Carrier Furnace Error Code 31 - Pressure Switch Furnace Issues [RESOLVED]. In this video, I was able to resolve my issue related to code 31 on a Carrier furnace.

some of these air switches has two contact - one on the front one on the back check both! On my Carrier unit the yellow jumper powered both switches - then there was a brown (signal to control board) and orange (signal to control board) two different outputs signals. Inducer housing pressure and collector box pressure (check all 3 tubing- green, black, and black square tubing vacuumed sensing signal). Blow them out (toward the inducer housing) and you can check them with a OHM meter by gently sucking on the hose and hearing them click. Make sure the hoses are good and tight - a very small vacuum leak can cause them to not work!

Kudos! 11:30 pm eastern here in Indiana and wife came in my office to ask me why our furnace was set at 72 but was registering 68 and dropping. Dumb-founded, I took off the cover and wasn't sure where to start! So, I got the model number and started my search... one thing lead to another and learned how to read the code using the light blinks and stumbled onto your video. I skipped everything up to what your issue was and couldn't blow through the top hose... so using my air compressor set to low pressure... tried with it and hoped I wouldn't damage it or blow the backside of the hose off or put a hole in the tubing... IT Worked! Dislodged something that was blocking it and now it works normally again. Thank you very much for taking the time to make your video!!! Again... Kudos to you!!!

Just wanted to give you a huge thank you for this video. I too woke up to a freezing cold house and the same error 31 code. After watching your video I discovered that all of my trap lines, and pressure tubing was clogged with ice. We’ve had a really bad cold snap and the Carrier is in the attic. I’ll have to work on some better insulation down the road a bit. Anyway you saved me hundreds of dollars. I’m very appreciative.

Hey man after 4hrs of working on my furnace with no luck I came across your video and found those hoses and blew on them and one was clogged. Got it unclogged and furnace fired right up after. Thanks alot saved me money was about to give up.

I just had a similar problem. Knew it couldn't be the air filter because it was only six months old. Checked everything else, decided to check air filter anyway, AIR FILTER HAD COLLAPSED! Hardly dirty, but collapsed from the pressure differential. THIS is what a cheap filter gets you. Put new one in, no problems.

One of the hoses that goes into the condensation box was full of water. Took off the box and ran some hot water through it to clear all the black slime out. Furnace running good again. 👍

The hose from the inducer is always the first culprit. It gets worn and soft over the years. I replaced that and solved the problem.

You will damage the pressure switch by blowing into the tube and make it open and close like that use an ohm meter to be safe and check resistance.

What should the resistance be? Currently troubleshooting this fault code 31. Seems to only happen when it’s below 10 degrees out go figure.

If your trap was full of rust, your secondary is rotten. Call your dealer to have it checked and replace. Very common Carrier problem. This will also cause pressure switch problems.

What do you mean by the “secondary”? I had zero water drain out, trap was clogged full of junk. Blew on all the tubes, confirmed nothing trapped in the flew. Am I out of luck and just need to replace the switch?

I mean the secondary heat exchanger coating peals do to the acid in the condensate. That causes the trap to get clogged with the coating material. Carrier cheeped out when they designed the furnace and used a galvanized steal and put a coating on it for it not to rust in lieu of using a stainless like every other manufacture. It's simple to check. Disconnect the corrugated drain line from the extension going to the trap. This is the drain line coming from the bottom of the collector box. You need to look through the straight end, not the end with the 90 that connects to the collector box. Look into the lines corrugations. If you see a bunch of brown crap, that's you secondary rusting. There should be only clear water coming down that line. If you are in the states I think there is a class action lawsuit for this problem. If you're Canada, you're out of luck because Carrier will only pay out 350 some odd dollars for the replacement of the heat exchanger but this job is usually way more expensive then 350$. We charge 1699$ flat rate for heat exchanger repairs. We price it high to discourage customers to having it done. It's usually best advise to replace the furnace when it needs a heat exchanger as by that time they are normally over 10 years old. We all live in a disposable society. Company's don't make any money making stuff that lasts for ever. @@amandalawless2530
