I hadn't watched the original show in years, but I remembered Chawls, being attacked in the final episode by Gyrich. He was dying but his space bird girlfriend, Llilandra took him away. I always took that as them being together his final days, over some miraculous cure, and that he did actually die. Of course, I was a cynical late teen back when it aired so that appealed to my macabre sensibilities.

The writers who created this show knew exactly what they were doing. From the opening to Cyclops finally getting the respect that he was robbed of in the movies. I hope you enjoy this series as much as I did. With that being said, Been shouting "Magneto was Right" from the mountain tops for decades now and hearing him refer to them as "his" X-men: Quality. So Wolverine, Rogue, Storm, and Beast are all the same voice actors. And it's 97 becuase the original show ended in 1996. So they're honoring the show by essentially picking up where it left off, and wanted to keep virtually the same design.

The power sets are similar but completely different, Roberto's powers amplify his strength, agility and durability, he can turn his body into solar energy akin to the human torch's "flame on" ability, and like the human torch he can also fly, in the fox films they made him look like a generic fire guy, so I really like how they gave it a distinct look here in xmen 97, that said I dont think pyro has ever had a "human torch" form or has ever flown, he can only shape the fire that's why he always needs a source of fire be it a lighter like in the xmen films or a flame thrower like in the animated series or comics. Hope that this has helped explain the difference a little better.

This show is such a trip and it took me a long time to figure out why. Usually when you watch or play things from your youth, you get smacked by how much lower quality or unsophisticated it was vs your memory. With this show, the creators somehow reached into your mind and pulled out the idealized version of xmen you remember, rather than the remaking what it actually was. Also, i somehow didnt appreciate it as a kid, but this was a full on soap opera, and i am here for it.

Main reason Cyclops is like this is because the showrunner mained Cyclops in Marvel vs Capcom, and wanted to show off why Cyclops was his "anchor". Mission accomplished =P

As a comics reader since the late 70's, this is the first time I've actually "gotten" why people like Cyclops. This version of the character is missing a lot of comics Cyke's problematic history, which always turned me off of him. Now I can appreciate the coolness.

Don't forget, or in case you didn't know: The X-Men as a whole were modeled after the Civil Rights movement. Charles is meant to represent the peaceful ideology of Martin Luthor King Jr, while Magneto represents the more hardlined approach of Malcolm X. Over time the X-Men have come to represent many different civil rights issues.

Stan Lee said this wasn't initially true. He just got tired of coming up with origins for powers so mutants was an easy way to explain alot of characters away. It was later that the parallels were drawn.

Jubilee is a far better more audience stand in. i really didn't care for this version of him. can't say i know him all that well from the comics either. but most of the time he was on screen i really just didn't like him.

@@sakisaotome6753 Yeah, Jubilee was more relatable. She's just a kid thrown into a bad situation. Roberto was a rich kid who thought his wealth would protect him. I do think that's an interesting point of view though. He may not be particularly likable, but I like seeing the point of view of someone who usually benefits from privilege have to deal with having that stripped away.

Saturday morning cartoons were really big in the 90s and most families would have 1 tv hooked up to the cable in the living room so mom and dad probably made you "take turns" choosing shows. The ads were the same between them and many kids liked the ads better than the shows.

Cyclops was always the fan favorite. But then a comic book arc happened that butchered his character, and then people started liking Wolverine. They tried to retcon it a bit, and the cartoon made him popular again, but he never really got back to full fame. - And yes, almost all voice actors are back. The creator of this show had this stipulation. Some sound a bit different just because they're older. - The intros change! See if you can catch the differences. - I'm pretty sure it's Xmen 97 bc it ended in 96 so it's like the season we would've gotten. One thing is important for you to know for this series in case you've forgotten from the original. NOT A SPOILER. If you had watched the recap special to prepare you for this it would've told you: - Xavier isn't dead. He got hurt, and an alien race took him to heal but the X-Men went with it so that people will leave him alone. It helps explain things like Morph turning into him. It's not as dark as it seems. As far as they know, Xavier is hurt, they don't know if he'll be able to heal or ever come back. But they don't think he's dead. Just the world does (I don't know if Magneto knows, I can't remember). - Also Cyclop's power are force based, so it pushes, doesn't burn (although it causes friction and can heat up). they get it wrong most movies and why he can fire it at people and not like... disintegrate them.

I saw this notification as it popped on my phone - i had to watch immediately 😎 Growing up with the original, I was so hyped when they first teased this. Somehow it is better than I could imagine. The first episode is great in the way that even though this is a direct continuation of the 90s Animated Series (hence 97), including the Charles of it all, but they give you enough to catch you up and let this show stand on it's own. The art style is a modern tribute to the original style, they got original voices (where possible), and kept the original theme with extra instruments. I could go on forever, so happy to see you reacting to X-Men 97, see you in the next one.

Hi Angela, excellent reaction as always! 28:54 No spoilers, but letting you know as a franchise fan who read the ~10 monthly X-Men comic titles in the '90s that X-Men 97 DOES play to nostalgia by incorporating characters/events from several '90s storylines. I think it was a good move since many people who watched the original animated series back then are likely to have read and remember those comics too, but the story progression is nowhere near identical so it was still new to me. As someone who watched X-Men on TV but couldn't remember where the plot left off decades ago, I feel like X-Men 97 does a fantastic job getting old fans back in gear with old characters while not requiring any previous knowledge from new fans. Hope you enjoy the rest of the season!

I too has happy Cyclops finally got his due in this iteration. Thing about Cyclops is he not only has to stop bad guys but also think of how it looks on mutants with their actions. While Xavier does have the ideas and hope being on the frontline Scott is upfront of what is really going on and that is the difference between him than Xavier.

@11:22 No, quite the contrary. Despite the differences Magneto had with Charles over the years, he still tried to save him. In the finale of the original cartoon, Scott, Jean, and Logan reached out to Magneto just before he and his brotherhood were about to launch an attack on humanity. They convinced him to help save his longtime friend. Magneto wasn’t able to, but his powers still allowed him to revive Charles long enough to say goodbye. He had some very sweet things to say to the X-Men.

They have taken bits and pieces of various comic arcs to fill out this season. There are at least 4 major story arcs that they borrow from this season (5 if you count the teaser we see at the end of the season). Which is impressive when you think about how much content there is in those story lines, and how little time they had to tell them. But boy did they make it work.

cyclops was actually my second favorite character, my first was storm because I had a big old baby gay crush on her and because she was so awesome, but Cyclops was always near and dear to my heart. I felt like he was a good leader and always got the short end of the stick because he wasn't the 'bad boy' of the group, especially in the movies. I'm so glad the show gives him the proper respect he's deserved but never got outside of comics

Its called “97” because the old show was cancelled in 96. This is supposed to be a continuation of the 90s show. All of the old voices came back except 3: Jubilee, Gambit, and Magneto. The series in 96 ended with Charles’ murder. Bishop was actually in the Days of Future Past movie.

I don't know anything about the new series, but Magneto led the "Astonishing X-Men" during the Age of Apocalypse event and in one of the episodes of the show he was the leader of X-Men in one of the post apocalyptic futures they had to prevent with time travel. Everytime this happens he's an effective leader, but shit gets dark

I have to admit that when i heard they were bringing back the original X-Men cartoon I had a mix of joy and fear. With Disney's track record as of late I felt that this could go bad very very easily. Luckily those fears were set to rest. This show is amazing and a great love letter to the original. Please keep watching cause it gets even better.
