Hi Donna. Thanks for taking time to make these videos. Your insight has helped me and probably hundreds of others. I'm at week 5 after my surgery and have started PT. "ALL OK!!" for 62 year old grandpa. I had 2 tears, some impingement and fraying of another. They cleaned it all up. I'd like to also share a few tips that helped me and may help others. 1) Get a couple of pairs of sweat pants to wear around the house. Makes trips to the bathroom much easier as you don't need to mess with zippers or buttons with one arm in a sling. 2) Get a pair of sandals to wear with Velcro straps. Your feet are protected and you won't need to wrestle with socks or try to tie bootlaces with one arm.... 3) I was cautioned about falling. Do NOT fall down. I was worried about maybe slipping in the shower. We have a walk in shower downstairs with sliding glass doors, and I set a wooden ( or plastic will work as well) kitchen chair in the shower stall. I was able to stand and soap up, sometime sit, but would always sit in the chair to wash my hair. That way, I could not possibly lose my balance and fall. 4) Speaking of showers, your tip of getting a long handle brush to shower with is a good one. I was able to reach areas that I would not otherwise have been able to. I soft bristles helped with rinsing and also if I had any itching, they helped relieve that. 5) First week or so, I had a bandage over the incisions and was told not to get it wet. I used a couple of wraps of Saran Wrap and some blue painters tape to place a waterproof barrier over the bandage and kept it dry that way. 6) Sleeping at night was not a problem for me. I did find that after about 4-5 hrs in the Breg Slingshot 3 sling, my elbow and arm got stiff. I unbuckled the straps and let my arm lay at my side, parallel to my body for a few hours while I slept on my back. This helped, but I always kept the sling on in case I rolled over. Figured arm couldn't get too far away if I still had the sling on. Could not roll toward it and maybe could roll away, but straps beneath my back would keep me from rolling too far. 7) The ice bucket was a HUGE help. They issued me a "Breg Cube" model and I musta went thru 200 lbs of ice over the past 5 weeks. It holds about 5 lbs of ice and about 2 qts of water and lasts about 4-5 hrs. I set the bucket assembly on a barstool next to my recliner. Sometimes the pad would get "airlocked" and I would not get any flow. I learned to fill and assemble the bucket and pad as a unit. Then set the pad on the floor ( a lower elevation) and plug it in. The air would then purge. After about 3 minutes, it would be ice cold. THEN, unplug the power supply and strap it on. Sometimes, I would flip the hose connector as the direction of flow thru the pad seems to impact where the coldest spot is. I always wear a t-shirt underneath and cinch it down tight for maximum surface contact area. If my shoulder got to cold, I would just unplug the unit for awhile and sit. Watching a lot of old Jimmie Stewart movies from my recliner. 8) Do your PT. Looking back, at first I think it was mostly about moving the arm around to relieve stiffness and regaining some range of motion. Passive only, NO active motion. This will also help breakup scar tissue, I was told. The pulley thing really helped me, and I actually broke down and spent the $13 for that gizmo, and it REALLY is my favorite exercise. The "chest out shoulders back" are another good one, for me. Don't be alarmed if you hear a little crackling and crunching going on. That is normal and for me, feels better. I was told that is scar tissue breaking up and is not painful. 9) 5 weeks later, I'm pretty much weaned of the pain pills. I take aspirin only and i'll eat a hydrocodone before I go in for PT 2 days a week as a pre-emptive measure. That way, the Lady can give me all the love and I can tolerate it. Again, Donna, THANK YOU! You're insight has helped me and many others. This is my insight based upon my experience, and not medical advice for anyone. I am a US Army Ranger and not a Doctor or medic. Your experiences and results may vary. Take care. RLTW!

You’re right everyone heals at differently at their own pace. Since I’ve had rotator cuff surgery two weeks ago I’ve been sleeping on my back from day one. It had not been problem. Also I’ve started driving. Prior to my surgery I went to physical therapy and continued going to the gym. This helped me a great deal my supporting muscles were very strong. I still have a long road ahead but I look forward to a full recovery. Keep the videos coming they’re motivating.

Hi Donna! There are many of these videos out here, but I must say I continue to return to yours as I go through this process. I didn't have any extras done on my procedure so, I think it's simply a grin and and go along with the PT program. This started last spring while trying to start a leaf blower and went downhill from there. I agree with the surgeon that those earlier days of playing handball 3 times a week probably contributed to my downfall. So, let me join the Donna fan club and say thank you for taking the time to make these videos. They have helped this 72 year old immensely.

I started PT on my third week, pendulums, and passive movement, and I could started the second week, because I have to find a therapy Center near by my house and that took a week more, I went to surgery on Jun 4th 2020 and doing pulling, frontal and lateral raises with pbc pipe, y dr. Is a sport medicine surgeon and he advise me “ I don’t want to see you crippled “ so let’s do it! I got almost six week from my surgery, I have rotator cuff surgery, two spurs, full tear in my supraspinatus tendon with one cm retracted, damage in my biceps tendon. Today I feel much better, I prepared for the worst, cause a friend of mine in my job told me no to do it, I also had at home an extend machine. I use it the days I don’t go to therapy. That helped me a lot, because is great for passive extension movement! This is a matter of 6 to 9 months for complete recovery! Well good luck to you all and get a speedy recovery!

Hi Donna, I am now entering week 4 and watching this video to see how you did. I am a little further on than you, as I had less done. Small tear, debridement, SLAP repair and a MUMFORD! I too had trouble with the sling not being correct so I would advise people to ask the nurse to go over that before they leave the hospital. I noticed that you still have the cushion. Mine was removed at my Drs. visit which was 9 days after surgery. I started PT at week 2 and that is going well. I am now getting the spasms so glad to have the nob thing that you recommended. Still need a lot of rest which always surprises me! Thanks again for sharing all this and such good advice. Also good to see other people's experiences, amazing how different they all are!

I was told no driving for the 6 weeks that I was in a sling. When I did start driving it was difficult holding my arm up to the steering whee. Also, If I had driven those first 6 weeks and had gotten into any kind of car accident, my insurance would not have paid because I was driving against medical advice.

I was 2 months post op yesterday & going to my 3rd PT appt today. I was sent home after surgery with a nerve block that lasted for 3 days. I still took pain meds even with the nerve block to take care of breakthrough pain. Not only did I have rotator cuff repair but also my bicep muscle was frayed & had to be reattached to the bone lower than where it was so my recovery will take a little longer than normal. Although I had to wear a sling for 6 wks I was allowed to take it off for periods during the day so I could move my hand & elbow. My advice is if you're going to have surgery on your dominate arm start using your non-dominate arm to do every day tasks. This may be TMI but wiping after going to the bathroom was hard using my left hand so I encourage you to get used to using your non-dominate hand for a while. I also bought a couple of shirts that snap at the shoulders that would go over my arm without having to lift it & even made some of my own using velcro. I used them the first 3 wks after surgery. I'm hoping to be cleared to drive today after my PT appt. PT is going well but pretty painful. I encourage anybody going through this to do your exercises as directed.

Donna thank you so much for all the time you put into these videos! I am in week 5 right now (Surgery 12/28/2022. The sling positioning is probably the toughest obstacle for me as well. I was issued the DonJoy UltraSling III at surgery, the traditional over the neck type like yours. That thing caused so much neck and pain/tightness in the top of my shoulder blade to my neck! Pulling the foam cushion more forward helped, so it was just off my neck vertebrae. But still, it was not good. I ordered the DonJoy UltraSling Pro, the version that has a loop that goes through your opposite arm and there is nothing around your neck. That made a huge difference, but like you, I didn't realize how improperly fit/adjusted I had it for a good week or two. After proper fit, it's been great, but like anything, if you wear it long enough, it's just so difficult to keep it comfortable. I'm scheduled to go back for Dr follow-up in 9 days and should be able to not use the sling anymore (hopefully!). But I have been switching between using both slings, and also taking the pillow bolster out some as well. Just trying to vary things up helps, but as you know, nothing is ever comfortable for more than a few hours. 😞 I'm surprised you hadn't been able to drive. I literally was driving that first week. Mine was on my left shoulder, which would for certain be easier, and maybe that's why I was able to. I also had the supraspinatus tear, both top and bottom side repaired, as well as bicep repositioned (mine wasn't torn, he just prefers to get it attached to the arm rather than up under the shoulder for less issues long term I guess. Again, thanks so much for all your videos, I have gotten some nice tips, and good reassurances from watching them! I'm sure I will be commenting to others as I watch them as well.

Hi Donna- You are right about the sling. I'm almost 4 weeks out and it hasn't felt right and is NOT an immobilizer- no waist strap or cushion between my abdomen and arm. I'm really worried my arm has been way too mobile. I've felt like my elbow is too low. I think this has caused scapular pain. Did you experience this before you adjusted your sling? My surgeon didn't say anything about the sling when I saw him at 2 weeks post op but to be fair I didn’t ask him .

Hi - I’ve also had the same problem with being given an ill fitting sling post op. I folder and clipped the top layer of the hospital one using a paper clip and that supported and elevated my elbow better. I also got an over the counter one - was a bit more basic than the hospital one but strangely way more comfortable and supportive, as well as being easier to put on myself

I am at the 3 week mark and have a fairly similar journey except my full supraspinatus tear required 4 anchors. So a bit tender & super sensitive for sure still at this point. No heavy duty meds now - just Ibuprofen like yourself. I felt something pop at the 1 week mark and since then my shoulder hasn't moved correctly so has become frozen again. The surgeon refused to acknowledge there was anything wrong. Im at 7 weeks post surgery and the is a sharp pinching any time i move it. I will add that since starting the ROM exercises I have had to go back to my meds 3 times a day, panadol osteo and 1x mobic a day.

Louis, my anchored shattered while still in the OR, after the doctor was finished he started rotating my arm around and noticed something wasn't right. He then reinserted the scope and found that one of the anchors had shattered and had to make a surgical incision and replace it with a larger one. I would doubt that you busted an anchor unless you fell on it. My advice is to ice it and if you still have bad pain to call your doctor.

Hello! I’m about to be on my 14th day since surgery and I’m struggling to manage still. I have some questions if you’d be so kind as to answer :) How were you able to shower by yourself? Also did you leave your arm hanging down or did you use a sling in the shower? I tried to use a cheap sling from CVS in the shower but it would become too heavy for my arm. Thank you again your video is very helpful!
@funmakingmoneyify

Murielle, I also bought a cheap sling for the shower, but never used it! I was told by my surgeon to just let it hang. If you bend over, you can wash underneath the operated shoulder. It's harder to wash the unaffected arm. Having a brush on a long arm can help with that. Good luck!

Thank you. Your surgery also involved the bicep tendon. I was “lucky” and only the rotator cuff had to be repaired(and some bone shaving). I can drive so it’s not so bad. I’m at three weeks. Only time it gets sore is at night(really sore). Probably because I am moving it/laying on it unconsciously. If anyone else has this issue, it is best to go back to the full arm sling around the waist at night. This prevent some shoulder motion.

Samuel Mayers I’m not a doctor but that might be another lower arm injury. I had elbow problems before my surgery but I suspect I was using my arm differently because of my shoulder issues. Since my surgery, I’ve been getting a sore shoulder by moving my bicep too much but that is because the bicep tendon goes into the shoulder area. Good luck with the rest of your recovery.

Only keep the hospital provided sling as a back up if you need to wash your good sling.

Thank you so, so, so much! I am actually pending surgery September 19th and I am terrified. I injured my shoulder in a car accident last year in May. I was so accustomed to being in pain that I thought nothing of it until I started getting traveling and radiating numbness throughout my shoulder, forearm, and hands. Turns out I had the exact same tears that you have and we'll need the same repairs done. Unfortunately for me I don't have nearly the amount of support that you do so this has definitely giving me some insight on what I would need to do to survive for the times that I have to be alone. How soon were you able to get yourself dressed alone? And how difficult has it been to do so? The information you shared about the three-way poncho is a godsend because my only real form of day-to-day help will be my seven-year-old grandson. I have my three year old granddaughter as well but I know she won't completely understand the necessity to be extremely careful. She's rough even when she gives you a hug... LOL

@MLMLW
@MLMLW 3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't break that rule if I were you. The reason you can't drive is because you're still healing during those 6 wks & if you drive & get in a situation where you have to turn the wheel weird or even get into an accident you could ruin everything the surgeon did & have to start all over again. You don't want to do that because this is a painful procedure & recovery could take you 6-12 months which is what my surgeon told me. I'm 8 wks post op & still have not been cleared to drive. Yes, it sucks but after my physical therapist explained why I totally get it & not arguing about it. Hopefully, however, I'll be cleared today to be able to drive. Don't stray from what your doctor tells you to do or not do.

Here’s a tip for those who did not get an ice machine. Make sure your ice pack that you do buy isn’t too heavy. I ended up using smaller ice packs and changing them out versus a big one that just puts a lot of pressure right on the shoulder. Also the cushion that goes around your neck has stitches in it that can scratch your neck if it is the brand that I’m using. The straps that go across the seatbelts don’t always fit around the cushion so you might need to adjust that a little bit. I had a bicep tear also repaired in addition to the shoulder and found that the round, small ice packs that people use for their eyes fits or slides in around the arm while it’s in the sling. It helped reduce the bruising if you have any. Also learn how to talk to your computer or cell phone like I’m doing right now if it is your dominant hand that is in a sling.

Nurse yanked it off of me. Layed it on the table and stretched everything out. Doc says only to keep wearing it for 2 weeks and start PT. We asked if he could show us how to wear properly? I am just amazed by everyone telling me that they don't start physical therapy for 4-6 weeks! As a matter of fact, last Wednesday I was having lunch with my father and 30 year old son, whom had both had two shoulder surgeries each. They had both stated to me that their surgeon, which was the SAME surgeon I had for my recent rotator cuff surgery, was the one to call and set up physical therapy. I "freaked"... because as of that day, I was 15 days out from surgery, and had HAD physical therapy 4 times already, starting with day 3 post surgery! At the surgical center, the nurse dismissing me had given me a paper listing the physical therapy place, and said "When you call....", so I assumed I needed to call and set it up, which I did the day after surgery. Oh my goodness! I went over to my surgeons office for my post visit, just the day before on Tuesday, and both his nurse and his PA both had stated separately, that "When you begin physical therapy...", to which I had told them both that I had already been doing it! They both just said ok, like nothing was amiss. So, you can imagine my reaction the following day speaking to my dad and son, that I had called and set up PT on my own, not waiting for my doctor to order it! LOL However, when stopping by the surgeons office following the conversation, I was assured that I could continue, as did my physical therapist the following day. It turns out... and sounds very backwards, that the MORE SEVERE your injury, they want you to begin therapy immediately! I was told that most rotator cuff surgeries normally end up having two suture screws planted into the bone, where as mine had 5 ! Four in front, and one in the back. (Yeah, when I do something, I do it well! LOL) My tendon was hanging by a thread, plus my labrum was barely hanging on so they had to snip it and plant the lower end of that into my bone, and they were able to take the partial tear I had done 12 years ago, and pull that up and attach it as well! That was surprising, as I'd been told 12 years ago, that I had about a one year window to have it repaired before it was too late!?! The first thing I noticed, was there was no "lump" in mid-arm from that partial tear, which I still have on my left arm as well. I am now 18 days post op, and doing pretty well, though I am not wearing my sling nearly as much as I should! I moved back to my waterbed... sling-less, about 5 days ago, and guess what.... I can SLEEP!! LOL Oh my goodness, how great that feels! ~~ Saying this, I would NOT recommend this to somebody who normally moves around in their sleep, which I do not. If I move at night, I fully wake up and re-position myself... and I have always been that way. My side of the bed never needs made! LOL I am a stomach sleeper, and though it takes me about 15 minutes of adjusting when initially getting into bed and getting to the point where I feel no "pinch" in my shoulder, I can lay on my stomach propped up by 4 feather pillows, a neck ring for like airplanes, and a throw pillow! LOL I just could not function another day with a loss of sleep, and have never been able to sleep in a recliner, sitting up. My son told me he took off the sling after two weeks, and I didn't quite make it that long, though wear it to PT and to doctor visits! LOL BUT, I am very careful of what I do, and how I do it. It helped that I had tore this to where I could not use my arm for 2 weeks prior to surgery, because I had already learned to baby that arm, so doing so after surgery without a sling, was automatic. When my arm feels achy, I put the sling on! I stopped all drugs 3 days after surgery, and have not needed one after PT like they suggested. However, I am not allowed to take any kind of pain med except plain old aspirin, for 6 weeks. So far, physical therapy, even at day three.... feels wonderful! Getting my arm to 90 degrees, even 3 days from surgery, didn't hurt but felt just like I imagine it does my cat to arch his back and stretch! I am sure I have days ahead of me that will be painful, but personally... I feel not wearing the sling lends to more movement, even if very slight, that works like therapy. Again.... I am not recommending doing as I am, but just sharing what I have experienced.-- Hey... I fed 500 head of cows this morning for the first time while my husband and son were at a neighbor's branding, and was able to uncover and clean out my waterfall pond yesterday.... just don't tell my therapist or surgeon, as I am certain they would "freak" !! LOL
