Testing them yes but tipping no. Tipping allows the continuation of taking advantage of service staff by paying lower wages because tips “make up for it”. It’s not our responsibility to pay the wage of a businesses employees other than by giving our business. When tipping stops fare wages for staff will inevitably happen.

3:08 When I worked at a coffee shop, our tips were disappearing from the jar at least once a day. Whether it totaled 1$ or 10$, it’d be gone. We finally figured out who was doing it- an uppity Karen who drive an incredibly nice car. We were told to stealthily just place it under the counter when she pulled up. Last straw was during a lunch rush; a certain super sweet guy came in. He tipped us 5$ each *every time* he’d come in. I was the only one out front, so I was cashier & barista. I forgot about the tip jar. After the rush, the tip jar was empty. This time she even took the change. No more stealthy bs. Next time I waited until she got up to the register. I looked her in the eyes while I moved the tip jar underneath the register. She had the audacity to get offended. “Why did you move the tip jar?!” “Because you like to steal from the minimum-wage workers serving you.” I got talked to because she literally cried to HR. Then they saw the recording of her dumping the tip jar in her purse. She never came back again. The company lost about 10$ per week in revenue; we gained at last 20$ per week in tips. Win-win.

@@lisaty5937 It was pretty amazing. There was no shame, no embarrassment, just a “how dare you?!” Like I said, we were supposed to be “nice” about it, hiding it quietly because customer service and all that bs, but that shift was the last fucking straw. I was an 18yo shift supervisor controlling the entire front end during a morning rush with a line wrapping around while simultaneously trying to calm my 50yo coworker as she had one of her many meltdowns in the back; it didn’t help that my cafe was inside its actual corporate headquarters, and the CEO was in line. I had more in that jar from that one rush than some entire days because I didn’t have to split it. And it was gone. Not even a penny left. Apparently she put on quite the performance for HQ. I was well-known throughout the _entire_ headquarters as being very friendly; customers usually loved me, even the tougher ones, so while she was crying about how cruel I was, purposefully embarrassing her in front of all those people after being so mean to her week after week, they were incredibly cynical. But even though customer service thought it was BS and my manager empathized and was great, I *_still_* almost got fired because Karen knew someone who knew someone who knew someone. The CEO also believed that if it happened, he _obviously_ would have seen it! Thank God for that recording! Apparently the CEO got so insulted by the *smile* on her face as she did it and the horror of other customers watching that he sent his assistant down with a 5$ tip to apologize lol. This was years ago 2006 lol. I am so old🤣 but I have used this as an example that Karens have always existed, looong before there was an actual term for them. For some reason, one of the funniest parts to me, is that _she had _*_THE_*_ ‘Karen’ hairstyle!!!_ 🤣

I always thought waiters weren't paid that well in Germany, but after seeing how much an American waitress earns on average as a normal salary... Heavens, no wonder so many Americans have to have a second job or, in the case of the waiter, depend on tips. And all the stress without a decent holiday or health insurance. Then when I read here how mean and disrespectful some are to the waitress.... WTF?! Even if waiters/workers at McDonald's, for example, are not paid as well as they should be in Germany (in my opinion), here they at least get 24 days' holiday and health insurance (required by law).

LOL I have been and out of the hospital, many a time, over the past 8yrs. The last two trips, were - praying for, at least - my last ones, to solve the issues, I had; the one before last, being extremely major. I was on the floor that was a step down from ICU. Even I still straightened up my room, during the day and even before I left. I made close friends with the nurses, and they would always tell horror stories, of how people can be. Thankfully, I’ve always gotten the feedback that I am a very easy patient to deal with - even when I am being difficult. Which, not to brag, or anything. I definitely get not wanting to straighten up, when not feeling well; though - I think the above comment is correct.. At least family members could have a little courtesy. Hospital work - even janitorial - isn’t easy, in the slightest; and the hours so many of ‘em keep, because of the always of the job.. Plus, if the nurses and staff were, truly, supportive during One’s stay - it’s a great way to at least show a bit of appreciation, for what they do.

I am not an American. It took me years to understand that in the US, tips are how servers make living, not merely an optional decision to thank them for their service. In my country, there is a service charge added to your restaurant bill, which goes to the server. Furthermore, servers are not paid below the minimum wage. After reading these, I wonder if some US states should consider a service charge instead so miserly, selfish, thoughtless or inconsiderate people no longer have the option of not paying for the service they receive.

Wages for waitstaff are $2 a hour for many restaurants. Working an 8 hour shift is only $16. Yes. When I was in college they built a Ruby Tuesday from the ground up (they didn't just spoof up an old building). It stayed there for about 3 years and the management was so crappy, it shut down. The staff (waiters, clerks, etc.) was fantastic, but the management refused to pay workers more than $2 an hour and if there weren't a lot of customers to leave tips, it was the staff's problem, not management's. They even changed managers several times and according to workers, every one was worst than the previous. This was within walking distance of the university I went to, so a lot of students worked there. I always tried leaving a big tip. Wasn't remotely surprised to hear that particular Ruby Tuesday was shutting its doors for good when it did. I pray they have better management at other Ruby Tuesdays.

Some of these are outrageous, but (as a Brit) I do think tipping culture is awful. We typically see 12.5% or 15% when we go out, and it will take a lot for me to remove it, but it is optional, and if it's on the bill, I don't leave extra. I do think "servers" have a tough job, and I'm usually quite happy to thank, especially if they are keeping all/majority of the tip. On cruise ships, I'll remove the tip and just give cash to the people I want to, as an extension of this. I think it's really an issue that there's an expectation of a tip. If it's not optional, it's a tax. If it is optional, it should be an option... I am effectively subsidizing what can be multi-billion £/$ organisations who are allowed to pay their staff peanuts, and them I'm the bad guy if I refuse to do so? Regulators, governments and companies really need to step up. Staffing costs is a perfectly legitimate expense running a business, so built it in to my cost for the meal like you would with lighting, rent, insurance, and dozens of other things.

Mic drop! You are completely correct. On a side note there are small startup companies which are just barely scraping by so they really CANNOT pay their staff more. I worked as a cashier at a restaurant that also offered carry-out. We had something called Street Tacos, which come 3 to an order. One of my managers (she was newer to this place) took a lady's order over the phone for some street tacos. I was completely uninvolved and unaware of the order, so I didn't think anything of it when the lady came to get her order and she had 3 orders of the street tacos (so, 9 tacos total). She said nothing as I took her payment and checked over the order. Then, after I handed her the bag of food, she suddenly said, all frustrated and upset "Yeah, I actually only wanted one order of these but no one answered the phone when I tried to call back so that's why there's no tip." and walked away, leaving me dumbfounded. Thing is, I could have very easily corrected the "mistake" had she said something when she came in. But, no, she paid for food she didn't want and waited until she was walking away to blame me because someone else misunderstood her. And this is one of the mildest examples of a bad customer I've had to deal with. People are simply amazing.

I normally leave a minimum of $5, no matter how small my check is, unless the server was just outright nasty. Unfortunately some servers don't like to wait on people who are dining alone because they think they won't get a good tip. I was actually in a restaurant one time and I was seated but then no one came to take my order, others who came after me got their food and I actually heard the servers arguing over who "had to wait on her". One time I remember going out to eat for my birthday and when the server brought our drinks I could see that my glass was dirty (I was drinking milk so it was quite obvious) so we asked her to replace the drink..she acted pissed off, and when I unrolled my silverware the fork was dirty so I asked for a clean one. She brought it out and almost slammed it onto the table, once we got our food she never came back again. I was going to order dessert but we were not given the chance. The check had a section on the back to write comments so we wrote briefly what happened and how it ruined my birthday dinner. We paid and the manager was the one at the register. After we walked out the door we turned around and saw him turn the check over and read it, and he did NOT look happy. The day we got engaged we went to a pizza place for dinner and the waitress took our order and never came back. After almost an hour the manager came over and asked if we had ordered yet. We told him yes, but the server never brought our food. He apologized, said our meal was on the house and he rushed our food to us. We later saw him in the kitchen yelling at the server and then we didn't see her again. My friend Tony used to be a server/bartender at Red Lobster and I saw some of the crappy things that people did. I would come in for lunch once a week and the management had an out of the way table set up so I could study while I was eating. One man came in and he wanted his salad done a certain way and Tony was the only one who could fix it to suit him. So Tony made his salad, went back to check on him a few times..the normal stuff a good server does. The guy finished and left...he left Tony a 25 cent tip and on the way out complained to the hostess that his server was "too friendly" Tony asked me what he should have done and I told him if the guy came in again to walk up, slap his hand down on the table and say, "What the hell do you want!" Another group came in and they put all the kids at a table with no adults and the adults sat in a different section. Well, the kids got bored and didn't understand about having to wait for their food to be prepared so they got very rowdy and were throwing the cheddar biscuits at each other. Tony and another server were taking care of that party and if I remember right they didn't tip very much at all, esp considering the size of the group. Then there was the church group that came in and not only did they not tip much, but they ended up stealing the salt and pepper shakers when they left (at that time they had shakers that looked like lighthouses). So many more, including the woman with 3 kids who had a sugar daddy. She would come in, order the most expensive stuff on the menu and the kids ended up wasting most of it. Once she got some spaghetti for the baby and instead of cutting it up on a plate, she dumped some on top of the table and the baby just smashed his hand down on it and smeared it all over the table. She also flashed him once to show off her boob job (she was in the back dining area so no one else saw it) after he had told her that he wasn't interested and that he didn't want to lose his job. Her sugar daddy never ate with them, he just came in and paid the bill and left. I treat servers very well so they are usually very glad to see me and sometimes will run to put me in their section. I had one server at Frisches who was very good, very friendly and always went out of her way to make sure I got everything the way I wanted it. At that time there was a website called Planet Feedback where you could write complaints or compliments and they would deliver them to the company. Well, I wrote a compliment for that server praising her and said that she was a good example of what a great server was, and that more servers should strive to be like her. Well, the next time I went in to eat she came up and gave me a big hug and was almost crying. She said that her manager had gotten a copy of my letter and had given it to her and she said it made what had been a bad day so much better and she thanked me many times. We were eating out at Cheddars one time and there was a table of 4 sitting opposite us. When the server brought out the drink that was supposed to be shaken at the table, the top came off and some of the drink went on the man's pants. He threw an absolute fit and said she had ruined his pants. Then the one woman was complaining about her food being cold and the server offered to have it reheated or remade, but no, the customer just wanted to be hateful. The manager came over and tried to see what she could do and the customers were hateful to her too and demanded that their entire bill be comped and that they be paid to have the man's pants cleaned. After they left the server came over and was on the verge of tears. I know how it feels to be verbally abused by customers, I worked in retail for 13 years. I scooted over and had her sit down next to me for a few minutes and talked to her and she did actually start crying so I put my arms around her and let her cry on my shoulder. We were super nice to her and when we paid our bill we gave her a very large tip, in part to make up for the other party stiffing her. I also made sure to talk to the manager and tell her that the server did nothing wrong with the other party and that we thought she did an excellent job taking care of us.

I am always polite, friendly and civil, doesn't cost anything, and I always add a gratuity even if it's small if it's a sit down service where they bring your meal. I've rarely had any issues, in fact I've been given free coffees etc because of my manner, some people in the South of England especially London can be quite off hand and abrupt, and I'm Northern born so have a more friendly polite attitude. I'll never forget dating a London comedian once, we went to a cafe and there was a nice waiter who was Sri Lankan and my date told me off for chatting to him, as we are "superior" (oh jeez) and you don't talk to waiters or thank them. Then another guy in London this time an artist who said well you've thanked them so why should I? Because servers are compensated for their work by the customers at the tables they serve, *if you cannot afford to pay them, you should not be in a restaurant asking for table service*.

@@liagamer4265 One of the reasons that people never get out of debt is that they never know when they can afford something. If money's so tight you can't afford the tip you should not spend it on going to a restaurant but put it in your piggy bank. There are better ways to "treat" yourself anyway. For many people eating out is the one thing they can think of when the subject of "treating yourself" comes up, but that's not really true. Especially when money is tight and so you can only afford a cheap restaurant, where the food has low quality and is prepared in disgusting kitchens. Which means that you are eating crap there. At home, when you cook yourself, you certainly don't eat crap (unless you limit yourself to microwaving industrial crap, of course).

Table of two with a check of $50...going rate of 20% nets the server $10...four tables per hour = $40. That is...IF the people being served are not trash like the ones in this compilation. Back when I waited tables in the 80s, the average I made was over $100 a night. Even at $15 per hour, no tips, on the average shift, I would not have made that much.

However, every business that has tipped wait staff making less than the federal minimum wage, must pay the difference if claimed tips plus their hourly wage do not equal the minimum wage. No one would wait tables if it was as ridiculous as you suggest. Meanwhile, even with a 2-3 dollar hourly wage, any above average wait staff can bring in $40k a year.

They’re good people, we want them to stay in business, so they will always get 20%!!! I am always super nice to servers, no matter what, and I will never stiff a server out of their tip since I know how hard serving is. They serve u food, drinks, make sure your order is correct, etc. It doesn't look like its an easy job especially if they have to deal with the likes of these people! These people act like arses and then post it to their fb, ig, etc. You would think they would be embarrassed of themselves. What people don't get is is that waitresses/bartenders and other types of servers get paid way less because of the expected tips. When the minimum wage here was like $14 I was getting paid $10 plus all my tips. Which averaged out to a normal paycheck each week. It's one of the only jobs someone without an education can make a living wage. I went to college and couldn't find a job so I went to bartending school and make a living wage because of my tips. Thanks to Doug ford removing the rent cap the cost of living has sky rocketed in Toronto so quickly so I don't know how I'd survive without them. Working 6 days a week before tips I'd bring home maybe $500. My rent alone is $1700 which is pretty standard for a two bedroom here atm...so do the math. By no means am I living extravagantly. I don't even have a car and still have to be extremely frugal in order to survive the month. That all being said I understand not everyone can tip all the time and I have never treated any customer different based on how they tip or the lack there of which I think has made many non tipping regulars decide to begin tipping me. Other bartenders and servers will literally avoid the tables or customers at the bar they know won't tip which is very noticeable so I end up with the most tables by the end of the night. I do my best to treat people how I'd like to be treated because it's the right thing to do and I know that karma will repay me eventually someway somehow. Just try and be compassionate and show empathy for your fellow human being from both perspectives and be the change you want to see in the world. Love and light be with you all. Cheers! 💚🙏🌿

I've worked as a waitress before. Paid $2.00 or less an hour. Not once did I think it was the customers responsibility to make up the difference in my pay. If they did leave a tip it was because my service was excellent and I appreciated it greatly. I did work with people tho who thought it was the customers duty to leave them money no matter what. I would see them ignore regulars who tipped well because they knew they were getting the money no matter what and they would complain about the people who only tipped 10%. "If they can't afford 20% they shouldn't eat out." Wrong. If you can't afford to pay your bills for the amount of money your employer agrees to pay you, you should get a different (or second) job. Only chain restaurants can afford to pay minimum wage to employees. Small business employers are barely making ends meet as it is. One of the restaurants I worked at was spending more to stay open than they were taking in monthly. After six months they closed but the waitresses I worked with were absolutely horrible about what they said about out boss. Personal responsibility folks.

One of my pet peeves is when the restaurant "suggests" a tip based on the total including tax. (Longhorn Steakhouse and others.) It drives my wife nuts, but I always ask if the restaurant shares the additional funds with the taxing authority.

To be honest, some, if not all, the servers made more money on payday than we bussers did. I agree, tho, pay them a decent wage & let the tips be extra for doing a great job. Lol I paid a waitress extra money to teach my former best friend a listen in friendship and she said that was the best tip she had all week! What happened was a week before that. My best friend invited me to go out to eat with her family. I told her all I have is $10 and I just started a new job since I graduated from highschool a week before. She told me no problem just don't worry about anything. So I went out to eat with her and her family. I got a cheap meal but I was 41cents short so I asked her if I could Barrow $3 so I could pay my bill and give the waitress the leftover. She said no and that was my problem. Her whole family left me at the restaurant. I was stuck! The waitress kept bugging me for my ticket and I was in tears. Just by chance I found a coin purse I forgot I had. I had only enough change to pay my bill and that was it. I went over and begged the manager to let me Barrow the phone to call my parents to pick me up. At that time I lived in the middle of nowhere and had no idea where the nearest pay phone was. After begging for about 30 minutes (this was before cell phones were popular) he allowed me to use it. My family came and picked me up and left a tip. So the next Friday I thought I would get even. So I called my best friend and asked if she wanted to go and have a girls hangout. Dinner and shopping she said yes. So Saturday I picked her up and we went out to eat first. Before we got out of the car she said she didn't have a lot of money and all she has was $13. I told her don't worry about. So I asked to sit closer to the back of the restaurant away from the cash register. So my friend sat where her back was facing the register. I told her to order whatever she wanted and don't worry about it. So she ordered a lot of food I ordered something simple. I ate faster than. Her cuz she ordered a lot. So after I was done I excuse my self to use the restroom. I found my waitress. I asked her to split my check with my friend and asked her to do me a favor. I told her the story of what happened a week before. And I offered her a very large tip if she would do the same to her that she did to me. She said yes! So I paid my ticket and gave her the large tip. I went back to the table. She waited 10 minutes then she came over and handed my friend her check. My friend handed the check and the $13 she had on her to me and told the waitress I was paying for the rest. I told her no that she shouldn't have ordered more than she could pay for. The waitress told me I could go cuz I already paid for my ticket. My friend started yelling I don't have enough. So I reached into my pocket and gave her the 41cents she wouldn't give me and I gave it to her. I told her now I'm a better person than you! Now the waitress is demanding the payment. I walked away. I looked through the window as my friend cried just like I did. But at least the restaurant has a pay phone outside for her to call her family. The next week I saw the waitress she said that her dad picked her up and yelled at her for trying to take advantage of her friend.

One Cent Tip: Friend and I were about 14 or 15 years old. We went to a local restaurant that had counter service and sat there. Only customer was at the counter. The lady working the counter was in a baaaaad mood. For instance, we ordered a soda refill, which was free there, and it took about 10 minutes before we saw them. Our orders were ready but she was too busy talking with other waitresses, stuff like that. So when leaving, my friend wasn’t going to leave a tip. To my 14 yo Machiavellian mind she was probably used to no tips as a lot of people didn’t give them. So I put 1 penny, $0.01 US cent, under the lip of my plate. She lifted the -plate, saw the penny, and HURLED it across the restaurant.

I haven't eaten in a restaurant in years. I grew bitter about paying a server a 20% commission and then having to flag them down and ask for a refill on my drink. Isn't that what the tip is for? I read somewhere that in the early days of country Inns, the word tip was developed as an acronym meaning "To Insure Promptness" which was something I rarely saw. The whole restaurant experience just lacked pleasantness. Rude, sloppy customers, overpriced entrees, subpar food, excessive wait times. But I never skimped on the tips because these people have bills to pay too. I merely stopped attending the shows. Now the food is cheaper, cooked the way I like it, served immediately and I know exactly what is in it.

I have had similar experiences. People who do not bother to dress appropriately when eating at a public place. People who do not feel deodorant is necessary. People who feel that ethics, manners and empathy are relics of a bygone age. At the end of the day I do not like people very much and prefer to eat at home.

People who treat hardworking servers like this should not be allowed to eat in restaurants.
