The reasons why Furiosa didn't do so well is because: 1. The movie took too long to come out. The last one came out way back in 2015. That's almost TEN years ago. The hype for MM is gone. 2. It's not about Mad Max. People wanted to see a sequel about him. Not a prequel about another character. As good as the movie is It was still a mistake. 3. Mad Max isn't that type of blockbuster that smashes at the box office and the studio knows that. That's why it took so long for this one to get off the ground because they weren't confident enough in the franchise's potential.

The data doesn’t show otherwise. lol you do realize the median income for a household is like 70 k? Average rent is over 2300 k? How to do you square that circle? People are spending money on food, cars and shelter not vacations or movies or whatever people in your upper income bracket are spending money on John, they are not going on weekly jaunts to Vegas or streaming from their inground pool in the Hollywood hills. They are working multiple jobs living in many cases ( not my case ) in a one bedroom apartment. Yes - 'discretionary spending is up' - but people don't have the money in cases to go to the movies. Discretionary includes clothing, household goods, personal care, education, internet and data, recreation and entertainment, leisure travel, restaurants, electronics, and home furnishings. And guess what - the prices on most of that are up, and things like clothing, education, in this day and age internet - more important than seeing a movie. It's not like people are blowing money having fun and if they are it's likely on one bigger thing than seeing a movie or it's one movie. This is why you can't just look at a chart and go 'but it says' because it needs more context - one of us is right, but without a further breakdown of where discretionary spending is going, and even then where it goes on recreation and entertainment can't see if it's going there at all or if it's all dumped in to education and clothes. I haven't seen a movie in theaters in years - wanna know why? Because just to get in to an off hours screening of Furiosa or any other movie in the basic, 2D format that's been around for over 100 years will cost me near 20 dollars. And that is before I factor in any form of transportation to get to and from the theater, and god help me if I want a drink let alone a snack. The last time my family went to a movie in the theaters was I think 2015 (can't remember if Force Awakens was the last thing we managed to see in one), and we actually had a meal at a restaurant near the theatre - which was cheaper than the 4 tickets, 3 drinks, and a couple snacks we split. Average domestic ticket price is 25% higher than it was then so the four of us going to see a movie is likely about 110-150 dollar investment - when we can buy that movie and 4+ more new ones on DVD, Blu-Ray or whatever when they come out. Oh - and that price is assuming we can even *FIND* a traditional 2D screening, cause the theatres in the area have been trying to get rid of them and force people to book 3D, IMAX, and all the other insane stuff that costs more to a point just the damn tickets at the cheapest times would be anywhere from 100-150 dollars for all of us, forget about snacks or drinks.
@arlopear7136

Rising prices in the overall economy have never solely been the reason people don't go pay to see movies they truly want to see. However you combine that along with the fact that theatrical releases will be on streaming & capable to be watched at home a lot sooner than movies used to be available to watch at home & that's lethal combination for a lot of movies in general.

Women lead action films (Kill Bill films, Aliens) tend to make $22-25 million opening weekend. Plus, Hemsworth only adds to films when he’s Thor. That’s a nice chart John, but it’s missing important data such as demographics and class. The divide between the class is still growing. That means the spending isn’t in the hands of the average movie goer. There is also a lot of news articles now about Recession spending, that even with the data saying people are making more the feeling of being in a recession is still there. Add that to streaming squeezing harder and harder for the services at home (regardless of your beliefs in the benefits vs expense calculus) and you get less money going to the movies with exceptions like huge experience spectacles like Deadpool and Wolverine.

Why do we keep blaming the movie for the performances? Its simple, people are not going to the movies anymore because it is too expensive!! The movies used to be a casual thing that people would do with their date or families a couple of weekends out of a month. Now its too expensive to just casually attend a movie. A movie needs to be an event now to get people out in bunches. P.s. i don't care what some "data" says, we are real people around other real people and this is how real people are feeling.

Then toss in the fact that a lot of the big tent pole movies in last couple years like Black Adam, Quantimania, all sony marvel movies except Spiderverse, have been really really bad. I can think of two other reasons why the movie didn’t do as well as we thought. 1) They waited too long for this movie. Fury Road came out in 2015. I think it’s absurd that George Miller decided to wait until now for another film in this franchise and it’s a prequel. I know part of that had to do with that lawsuit against Warner Bros but they still took too much time. 2) I know he wanted to make this Furiosa movie for a while but I almost think it’s kind of unnecessary. One could make the argument that Fury Road already was a Furiosa film. Even though it has Tom Hardy as Max, Furiosa stole the movie so one could watch Fury Road and think it’s a Furiosa film. Plus, I feel Fury Road already told us the most important details of Furiosa’s story in a way that it makes a prequel redundant. After all, what could a Furiosa prequel film tells us that Fury Road already did?

Another thing hurting box office for anything these days really, besides Furiosa, is the shortened theatrical window. What I don’t get is why the theaters aren't doing something about it. After all, studios know that if movie theaters die, then streaming services and PVOD also die. Theaters know that as well. That's why I think one thing that needs to happen, especially when films like Spider-Man: No Way Home, Top Gun: Maverick, Jurassic World: Dominion, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and Barbie proving that films can still be billion dollar hits IF STUDIOS WOULD BOTHER TO LET THEM PLAY WITH LONGER THEATRICAL WINDOWS, then why NATO (National Association of Theater Owners) and all the theater chains that make up NATO don’t collectively put their foot down and give the studios an ultimatum: extend the theatrical window back to six months to a year or we will refuse to screen your film slate. As in, NATO has the chance to grab the studios' collective balls in a vicegrip if they do that. NATO needs to buck up, grow a pair, and demand the studios knock off that three or four weeks in theaters and then on PVOD and streaming services crap. That would help a major way in terms of box office recovery, doesn't mean it will magically make every film a billion dollar box office hit, but it will help more films perform better. Also, bring back physical media and movie rental store chains like Blockbuster Video. Seriously, with streaming and PVOD struggling, if I had the capital to, I would invest in Blockbuster Video into helping them start opening new locations again, outside of the last one currently in Bend, Oregon. Like, wouldn't that be a hilarious ironic comeback, especially after the stupid shit that the Netflix founder keeps saying and doing?

People aren’t going to the movie theaters because it’s too expensive, because movie studios spend so much money on budgets for their movies they do not net a good enough return so they charge movie theaters more. Films like Everything, Everywhere, All At Once and Godzilla Minus One proved that you can have movies with truly top tier visual effects and practical sets. Now Hollywood needs to adopt that model. Or else theaters truly will become endangered.

For me A Mad Max movie without Mad Max is like watching a Robin movie. Nobody really wants that they all want to see Batman. For me personally I feel like this movie would have done a lot better not being attached to Mad Max. It should have been its own new IP and then people would have said this is what Mad Max should have been. That would have given it a different narrative. Also Mad Max franchise is not as popular as people think. The industry has a budget problem the last movie made $380 million and this one was budgeted for $168 million. That’s a budget problem.

I see your point but as for your example... I mean, I would definitely watch a Robin movie as long as it's a seasoned one and not an origin story, it could be an interesting look in the b tier characters overshadowed in the universe. And no, doesn't need to be a Nightwing movie. Even better it could be the codename for he actually building up the Teen Titans by the end of the movie. I mean, if they go that route, they could definitely do a single Robin movie just for that, a view of this side of the universe with the bonus of building up a Teen Titans future movie. If it's Damian Wayne they can also make a Super Sons movie with Johnathan Kent
