My favorite thing about this movie is how 'Remember Me' is sung so many times, and each time with different context and meaning. To De La Cruz it is all about him, it's a fast paced song about his ego, but when we see the memory of Hector singing it to Coco, it's a slow melodic song about a father saying goodbye and then the ending with Miguel singing it, it takes a whole new meaning again, for a great grandmother to recall her father in her old age...it's simply beautiful, that the same song and lyrics can mean different things.
@ronweber14028 ай бұрын

We watched this for the first time together, and I couldn't help but cry my eyes out, but what she did was truly breathtaking for me. She held me in her arms and said she wanted to honour my mum on her ofrenda. Me and Maria are still going as strong as ever in our relationship. She is my whole universe and I am blessed every single day I get to wake beside her. When I proposed to her I played the song at the end of the movie "proud corazón" and sang it to her in Spanish. Performing music, especially vocal music, may help defer and lessen dementia. My best friend of 25 years, Evi, lives in Guanajuato, the city Pixar used as their reference for the City of the Dead. It's referenced down to specific alleyways, like the one where Imelda first sings to Miguel. When my grandmother was still alive, she basically adopted Evi as an unofficial grandchild. Evi is a chocoholic, so my grandmother would send her a nice card and expensive box of chocolates for her birthday every year. This went on for six years until she passed away in 2005. After my grandmother passed away, Evi added her photo to her family's ofrenda. It's still there to this day, nearly 20 years later. Needless to say this movie holds a very special place in my heart. 💜

@kriscynical Guanajuato city inspired the city of the Dead, the alleyway is el callejon del beso. I was born in the state of Guanajuato, Salamanca is almost as flat as a pancake, and it's just famous for the Pemex oil refinery. It's part of the Bajio region of Guanajuato, which is an agricultural and industrial area. It's not so inspiring for a Pixar movie.
@kriscynical7 ай бұрын
@@buscador2007 Okay? Then I misunderstood which place she was referring to as far as Salamanca or the bigger Guanajuato when referring to "this is the place they referenced". Her house is in Salamanca but the government-run historical office she works with (she works on preservation of historical sites) and the university she teaches history at are in Guanajuato. My mistake. I changed it. She probably wasn't super specific about it because I'm in Dallas Texas. It would be like me specifying between Arlington, the smaller city _within_ the Dallas Metroplex where my home is, vs the overall Metroplex. She wouldn't know the differences up here any more than I know the differences down there. My main point was how much it meant to me that she put my grandmother's photo on her family's ofrenda because I was incredibly close to my grandmother and it touched me that Evi wanted her to be remembered. 🙁

I guess you have missed that part... when Imelda sees Hector, she says "How many times must I turn you away?!" This means that Hector has tried to make amends with Imelda, whe she died and got to the land of the dead. But she wouldn't listen. Not only did Coco give back the piece of the photo, the moment she started talking about her dad, it means she was passing down stories, which was crucial for Hector's survival even if his photo could not be returned/restored. The photo only gave the right to pass the bridge. I also like the contrast between de la cruz's version of Remember me, which is just for show, while Hector's was quiet, sensual, private, gentle ❤

I'm latino and raised by my grandma. It's insanely common for the matriarch of the family to hold the family together. My grandmother was raised very poor,( and her grandmother had been a slave), and when she was very little her sister dropped her, and they couldn't afford the right doctors so her legs didn't heal right and she had a very large limp all her life. When she was about 6 years old, her mom (a seamstress/maid) was making a dress for her rich boss's daughter and she bought some scraps to also make my grandma one too. It was the "it" dress for girls that year, and my grandma was all happy limping around the house with it. The boss asked his daughter to bring her own dress to him, and then in front of my grandma and her mom he ripped his daughter's dress and said, "My daughter isn't going to dress like a servant's daughter". My grandma said that was when she decided her life wouldn't end there, being a maid. So she asked the village butcher to help her write a letter to the president of Brazil, and in it she asked if he could pay for her education, one day she would pay him back. And surprisingly enough, he did! She walked to the bus stop even little, took a long ride, walked miles and went to school every day. She spent all night memorizing the books to be in top of the class. And eventually she graduated, got her higher education, and opened up her own school for the needy and girls, and was the principal of a huge school in our town. (And she wrote the President a check, with interest!). She always said that though her body wasn't perfect, her mind was her one thing she had to even the odds. So when she was older, and got a diagnosis for Alzheimer's, it was heartbreaking for the family to see her slowly lose her memory. She passed away last year, hugging a doll she had, that she thought was her daughter, my mom. This movie hits me hard, because there would always be these random moments of clarity, where she'd ask what was going on, and we'd update her on how all her children grew up well, became successful, her grandchildren too, and she'd smile in relief and say, "I knew it would be worth it, people told me it was a waste of time, a girl going to college and working, but I knew I'd make it".

I watched this with my then girlfriend/now wife in early 2018. It was the first Pixar movie that I decided at the beginning that I wasn't going to cry, not in front of her. Boy was I wrong!

As a Mexican and as someone who watched this movie literally a week after my grandma passed Coco has a special place in my heart, so happy seeing this reaction

There are a number of references that, if you didn't grow up in Mexico or with a Mexican family, may go over your head. The "weaponized shoe" is the "chancla", the sandal that Mexican moms always threatened us kids to use to spank us with if we misbehaved. The masked wrestler with the silver mask is "El Santo" (the Saint), one of Mexico's original super heroes, the skeleton with the funny hat is "Cantinflas", one of Mexico's most beloved comedians and movie stars. Singers like Pedro Infante are also featured.

There are many more references and symbolism than you mention. Some have to do with culture and popular characters like the ones you mention, others with pre-Hispanic symbolism, others with a specific worldview. The film itself is beautiful, but decoding each element requires a lot of information for those who are not culturally familiar with it.

Not at all surprised. Such a beautiful movie, and seeing your reactions always makes me feel it too. My reaction the first time was very much like yours.

I don’t know if it’s you and you’re crying but I cried like hell for the millionth time to this movie. Arguably one of Disney Pixar’s best 🥲

I sob every time I watch this movie....and I watch it surprisingly frequently. Can't get enough of the story, the characters, the gorgeous animation.

Ah...Coco. So we're crying today. Angie: ...drop a bell on him! Me: ...wait for it... The chanclas (slippers/sandals) are serious weapons of pain and humiliation, favored by angry mamas, tías, and abuelas the world over. Once the chanclas come off...it's over. Glad you enjoyed this fantastic movie! This one brings the tears, sure, but they're good tears. 😁

8:30 As a musician, I cannot describe the second hand rage I felt watching her destroy the guitar, that he made himself. It was a pure testament of his passion for music. EDIT I forgot about the hug she tries to give him. I SWEAR.
@theaikidoka8 ай бұрын
Yes, this is the kind of act where you do something in the heat of the moment, but you can't take it back. Replacing the guitar or apologising mean nothing compared to what it meant to the person. It's tough to watch.

I first saw this on a milestone birthday. My father had died just over a year before, and while I had a good birthday, I'd briefly thought about him that morning, and thought how nice it would be to have him there. Then I went to see this that evening, knowing nothing much about it, and loved it. It felt like a gift from him.

Im glad you liked this movie. This movie always made me cry because it reminds me of my father passing away a few hours after meeting his grandson for the first time and learning he was named after him in honour of how much he sacrifice for our family.😢

One thing about this movie is the way the surprises and twists recontextualize what we've already seen. The most obvious one is probably the song "Remember Me," which at the start is just Ernesto's most famous song, then takes on more meaning as we realize that the Land of the Dead is run on memory, so it must have more significance... but then at the end you find out that it was really for Coco, because her Papa had to be away from home sometimes and he just wanted her to know how much he loved her, and as you listen to the lyrics that had already played a few times throughout the movie, it's obvious that the real meaning of the song was there all along. But maybe my favorite is just before Miguel finds out that Hector is his great great grandfather, it's because Hector is feeling hopeless and the thing that he thinks of is Coco, the only thing he wanted to do was to go to her and tell her that her Papa was trying to go home to her. The only thing that mattered to him was getting back to Coco. And all of a sudden the disguise and all the other petty crimes and lies go from "I don't trust this guy" to "he was just trying to see Coco." I see that desperation and suddenly it's an admirable, fatherly love.

Not surprised you cried. As I pressed play on the video, I was actually thinking, "Hope someone warned her to hydrate before this movie." Also, when Miguel's abuela appeared onscreen, my first thought was we were getting a glimpse into your future. Someone that intensely loves the people in her life, but don't you dare cross her. 😅
