and private citizen gun fights that can be studied on videos we have access to. You will find the officer and citizens who win the gun battles employing superior tactics pre fight and during the gun battle versus the bad guy. Conversely, watch videos of officers being killed, or seriously wounded in gun fights. You will see obvious poor tactics that lead to their demise, I imagine some of those officers were very good shots on the range. Great channel, keep the videos coming!

I agree with Rob. He has some great points. It gets back to the basics of learning to crawl before you walk. learning to be safe with removing your firearm from your holster and putting it back in. Target shooting is fun but it's different than combat shooting. I just recently recently purchase a new firearm it's Single Action double action. I'm going to practice with it roughly a hundred times a day drawing and squeezing the trigger in double action mode to strengthen my trigger and to gain more trigger control. after about 1000 repetitions I'm then going to start adding some live-fire shooting still not trying to be accurate yet. I would rather be safe than sorry. I've seen some bullet wounds on the internet and they are not very pleasant to see.

It's a similar point with martial arts. With some styles, we train and train and train doing specific maneuvers that have more to do with the art than with what is practical in a fight. Sure, it would look cool in a movie, but there's hardly anything in there that you'd see in an actual fight (case in point: people don't continue holding their arm out, after throwing a punch, long enough for me to grab hold of it and perform a counter move against it). This had a lot to do with me moving to Kenpo (it contains far more practical, real world situations). But, even before I did so... we still sparred at the end of every training session (where all of the flashy stuff strangely disappeared). And, even though there's virtually none of those fancy moves in there, you (the 95% of people who've never been in any kind of fight) probably don't want to get into a fight with anyone who has had training.

In a real world environment where you have to equally proficient shooters "Even if the competition shooter was the better shot" the real world operator has a huge stress advantage and has a much better understanding of cover vs concealment etc. The biggest advantage being that someone military is much less likely to get tunnel vision "Panic mode" or "In the black mode in color code readiness" and will very likely be the more aggressive shooter. Most of it would boil down to who uses their cover the best / knowing when to move or not to move position etc.

No one knows how they will react until someone points gun at you with intent to kill. How you respond with your situation awareness and utilize your training will determine whether you survive or not. Let's just say I've been there done that..! Good luck with however you decide to deal with the confrontation..!

That's great that you're a competition shooter...but you said it yourself 'we're not in a real life situation, we're at the range' (not an exact quote). My question is, whether it be military/police, or some kind of gang war like on video games lol, which approach to fire your weapon is most effective when you are in a danger situation (im obvs guessing military style "tactical shooting" due to the fact they are shooting generally side-faced (less of a target to be shot at). Also I respect you guys who can take an assault rifle/pistol/PDW, i.e HK MP7, but although you competition shooters are dealing with the stress of hitting targets & speed...like you said it's just a range at the end of the day; & im sure any shooter in a competition (trying to win a trophy), is not nearly under the same stress ass US Marines overseas in a country where you dont know the land, and when you do come across enemy fire, im sure live AK-47 rounds flying within feet of you is much more stressful than winning a competition..seeing how that is a matter of life & death, & I know if I was were placed in a miliary or even police shoot-out situation; even though from a squared up stance (giving the enemy a large target), I would much rather take the extra few seconds & try to make my body as small of target & stand in shoulder width, side face (as much as possible while maintaining accuracy, since it is not a race, and make myself a smaller target). My question remains, for anyone who may find themselves exchanging fire with a war enemy or an armed home intruder, would you still recommend shooting with your body sqaure to the enemy, making yourself a larger target rather than if you stood in a military/side face stance (lowering the danger of being shot, since you're no longer standing sqaured up to your enemy. After all, most gun owners buy guns either to hunt, self/home protection, or they just plain like target shooting..but im asking if your squared off stance to the enemy is smart, people learn to adapt & I believe in a combat situation that you would want to make yourself as small of a target as possible. I believe the US military still uses M4A1 Carbines & HK 416s & FN SCAR's. Seems like if we're not playing 'shoot the beer can', a tactical/sideface stance may save your life in a combat situation, smaller the target, harder to hit..& im sure the US Military has had much more training than these guys spraying their Ak-47s & RPGs. They never spent years learning how to work as a team, be aware of your surroundings, spend countless hours on the range. They may not be as fast or score as many points as a competition shooter, but id bet they walk away alive at the the end of the day.

Okay, as a shooter with sixteen years of exp with a small group of firearms (Beretta M-9, 96, PX4 compact, and px4 fs). While it really doesn't matter what you use, so long as one is comfortable, and competently proficient with it. To that, (yay me), I can hit a grouping the size of a cigarette pack at 20ft. Point is, this means less than nothing in the practical sense of tactics. To that extent, what would you recommend for the tactical side of training?
@azcop2

Best thing to survive a tactical situation is not speed or accuracy, it’s wearing body armor. Wearing body armor saves lives. Those who are placed in tactical situations often are reacting to the unknown and often have little time to react. Although most cops don’t shoot as well as completion shooters and most competition shooters never have to respond to a armed robbery or make a traffic stop. Law enforcement shooting and competition shooting require completely different skill sets, speed and accuracy have some but very little overlap.

I found out that this system of point and shoot works for me. I only eyeball the front site, and shoot at least 10 rounds as fast as I can, all rounds are within a 6" dia. target

Your end comment reminds my of a comment I read in a forum talking about snipe's rifles and calibers... *commenter on .223/5.55* "I have never considered the .223/5.56 NATO round as a sniper caliber in anyway, however if I was to be shot in the head by one I am sure I would change my mind." People say I am not a great shoot yet I can hit a gopher at almost 50 yards iron sight every time. Any of my targets in speed drills I can land all my shots with a .45 ACP in centre mass. The real question is will the other guy find me to shoot me? And as you have said before learning to not move the gun when depressing the trigger is the most important part.

First rule in a gunfight, "Dont get SHOT". Use any/best cover if avaliable. KNOW your weapon & where its gonna hit by "feel". And PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE til its automatic in a "no time to think it out" situation. EXACT shot placement in a combat situation dosent mean squat. Anywhere in the 12 inch center mass hit zone is enough to stop them from killing YOU. Easy to do an EXACT follow up once hostile is neutralized enough to keep them down. Hence, military "triple tap"".

Experience has taught me that you will fight the same way you train. I would argue that tactical shooters would not do as well in a shooting competition because they are trained to be combat effective when they lay down rounds. Combat effective is not 10 rounds in a 3 inch area from 15 feet. It is 10 rounds in a 10 inch area (mid Torso = Target) which is where almost all the vital organ systems are located in a human being. Conversely, Mr. Latham is right when he says he would change to tactical in a gunfight because good against targets is one thing and good against the living quite another.

While I agree w/everything you say, a big art of winning is having a willing-to-do-anything attitude. I survived three armed-deadly encounters during my 30 years when we qualified only twice a year. My attitude was I was going home to my wife & kids at the end of my shift, and I was willing to do anything to make that happen.

To me, there is so much overlap between the two, and in the areas that are different, I think most people will react accordingly. An example, when I do dry fire practice, I return my pistol (CZ PCR) to half cock after each shot. I've never done that 'habitually' in a match. Just my 2 cents...
