I once read this in the UK book of Heroic Failures. In a small town some workmen arrived to install a mail collection box but they didn’t have the special key to adjust the metal band that went around the pole. So they slipped the hoop over the top of the wooden pole but alas it got stuck at seven feet above the ground. It stayed this way for a week. When the workmen arrived and adjusted the mailbox to the correct height, they found a few letters inside it, apparently a ladder was provided.

Living on the edge of a Federal park, one of our new landmates started freaking out because there was a car parked on the track above our land so was reaching for her rifle. I told her to chill, went up to the car openly, waved and asked if everything was okay. They, too, had found themselves in the horror movie scenario of running out of fuel in the middle of nowhere among hostile hillbillies. I got them the gas we use for the emergency generator and got them back on their way wishing everyone would just chill the f*ck out. We had a store in town for several decades called “Mags and F*gs” (minus the *). It was the best magazine shop in town. I worked in bookstores and just had the usual mass-market magazines so if someone came in looking for something niche we would send them there. Anyone who didn’t know of the shop would look askance at you and you would have to explain the they sold magazines and cigarettes. (The fact that the owners were gay and it was as much a play on words was something that most people knew). I had been sending people there for several years. One day a man came in for a military magazine if I recall and I directed him there. He look SHOCKED, more shocked than usual. In my mind I re-ran what I has said and realized that I said “for” instead of “and”! I was horrified. I apologised and assured him that that I would never deliberately call it what I did. I’m not sure he was convinced but he didn’t say anything else about it. And wouldn’t you know it that from then on I would catch myself saying “for” instead of “and”… I had to stop just before “and” to make sure that I said it instead of “for”.

I and roughly 2 mins in and I was just telling my dad about the thing with zebra crossings and I just found out there are pelican crossing!? Also this is the funniest thing I have seen in a while and after a really bad week and cancelled netball practice this is just what I need. Thanks, Memes Time.

Superb. Thank you. Now, I'll change my "local accent" for the third time today (I was the exact same man who, when you stopped to ask for directions, gave them to you --- "Bristol? Hang a left." "Oxford? They admitted YOU?! Go back thru Bristol." "Portsmouth? Return to Oxford and start again." I was amazed when, each time, not only did you not recognize me, you also thought that I knew what I was talking about. So I figure you ended up somewhere near Paris. No? Turkey? REALLY? Wow. That's some drive. Need directions back to Bristol?). [Note: Obviously this message is from America. The word "seemed" --- which, if I had been a Brit, would appear at least 18 times in it --- appears not once.]
