What's interesting is that Mormons in space makes a whole lot more sense when you study their doctrine and historical claims. Plus the reference to organized religion and strife is poignant when referring to Mormons. Again, that's something you'll have to study. Simplified? They think heaven is on other planets, and they went to war with the US government as well as the Free Masons.

The best part of The Expanse is finishing the series and then rewatching to pick out all the massive clues you couldn't possibly have picked up on the first time through. The worst part is watching someone else miss the same clues and not being able to spoil it for them.

Precisely. I know it's been said of many shows and films, but with The Expanse, the devil is REALLY in the details here. It's astonishing just how many seemingly insignificant bits of dialog or small items in the background become huge things down the road - the series really does expect you the viewer to do the homework and notice this stuff. I mean...Avasarala and her grandson chatting on the roof in this episode...HELLO!

Anyway, Intelligence Minister Durano says: _"I was merely being specific. In my experience, if you can't say what you mean, you can never mean what you say. The details are everything."_

Shed was one of the original characters in the tabletop RPG that was the core origin of the story (it went through a lot of layers. I really didn't like their choice until I watched a bit more, and realized that the actor, Wes Chatham, was absolutely _nailing_ the role! Which (no spoilers) is a lot more tricky than it might seem! I _still_ don't think he _looks_ like an Amos, but boy can he _act_ like one! ☺ Also, note that Star Helix, the company Miller works for, is private security. In other words, Miller & co. are basically rent-a-cops, not actual police. They do happen to be as close as you can find on Ceres, but...

There's no "magic" technology in this show everything is theoretically possible just way beyond todays abilities. There's no fictional gravity like in other shows. it's all either spin gravity on the stations and thrust gravity on the ships. The ships are designed like skyscrapers and when they're accelerating the gravity comes from being 'pushed' into the floor. That's why when the Donnager cut it's engines they started to float. More or less everything in the show that originated from Earth is based on real world physics just a way more advanced version. It's one of the things I love most about this show. Also the 'juice' is a cocktail of drugs and substances that are injected during high G manoeuvres to help people stay conscious and prevent them from dying from a stroke.

Those gatling guns are called PDC's Point Defence Cannons. They're based on the IRL anti-missle defense system Phalanx used in the navy. They try to put a bunch of chunks of metal in the path of an incoming missile, hoping it will collide. The missiles have use onboard PDC avoidance algorithms while the PDC's have trajectory prediction software. Space battles happen at such long distances that lightspeed delay becomes a thing. You can't remotely guide a missile because of the radio signal delay. The Railguns are like battleship cannons, magnetically accelerating a rod of tungsten to hypervelocity. There is no defense for railgun rounds. They go through ships armor like tissue paper. That's what hit Shed. Railgun rounds are unguided, straight line vector weapons, so have a minimum range, again, because of light speed delay. Where you see the enemy ship is not where the ship actually is, it has already moved, but the light hasn't reached you yet. Railguns have to be fired at where you think the ship is going to be, depending on the distance and the lightspeed delay. The shorter the distance, the shorter the delay.

I love both major Martians in this episode so much. Both awesome but flawed. Mao a level-headed, politically conscious, responsible captain, but with the lethal hubris any captain of the Martian flagship would have. Lopez a fanatic but also a (somewhat poetic) dreamer for the future of Mars, who is still capable of recognizing the goodness of Holden and putting his trust in outsiders when all else has failed. I have never seen better last words for any character, especially one developed in only two episodes. We have been LOVING your opening remarks. You are SO right in so many ways, but OFF too. We are watching you...being us...back when we first watched the show. You're doing amazingly. Kudos. We didn't want to tell you about CQB episode. Such a powerful episode. This is the turning point for MOST viewers. If they are not hooked, yet...this isn't the show for them. We really feel that you are NOW invested into these characters...and you have a NEED to know what is actually happening. Don't worry about mixing the names of Alex and Amos. We did the same thing. Like we said, you are making a lot of the same mistakes that we made. You are now part of #TheExpanse family. I said this earlier, my favourite character is James Holden. He and I are a LOT a like (all the pluses and a lot of the minuses). Marie is a Naomi type, incredibly brilliant, but also TOTALLY loyal to her people. Whenever you hear a person in an episode talking about seeing something in the future...you know he's not gong to make it out of the movie/episode. This is a complex story...and we still don't know who the BAD guys are, yet. The plot thickens. Is it Mars? Is it Earth? Is it the OPA? If not them, then who? SO good. The joke about the blood-SHED was too good. We laughed so hard. The Havlock reveal was great, too. So many unexpected twists and turns. This is really a tough show. Space is SO dangerous. So many ways to be killed. Game of Thrones doesn't have ANYTHING on this show...and the seasons get better...all the way to the last episode which is AMAZING. You are on the ride of your life. Hang on. Bizzy Morgue is a Data Broker. I think they said that. Fred Johnson. Oh, so good. There is a backstory..Hang tight. Chrisjen on the roof. So many things happen on that roof...that you will be reminded about for many seasons. So much was said. Naomi's goodbye regret. Lots was meant. Again, wish we could see more than one per week, but we understand...you've got a lot on your plate and Xander on his. Thank you for all that you give us. We are hooked on your reactions. The first book, Leviathan Wakes (ends at S2E05), was written as a noir mystery. Old noir movies/books, set during the 50s/60s time period, often had detectives that wore hats. Miller's hat is in reference to this, to Miller’s way of identifying himself against Belters and with the Earth power structure, and his subconscious dream of rain.....which belters never experience.........and an additional two reasons/links.....that pop up later......later. 😉The actor also had a choice of hats to pick......and he picked that one....which isn't the same style as the one in the book.......but its the one he thought his character would wear.

Thanks for joining my Patreon! And yes, it’s been quite the ride so far. I’m amazed everyone says the season is slow. Because if this is what they consider slow the next couple seasons are going to be bonkers

I was looking forward to this reaction! This episode is when the show kicks into a higher gear and is the point where many reactors fully buy in. The Martians are interesting, as a group they are very, very proud of all of the achievements of Mars. They are super gung ho about the fact that they beat the odds and built a functioning society. They are also very propagandised, with the whole society very invested in working towards the goal of a high tech, Terraformed planet that can act as a garden world. They tend to unconsciously think that Earthers are greedy, destructive, looters and addicts. Mars has always had full employment, and they idea of billions of citizens who will never have a job seems insane to them.. Fred Johnson's interaction with the Mormon leader was absolutely a threat. The Nauvoo represents the first human extra solar expedition, one that intends to colonise unknown environments and be self sufficient for a journey that will take generations. They cannot take chances with a threat of sabotage. The new faction trying to start a war is scary. They may not be very numerous, but their paersonal equipment is high tech enough to draw comment from a Martian Marine, and there ships are good enough to go toe to toe with the MCRN flagship, in long range torpedo strikes, in CQB and even frigging boarding and all but capturing the Donnager. The show just keeps getting more interesting from here!

Came back to watch this after your 5x1 reaction, and the differences in your opinion of the characters and the show in general is just so fantastic. I love how hard that you fell for this show!

@@funnylilgalreacts A lot of people fell off of this show during/after season one. I get it, I really do! You think you know where things are going. But the beautiful thing about this show, is that it doesn't. How simple the issues of season one seem, five seasons (or even two!) along. Amos, the meathead. Miller, the crooked cop. Holden, the idealist. It takes these tired tropes, and not only takes them to their logical conclusion but keeps going. What a story!

Your comment about Yao reminds me of all the small parts in this show who we only see briefly, but are remarkably well conceived and executed. It helped me to pay attention to all characters and not just the main ones. They each have a role to play in the script, and also in exposing more info about where they came from. I am sure you are tired of hearing this, but just take a second to think about how you feel about the main characters, and then if we remember, we can do it again after Season 3, and just contemplate the distance (along multiple axis) that we will have travelled. Hope that I got that tense right.

27:13 The Expanse is pretty good at introducing a concept just to put it out there and get you thinking about it, and then explaining it in more detail as part of the story later. It helps break up exposition-dumps, but I can definitely see how it might be a little jarring.

amos is one of my all time favorite characters. the way he is portrayed in this show is so very much like me its scary. its incredibly rare that i come across a character that does things i 100% agree with and 120% would do also. and this is simply because his portrayal is a very accurate way of showing a person being on the autism spectrum orlike someone who is. autism isnt as simple as most people think and is portrayed in hollywood, its very complex. one of the things he and i have in common is that we need guidance in whats right and wrong, i just have the opportunity to get therapy and professional guidance for this. xD fun fact: i also have a friend like he does that is basically my moral compass and keeps me out of serious trouble, he is great. and even tho he is often annoyed when i do get into trouble he has stuck with me for almost 15 years now. disclaimer: yes, i know amos' backstory is also cause for his personality, obviously, and some people have said that he does not fit the criteria for the clinical diagnosis of autism or asperger. its just not really that easy and clear cut in reality. i was told i had a avoidant personality disorder by one doctor, 6 months later had to take the tests with a different one and was told i was just slightly too far off to really get the label. if i am 2 cents off on having a billion bucks im not a billionaire, but i am rich. not a perfect comparison but it works well enough. just because a diagnosis doesnt fit a person right now doesnt mean thats always gonna be the way.

Yes, this is the episode that hooks people. It is the first of many great episodes. Unexpected deaths (space is harsh). World bulding by showng, not saying. How space combat works by using the Martian flagship. Seeing the world through the other side's eyes and how they too are right. Lopez seemed a scary telepath at first, but at the end he is just another person with a dream.

Miller doesn't want to share information with Octavia because he is afraid that it will put a target on her. He's perfectly comfortable with getting himself killed, he just does not want to put his former partner/lover in the OPA's crosshairs.

If you look back, the piton that went through Havelock's body actually pierced right below the sternum, so missing the heart/lungs (though not necessarily the vena cava, solar plexus, or stomach.

It won't be long before you'll notice that Chrisjen must have the world's biggest closet. Everyone else in this show ranges from shabby all the way up to subdued but Chrisjen always looks like the Queen of Earth.

Grimes and Dookie were killed in the final shootout in the Donnager's docking bay. The death scenes are pretty brief and can be easily overlooked, but it's what it is.

The reason that the first season is a "slow burn" is the showrunners are introducing characters and worldbuilding from the first two novels, blending the stories of James Holden's crew, and what is happening with Miller and Chrisjen Avarsarela into a single narrative stream, which seems a bit slow, unless you love character development and worldbuilding.

She'd comes back next episode. They just put a soccer ball on his neck.... You asked what "scuttle" meant- it's an old naval term for sinking the ship so the enemy can't take it. The ships here are not quite how you'd expect the layout to be- the thrust makes "down" toward the back of the ship, so the layout on the ship they escaped on his like a skinny five story building, with the bridge on top and engine on the "first floor". The "juice" Alex took is to help a body survive rapid or high acceleration without passing out or having a stroke under heavy G. Christian talking about worrying about "people throwing rocks" was literal- any jackhole could strap engines on a big rock and accelerate it towards Earth.

When anyone starts to watch, Miller may look like a dirty cop, then you notice he probably was an idealistic when he joined but after years of frustration became cynical, and when he got tasked with finding Julie he found a cause again.

Been loving your reactions to Expanse so far! I have rewatched it probably 15 or 20 times by now and equal numbers getting through all the books. You are in for a wild ride. One thing I can recommend is to come back and skim through your old reactions to this before each new season. You're already picking up on story threads that pay off soon, some that pay off in a season or two, and some that are series long running threads. Have fun!

So the high speed guns that were firing between ships are called "PDCs" or "Point Defense Cannons". They are likely the futuristic successor to the M61A Vulcan cannon currently used on many modern fixed-wing aircraft including multiple fighter jet models, where the M61A itself was a successor to the Gatling gun/cannon. Just wait until you see one of the rail guns fire... and then realize that there are prototypes of rail gun technology already in existence... Oh and to "scuttle a ship" is naval terminology for deliberately sinking a ship for a number of reasons, including to avoid capture by an enemy force (which was the case here since the MCRN Donnager was both the flagship of the MCRN and was one of the largest ships in existence).

Scuttling the ship means making certain that there is nothing left for the boarders to use as their own.
@Scott_Burton Жыл бұрын
There are several characters who have rich backgrounds, but they will take time for you to learn of them Alex retired (technically I can't actually classify it as retiring, but he served for 20 years and was honorably discharge. Official or not, that's retiring from service) from the Mars Congressional Republic Navy. Bloodshed "It's not the time for that joke." Well, for me it was fine, I saw this episode years ago. But right after it happened, yes, that was a little bit cold. "scuttle" in naval terms means sink the ship so it can't be taken. In this context would mean "self-destruct" likely by overloading the reactor(s) to meltdown, or detonating all ordinance on board. "That ain't no bus"

There's a scene where they pick seats to strap in. In a way, Shed's decision at that moment killed him. Which kinda makes space that more terrifying.
