As a former employee, they do have different systems. She wasn’t lying. However, if Loss Prevention is involved and your card was closed out the blue, fraud was probably involved. I know it’s embarrassing and an inconvenience. I do agree their processes should be simplified. That’s one thing employees complained about. Also go to a branch that has a debit card machine maker. You’ll get one on the spot and call before you go to make sure they have one. 💛

Chef M that’s exactly what happened to my son. He tried to order something in the middle of night during Christmas and they suspected fraud and cancelled the card. He went to the main branch and they gave him a new card on the spot.

I'm with you! PNC Bank kinda sucks. I used them as one of my back up banks. Never went in, never over drafted, big deposits, all that. I had to go in one good time 15 mins before closing. I was told I needed to come back the next day by an all black staff of three 'cause they were "closing". 😳 "Oh ok... " Came back three days later and snatched it aaallll out! 100% Agree with you! This happened to me when I was trying to pay for my daughter’s birthday party. I was absolutely mortified and highly embarrassed. I knew there was plenty of money in the account and they declined the transaction because the amount was so expensive and I had never made a purchase there before. They stated it was fraud prevention and that’s why the transaction was being declined. I did exactly what you said, I was a 20 year customer with my banking institution and moved my money elsewhere. Now I know I’m just one person and me moving my money didn’t matter to them; but it made me feel good and and my decision was based on principle!!! Move your money!

That happened to me and I’ve been with pnc since I was a teenager. Apparently someone had used my card in Puerto Rico an hour before I tried to use it on the mainland and I’m so glad it was declined and contacted by them via email. After calling customer service upset like you, they urged me to check my email and I could see that their security department had alerted me of the foreign charges so they shut off that card immediately. I confirmed my identity via phone and I was able to get a new card at the branch on the same day. 🤷🏽‍♀️ but go ‘head... tell em why you mad son! 😝

I am definitely with you on this one. It seems to be happening most often than not with me. Not anything having to do with a credit card per say but just inefficiency in general across multiple corporations. I had a run in recently with my phone and my carrier. My phone was whole live stolen and me, the victim, had to wait a total of 3-4 weeks (A MONTH), to get my phone services reinstated and get my number back. Customer care was limited in their abilities to help and I had to be transferred to 10 different places before I finally got the help I needed. I was super frustrated and stressed out. As a loyal (I’ve been with them since high school and am now in my early 20s) and paying customer, I feel we should be provided with better services.

Everyone should try to bank with 3 types of bank - a big bank (BOA, Wells Fago, Citibank etc) ...a Regional Bank -(PNC, Suntrust, etc) and a credit union. The benefits of all these banks are different and will you the flexibility when it comes to qualifying for home loans, mortgages, auto loans etc. Even if you don’t have a lot of money...try to keep a little bit in there to have access to those benefits.

Hindsight is 20/20, but moving forward try to always have more than one form of payment on you at all times. You may want to look into getting a credit card that is kept for emergencies in your wallet (but enroll it in autopay for Spotify or some small bill, so it’s always in use and always paid in full). If your credit isn’t up to par (no worries, we all been there), get a secured credit card. TRUST ME, it will prevent embarrassing moments like this from happening again.

Sounds like your card information was compromised and PNC should have sent you a new card before closing your current card. Happened to me several times with the credit union. Your new card was probably lost in the mail.

As someone who works for a financial institution I deal with many members about this! And in some cases the systems are different and what back office can see we cant on the front line. With system changes and enough complaints this has changed. But we still run into the issue of sometimes we have to speak to back office to get a card situated and they aren't there on the weekends. lol your frustration is so REAL. as a banker since there were no memos on your account, the reason why the card was blocked was because you probably were swiping the card at a different merchant or too much. PNC security tried to call you to confirm charges and there was no answer. so yes they will block the card, for security reasons. is it inconvenient, yes....

I used to be a banker for PNC, Loss Prevention is never closed. That is something they tell you when you have to step into a branch to get information verses over the phone. They need to verify your identity in person to give out whatever information they have on why the card was closed. While customer care does work on a different system they are co-mingled and they have access to the same if not more information. They are unable to communicate some things over the phone but I never understood why they don’t just say that 🤷🏾‍♀️ I now work another financial institution 🙂 I hope they sort it out for you
