Here is my footage of The Furka Pass Cogwheel Mountain Steam Railway in Switzerland. First we see the loco DFB 1 simmering at Oberwald waiting for its13.55pm departure on Monday 25th July 2011. Then we see the train climbing out of Oberwald on the rack system, entering the spiral Kehrtunnel and then arriving at Gletsch. Finally we see the loco working hard climbing up to the summit of Furka. It was a most enjoyable days filming in stunning scenery and I hope you enjoy watching half as much as I did filming.

Thank you indeed for the film sharing. This magnificent view of the locomotive and its previous history in Vietnam used to be part of my life many years ago.

Not only a fantastic video, it also goes to show how much less invasive a railway is, when compared to a relatively narrow road.

Video was put together really well, especially some of those shots, beautiful video, beautiful loco & excellent scenery! Always nice to hear a steam loco working hard, although not a fan of her whistle. In Tasmania here in Australia, we have a rack railway. It uses the same rack system, ABT to climb the steep 1 in 12 grades between Queenstown and Regatta Point (Strahn), under the name West Coast Wilderness Railway. Beautiful little 0-4-2 tank locos work this line. I have a couple of videos up now if your interested.

There is a great article in Trains Magazine May 2013. The article goes into discussion about this railroad and the history behind this beautiful railroad. The view of this railroad and the backdrop must have been breathe taking.

Very skillfull filmed, would do in any profesional production. Like they fact that the railway goes straight up there where the road needs serpentines, shows how steep the rack section is. Last time on the Furka pass is almost 20 years back now, when we have been climbing some mountains there, but now the railway is finished I need to go back and do a trip.

I travelled on this line in 2009. Back then, the final section between Oberwald and Gletsch was not yet finished. Really a fantastic effort, to think it is only in existence thanks to a few visionaries and the toil of volunteer workers! I do like the way they sprinkle the forest to prevent potential fires. You will notice that the train slows down to cross the road. this is because there is no rack on the level crossing. The pinion disengages just before and resumes opertion just after the crossing. You can even hear it grab on to the rack.

What's the gradient on that track? And why is the rack gear not moving?

its 11%, its a combined loco, the rack gear is underneath the boiler where you couldn't see it from this distance

What a stunning last shot. Brilliant!! Unusual to have a cog rly where the loco is pulling instead of pushing. Why did they have the sprinklers on that far up the mountain? Great stuff......Tim.

Sprinklers are to avoid wild fires in the pine trees down there. They work automatically and will switch off once the train arrives
