Notice that Luthen didn't JUST keep them talking until his countermeasures were ready. He also tricked them into increasing power on their tractor beam twice, so that when he ejected all those spikes the tractor beam pulled them in faster causing even more damage.

Mon Mothma being a 'weak liberal' politician is part of her cover story so they can't possibly imagine she's a 'strong radical'. Every time she's brushed aside in congress her cover became stronger. That is what she says she's doing. Makes sense. The show being called Andor is perfect. The fact that we know Andor survives is perfect. The fact that Andor the character gives you very very little of what he's thinking, what his plans or hopes or fears are is perfect. This is a deliberate kind of writing to get you to look more deeply and be patient. "Knowing the stakes" (as you mention for the other characters who might be vulnerable) makes you focus more on what is going to happen rather than who a person is and how they are shaped. People enjoy biographies all the time. Why would they when they know the outcome? Because people are ends in themselves and all the silences, long takes, subtle acting, and ambiguity in Andor (the show) invite us to come to know Andor himself as a real person; An introvert adrift who doesn't know what he's doing but does it anyway until one day he does know. Kill me, or take me in (to the realm of those with stakes to know).

“That music has a dissonance to it…” I’ve listened to that intro to 12 many times, trying to figure out why it hits. It’s genius. You have (what sounds like) two groups of musicians, very rough in their presentation, playing two different sections of the theme. The build to a crescendo, and when it comes together you realize it’s a musical call-to-arms of a people. “And when the day comes, and those two pull together, he will be an unstoppable force for good.”

Little detail that got me: in Episode 11 as Brasso is going through the Andor house, he notices that Maarva cleaned Cassian’s room (which was tossed by Syril and his crew in episode 3) showing that Maarva always expected Cassian to return even though he mostly slept out in the junkyard while on the run during the series. The contrast between Cassian and Syril’s mothers succinctly tells you all you need to know about their respective sides and perspectives on the Universe. Likewise, it informs how they find romantic partners (for Cassian, intimacy is easy; for Syril, intimacy is unsettling and has an element of possessiveness). Just great writing. I wasn’t there when my mother passed and it felt relatable when Cassian (and the audience) wasn’t there for his mother’s passing. We don’t always get a tidy bow on life. People like Kino can come into our life, have a significant influence on us, and we never see them again “I love him more than anything he could ever do wrong” absolutely wrecks me.

I get the same impression, it's Star Wars grown up! This series was made for the circa 1977 audience. It's a more mature Star Wars that we were looking for - something along the lines of the reimagined Battlestar Galactica of 2004.
@rnkelly36
@rnkelly36 Жыл бұрын
Yes. I am a kid from the 1977 Star Wars and honestly SW has been boring to some extent because each new release was for the 5 to 15 age group. That is what Lucas wanted and that is why all the animation is so good because it is made more for that age group. With the sell to Disney the people that came over like Kennedy and Filoni kept that attitude at LucasFilm but started to age it up. That is why you get things like Mandalorian and Kenobi. This was the first venture into a true adult story where good guys and bad guys are not so easy to see as it would be told for a younger audience. This is the like the reimagined BSG but they are telling the dark underbelly of the galaxy. Knowing how rebellions go I expect most of the characters we see to die at some point. The rebellion's objective is not to win but not to loose. Let the Skywalkers fight for the easy seen right and wrong.

@@rnkelly36 I feel like that is by and large true, although more mature storytelling has been included in parts of Clone Wars and Rebels before “modern” Star Wars (everything since Mandalorian Season 1). The line "I love you more than anything you could ever do wrong" is going to stick with me for a very, very long time. I absolutely agree that Maarva and Nemik were the thematic souls of this season, one representing the human need for unconditional love and support, and the other the human need for freedom and political expression in the face of tyranny. One personal and one political, which then met in the middle with Cassian. This has eclipsed Rogue One as my favourite entry in Star Wars, and I cannot wait for season 2. The Cantwell-class Arrestor Cruiser was originally intended to be the actual Imperial Star Destroyer, designed by Colin Cantwell. It was to have weapons much like that of the Death Star. In the end, the concept was reworked into the Death Star, and another design was chosen for the Star Destroyers, obviously. In apocrypha outside of the Star Wars canon, the Cantwell-class has had a limited number of appearances involving vague purposes mostly centering around surveillance or capture of ships. It's been mentioned in canon, and would've made an appearance in Rogue One, but it was cut. This is its first full scene in Star Wars canon. And, I gotta say, even though it gets totally owned by Luthen and his tricks...it was a pretty glorious debut, and the thing was genuinely intimidating when it showed up.

It would seem the show is called Andor because it is a show depicting what created the character we saw as Cassian Andor in Rogue one. The fact that it's his last name rather than his first name underline the fact that this person that took a stand against the Empire is the fruit of his upbringing. It gives credit to Marva and Clem Andor for what they brought to their adopted son and ultimately for what he achieved with the lot of life he was given.

I'm in awe of people that can write a good story.....but this show is on another level. The complex layers created with these characters are beyond fantastic. These last 3 episodes (10, 11 & 12) absolutely floored me with the writing. Luthen and Kino's characters deserve ALL the awards. The writing has taken us through EVERY possible emotion. Hell, even making a droid into a sympathetic character seems like an impossible task (to me, at least).....but Tony Gilroy nailed it. One advantage you gained by holding off on your viewing of the show is that you didn't have to wait that agonizing week-long period between episodes 😁. I love shows that actually spend time in world building. That isn't just cameo's and wide lens views of the world from a tourist perspective but actually inhabit the world as it's lived in. Andor does that for me, we got planets and deep story threads attached to them ... even the empty beaches of Naimos tells a story of what is happening with freedoms in the Galaxy. Even small morsels of Saul saying call it war neatly threads with the "Star Wars" thread ... it's not a rebellion it's a war ... a distinction without any real difference but it still evokes an emotion. Yeah I watched the first 2 episodes, was hooked but realized that I needed to watch it in batches to get that heavy emotional payoff all at once instead of staggard. I got lucky that somehow watched it in the 3 story arc cadence that Tony Gilroy went for ... I actually wish studios would encourage such long format tv shows as it fleshes out so many details. Andor isn't a 12 episode tv show it's more like quadrilogy movie. Lastly Andor I thought was about Cassian but it felt more about the family story of resistance Clem, Marva, Cassian, and the family/ community they built in Ferrix. It had a very family vibe to the whole township.

It's better that they didn't go with "f*ck", because it wouldn't have fit. I've got no problem with profanity in dialogue, even in (ostensibly) kids shows. They hear it every day from their parents and others anyway. The problem in this instance, would've been that it had no precedent, and no real justification. There isn't really any other profanity in the show, so that single word would've just been wildly out of place. Especially for the way Maarva has been presented the entire time so far. It wouldn't be "vulgar" to my mind, but it would be really weird. If that's what they wanted to do, they would've had to establish a bit more potty-mouth in everyone earlier in the season, and maintain a certain consistency of it throughout...without going overboard, obviously. In the end, they made the right call.

He is, hands down, the BEST character in the show, for the amount of time he gets on-screen. Everyone respects him, everyone trusts him, and he never fails to have someone's back. I could watch an entire spin-off show about just Brasso, on the run from the Empire and hopping from world to world doing odd-jobs and helping the locals out of tight jams. Mostly just being wise and genuine and helpful, but sometimes by bashing pirate or Imperial heads. Maybe have the end of that hypothetical show be where he finally joins up with the rebellion not as a soldier, but as the guy in charge of keeping all the maintenance crews organized and working properly.

Agree that Denise is killing it as Dedra, but Luna's role is very much not to be noticed. That's a good spy brewing there. Luthen's antiquities dealer is the act. Mon's dealing with a Senate that's falling apart and just succumbing to the Empire's consolidation. Poor Maarva. I never cried for a droid before but damn they got me with B2 in episode 11. I can see what you mean when you stopped watching Andor early on and for me it was like that with Game of Thrones and The Expanse. My mind wasn't ready to delve into a prolonged story and world building. When I heard the music for episode 12 I was like it sounded like a high school band. After watching the procession start, I was like, "Oh, that's brilliant!" Chef's kiss is what I felt as well with Mon's ploy with Perrin's gambling. Everything about this series banged. I thought that Maarva may have still been alive as a ploy in episode 11 since we didn't see the body. But then the hologram and speech was incredible. In my head canon Dedra and Syril totally did it in that storage room. The sexual tension was palpable. Mosk is the friend that Syril didn't deserve because Mosk did stuff for him that Syril never really reciprocated. Ferrix was not a win for the Rebellion but something that causes it to grow like Luthen said. "That's the plan". Luthen's little smile there told us all we needed as Luthen has wanted Andor from the start. Luthen thought that he could talk Andor into joining but Andor said it's just better to live and lay low, but Luthen still needed the job done so he turned to the tactic to using him for the job and disposing of him if he didn't die or join after it. The sister thing is just something I hope they never mention again. There's no way they could make that pay off because they just didn't build that up enough for it to matter in the present. How do you explain that she's still alive? Why didn't they go back to get the kids or check for survivors sooner? Cassian seemed quite happy with Clem and Maarva so why does he have this yearning to be reunited with someone he hasn't seen for 20 years? Did he ever got back to Kenari? etc... Vel is interesting to me because I'm not sure that she believes in the Rebellion fully. She feels like she's still pretending and playing rebel looking for something. Great breakdown of Karn. You're spot on. You can take any piece of media and pick a little piece that works, nothing wrong with that, but it doesn't mean that they work well as a whole. I still feel they fall on their face with the sequels. As a creator and storyteller, they were incredibly frustrating. As far as Andor goes. We're seeing what the effect of one person has on the people around them. Andor is involved in sparking so many things that will help build the Rebellion. Maybe Andor is Star Wars "Hamilton". What I do feel is that SW does owe it to the dedicated fans to have excellent writing, acting, and production, because if the owners don't feel that have to put that much into it to keep people coming back, they're wrong. This show is what we deserve, IMO. I would love to see a post ROTJ series on building the New Republic, freeing systems, and bringing war criminals to justice, in this style.

This whole series is pretty much about sacrifice, even thought personal sacrifice seems insignificant when compared to massive oppressive apparatus of Empire, it all adds up. Every person's sacrifice was a necessary link of long chain of events needed to pull down the Empire from from its foundations. I love this series so much

The things most appreciated sometimes require a little work, some patience, time to develop, and faith that it will all come together. This slow burning, world-building, story about a man, and the revolution that would change him, and the galaxy, was all of that and so much more. I look forward to your future reactions when the second, and final, season eventually arrives.

I love watching the beginning of Mon Mothma. Genevieve O'Reilly does a perfect job of portraying someone trying to work from ideals, watching reality dash those ideals, and knowing that she's walked down a one way path and never knowing if she was up for taking all this risk to herself and family.

"Tell him I love him more than anything he could ever do wrong" That line hits me harder than anything in any media, 1. because it's just a phenomenal line and 2. Personal history. F*ck me but they should've given Tony Gilroy a Goddamn Emmy award just for that one line.

I really like the little bit of Saw we get in this episode. The writing and Whittaker's performance does a lot to really flesh out what could have been just another tense scene. We know that Saw personally doesn't like Kreegyr because he's both not very strategic and was a Separatist. However him being aghast that Luthen was willing to just let him walk into a trap I think speaks to some lines even he's iffy on crossing. The little smile he gives when Luthen pulls a gun is very "game recognizes game". In a larger sense its also Saw sort of finally realizing how tenuous his position in the nascent Rebel Alliance is. He knows he's not popular and people like Mon Mothma actively dislike him. Were it not for his relationship with Luthen, he could have been Kreegyr and that's what shocks him.

That Maarva literally becomes the first brick thrown in the uprising, as her final recording narrates it, and Luthen watches realizing that for all his orchestrations and manipulations the uprising had nothing to do with him because he's watching it from the sidelines as it happens entirely organically by the people - just chef's kiss. A subtle thing the show writing does is show the audience how often we misunderstand character motivations until we know more. When we saw Kino struggling in his cell with fear we thought it was a character finding his will to fight for life... but it's not until the end of that last episode that we realize he knew from the start it meant death for him. His dark night of the soul moment there was simply him coming to grips with it and finding his courage to give his life for it so every other inmate in the prison could live. It makes it such a selfless and more meaningful thing with such a little twist. The way we see the different characters find their voices is impeccable.

I forgot where I saw it, but someone said that this show isn’t about what would make Cassian willing to kill for the Rebellion. It’s about what would make him willing to die for it. And I thought that summed it up so perfectly.

I am obsessed with the water motif for Andor in this show. When he's jumped by the cops in the first ep, when it shorts out the prison floor, when he listens to the manifesto it's raining. And the manifesto "tyrrany LEAKS", "FLOOD the banks", etc.

these last 2 episodes of Andor are up there with some of the better Star Wars media. Moments like Saw and Luthen coming to and understanding. Like Luthen leaving that schmuck Imperial standing on the bridge wondering how a space Toyota Corolla just cost him the lives of boarding party, pilots, and weeks in dry dock to repair the tractor beam emitter. The parade up Rix road. Marva's last words for Cassian. Bix saying "Marva was here" and Cassian responding "Wasnt she great?" All tremendous.

When Fiona did the whole speech she apparently didn't say "fight" the Empire. Knowing her of old, I can well believe that of her. The producers decided to play it safe and overdub the word she actually used. I feel that in the long run, Dedra is unlikely to show gratitude towards Karn.

Kino, Luthen, Nemik, Maarva. Some of the monologues in this show have been the height of anything in media, let alone Star Wars. And the writing and dialogue overall, hard to say there's much that's ever been better. Also...Cass went home with three traps waiting to be sprung on him...and not only did he get away clean after achieving all of his objectives...the people hunting for him didn't even SEE him. Luthen only encountered him because Cass explicitly sought him out at the end. Badass.

Once again I'm so glad you decided to finish reacting to Andor. On one of the points you mentioned about Monica Mothma (from Brooklyn😁) not having a commanding speech in the senate. I think during that particular speech the other senators were all not paying attention and leaving because everyone was concerned with the news of the heist at Ahldani that had just happened the night before. Thumbs up given👍🏽for this reaction.

I'm so happy that this show was a mature, well-written political (spy) thriller. It knew what it wanted to be and wanted to do and did that really well. It's something Star Wars in my opinion desparately needed. However, I would never argue that all Star Wars should be like this. There can (and should) be room for multiple target audiences in Star Wars.

Keep in mind that the series will end immediately before the events of Rogue One, and we know certain things have to happen between now and then. Obviously, one of those things is K2-SO. You mentioned at some point about Mon Mothma's presence in the Senate. We know from Rebels that she gave a speech denouncing the Emperor before fleeing from Coruscant with Admiral Thrawn in hot pursuit and she was rescued by the crew of the Ghost. We've already seen this in Rebels but not everyone has seen it and it's a HUGE backstory-crossover for Ahsoka and the Thrawn movie. There's also the matter of Saw's physical condition, and Mon Mothma's attitude towards him, in Rogue One. Something big happened to him and they put too much effort in to not show us what it was. Considering he's already exhibiting paranoia towards him, it's not too hard to imagine how a mission gone wrong could lead Saw to blame Luthen. If an injured, bitter, paranoid, Saw were to kill Luthen for 'trapping' him, that would tie up a lot of bows. It should also be remembered that, in Rebels, Saw was the one who first started getting clues about the Death Star, so that's something else we're likely to see. Mon Mothma's speech has to happen. Not just because of the backstory but because it's the natural climax of her character arc, the moment the Rebellion really started. I don't think this will be the series finale, though. One way or another, Saw's injuries and K2-SO also have to happen. Given K2 and Cassian seem to have known each other for a while in Rogue One, it's probable that we'll get him in the first or second arc. They could wrap all of these things up by mid-season and end the series with two full-on rebellion arcs.

Marva's death is very well done, many people would have liked to have seen her final moments, but we start the episode with her already gone, and it's a gut punch to realise what happened, we feel robbed because we feel we should have been there. And that's exactly how Cassien feels when he finds out. He is devasted and feels he should have been there. The show puts us right in his mindset without having to do it overtly. Also, I'm glad you picked up Mon's plot to frame her husband as taking the money for gambling, I saw a few people who didn't pick up on it, but they laid the groundwork for her plan. Mentioning her driver was a ISB mole, the gangster guy mentioning having dealings with her husband, and so on. All these little signs that allow Mon to easily try and shift the blame onto him to cover her own tracks. Considering how she is usually portrayed, it is nice to see some cutthroat pragmatism from her.

Great reactions to a great show - thank you! So happy you came back - and came around - to this show. One of the best series of last year, hands down. I love how the show respects its audience and its characters. When Mon is framing her husband, there could easily have been an exposition scene of her saying that she’s going to, but no. We get it. We know what she’s doing. We don’t think it’s suddenly a new plot thread. Or the way the snitch doesn’t just inelegantly pump Andor’s friend for information but uses reverse psychology instead - and we leave the scene without seeing it work. But again: we get it. I know it’s not super subtle, but this is the universe that couldn’t stop explaining so much that it gave us midichlorians. And yet, it’s awfully direct when it comes to politics. We have a martyr, Nemek, reading his rebel manifesto, for crying out loud! It’s so nice to see this inverted Star Wars, where the politics are front and center, instead of willfully ignored, while the plot and characters have depth beyond good space wizard, bad space wizard. I also love how Luthen is just duplicitous by default. There are 50 men with Kreegor, but even as he’s telling Saw everything else, he still says it’s 30 men, not 50. Perhaps it’s even more, as the ISB is “still counting the bodies”. Poor Lonni if it turns out it’s even worse than Luthen said. As for Karn, sure, he wants a job. But he also really wants to simp for Dedra. And that’s putting it mildly. Sigmund Freud would have a field day with this guy: Raised by a domineering mother who belittles him constantly, and now he’s attracted to the Empire’s fascistic strictness, and its personification in Dedra. He wants to be a knight in shining armor (with custom-tailored piping), but - to be blunt -he also really wants this valkyrie to trample him. Speaking of Dedra, Gough said in an interview that she at first played her more animated, with big arm movements and such, but the director said it made her less menacing. So instead she stands ramrod straight, jaw clenched, and only straightens and clenches more when she gets angry. Great actor, great directing. I do agree that Diego Luna doesn’t display a lot of range in this, but that’s not a criticism, as Andor is really mostly a cipher. Plot happens _to_ him. He’s not the center of the universe, he’s not a Great Man of History-type. But he’s clever (“power doesn’t panic”), and a great lens through which to see the story unfold. And he’s the least easily-radicalized of everyone - took all season. And I thought he did a good job as both the fired-up organizer of a prison break, and the son far away from home shellshocked at the news of Maarva’s passing. And that hug between him and Brasso felt real. I could keep going (Ferrix funeral rites! Maarva’s message! B2! Brasso!) but it’s just a great show.

Swear that cane of Luthan's looks like a light saber handle. Coupled with the kyber crystal, I can't help but wonder if he's a former Jedi who has cut himself off from the force like others in hiding. A little detail I loved was the explosion debris still floating in high orbit. Just another small improvement to the details. The writing and dialogue of this series is just outstanding. And it has a cast that can deliver it to perfection. 12 made me a mess 4 times. The manifesto, Marva's message to Cassian, Bix listening to the music... omg that hurt, and Marva's speech.

Somebody may have already pointed it out in the comments, but IF not: The Cantwell-class Arrestor Cruiser that Luthen runs into is (if I'm remembering correctly) a very early design for the original Star Destroyer back when they were coming up with ship design ideas for the original trilogy. I LOVE it when Star Wars takes old ideas and repurposes them like this. It's very cool. An Arrestor may have also made an appearance in Rebels (maybe. It's been a while since I watched Rebels)

A little bit of historical trivia related to Luthien's actions. During ww2, Churchill had people who had broken the German codes, from which they knew a small city (thought it was called Coventry, but apparently I'm mistaken) was about to be bombed. I think they went with a name title with Andor because that's the trend nowadays. With comic book superhero movies, it's always just the name of the character and that's something Star Wars has adopted (e.g. Mandalorian, Obi Wan, Book of Boba Fett, soon to be Ahsoka). I think another reason they just went with Andor is because if they were going to use an alternate title, unfortunately that title had already been used for another show: Rebels. If this show was named Rebels, it would've been far more fitting and reflective of the show and probably communicate to the audiences better the expectations of the show. But that title was already taken and probably anything else would've sounded too forced or cheesy (which fits for the mainline Flash Gordon inspired films ala Attack of the Clones, but it wouldn't fit for a show with Andor's tone), so they just went with Andor.

I really wish Lucasfilm and Disney would take Star Wars this seriously more often. It's telling that it took someone, Tony and Dan Gilroy, who's aren't even Star Wars fans to finally get Star Wars right. And not even just Star Wars, but filmmaking in general. There's more emotion, purpose, and weight in these 12 episodes than Star Wars has had as a whole since 1987. Even George himself lost his way, so its not solely Disney's fault.
