I have taken many people up to the point where they export to DXF though, and CAD is a great tool to get the most out of your machines. You can design parts for assembly and you can produce the drawings for welded assemblies and whatever else you can imagine. Keep going!

Hi Arnold, found these series as I was looking to get into 3D design for parts for my RC model submarines, now at tutorial 6 of 16 and getting the hang of it. As I already own a filament 3D printer and my Resin printer is on it's way, I am really looking forward to designing more of my own parts. Until now I used ThinkerCad, but this takes way more time to design parts.Thanks for your time !

Thanks for the feedback Robbert. RC submarines! Wow, that's an interesting one. I just bought a 3D printer myself and I've got some ideas for content later in 2021. It would be great to keep in touch. And that's interesting about TinkerCad from a user who's tried both now. I've been thinking of checking it out when I've got some time.

The other way is to navigate to the first one, here is the link. kzbin.info/www/bejne/goS1fH2dibiGasU I’m currently revising them one by one but its a slow process and I’m working on the revised number six currently. Can you perhaps go into more depth on the "Driven Dimension" error I keep getting? Youo mentioned just delete it but why does it happen?
@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360
@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 2 жыл бұрын
Sure! As you know there are dimensional constraints and geometric constraints. The dimensional ones are easily visible when you have a sketch open, the geometric ones leave a small grey icon on sketch entities (lines, arcs) which, now that you know about them, you can begin to recognise the different kinds. Trying to place a dimensional constraint where there is already a geometric constraint can cause the conflict and these will become easier to spot with experience. Next time you're in a sketch, choose the Select Tool and experiment with selecting and deleting geometric constraints. Then add some; different ones. You can take charge of them. To add to the confusion, some geometric constraints are added automatically while drawing. You'll find this annoying while you're learning but later you will be glad of it, its like riding a bicycle with a wind behind you. I recommend that you try not to loose sleep over this but keep your eyes open while you work through these low-consequence tutorials. Usually the worst thing that can happen with an under-constrained sketch is that something else can push it out of shape. When you're working on something like a manned quad-copter vehicle you need to be really on the ball. Hopefully that's a bit down the track.

Hi Arnold, working my way through the turorials. You always center and contrain the drawing to the origin? Why ? Thanks
@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360
@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 Жыл бұрын
Good question RB, it helps in several ways. First, you can use the three planes in your strategy for completing the modelling of the part you’re working on. Soon, you’ll look at a part you need to model and you’ll be thinking about how best to make use of the three planes in order to make your task easier and you’ll develop a way of working. Often it will involve getting the point of origin where symmetry helps, sometimes where there is an advantage in the broader assembly.Those things might be a way off in the future for now but good habits will save you from correcting bad ones later. These are the things that apply to most other CAD programs and will stand you in good stead.

Hi Arnold. Thank you for these videos which I'm enjoying greatly! On a detail, you have me confused with your constraints of 30mm and 50mm to the origin (video 5:56) since the origin is not mentioned on the drawing set I just downloaded? The funny thing is that I have been testing my knowledge by working from the drawing in Fusion 360 before watching the video as I get more learning from doing it this way - and this is when I realised that the drawing does not constrain the 'x' dimension of the slot. Now that I watch the video I'm guessing that the video and drawing may have got out of step along the line? Many thanks Bob

On your drawings, you show the right side view with dashed lines for the (hidden) holes. How did you show that?
@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360
@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 3 жыл бұрын
Good question Peter, I'm glad you asked. I've done a preliminary video on the basics of producing drawings in Fusion 360 here; kzbin.info/www/bejne/aHqup6aQhslsb6s The beauty of 3D CAD programs like Fusion 360 is that the 2D drawings they create are semi-automatic. That is that the outlines and hidden lines are done for you when to tell it what views you want and where you want to place them on a page. These engineering drawings are vital to the communication between a designer and his manufacturer or tradesman, even more important when the manufacturer is not 'in-house'. I'll be doing a lot more on this, its not a spectacular subject for videos on KZbin and so I'll do some more of the basic functions of the drawing creation environment but I'm thinking that for the details and traditions of the discipline I'm going to offer a course which costs $50 and cover it in exhaustive detail. I'd be pleased to get your feedback on this idea.
@peterlindner3283
@peterlindner3283 3 жыл бұрын
@@ArnoldRowntreeTeachesFusion360 Thank you for your response AND for the video mentioned in it. The drawings are semi-automatic (as you say), but I had to stop the video several times to see the magic places that the cursor goes to bring up the menu. As for a $50 class, the price point may need to be established, but I'm certainly interested. ($50 is a little high, zero would be ideal, but $5-$10 would certainly be reasonable -- for me at this point in my life.)

Rich, you can do it either way. You can experiment with this to confirm. Make two random circles in a sketch, put a dimensional constraint on one of them, then use the Equal constraint one way, click undo and do it by selecting the other one first. Then double click on the dimensional constrain and alter it. Then do it all again and don't use the dimensional constraint until the very end.

Hi Arnold I am enjoying working through the tutorials, and learning how to use Fusion 360. In Part 6 (and several of the exercises that follow) you start the tutorial by right clicking the mouse and selecting Sketch, and then another set of commands appear. I am having trouble with this, as the right click works, but the list of additional commands in the tool windows do not show. (instead I see a wheel of only 7 or 8 options) Is this a version difference, or is there a setting I need to change to enable this? Thanks again for the great tutorials.

Don't give up Guy, you're making progress if you're up to part 6 now. That right click tool is handy but everything on there is available in the menus above so they aren't crucial. Sure, they are handy but you won't miss out, give yourself time and you'll have the right click functions well and truly nailed. Spend some time just mousing around and exploring, the right click has some context sensitive options, depending on where you currently are and some of the menu items (the ones with a little black triangle) below the carousel have flyouts which activate when you mouse over them.

So I decided to start over, but then I could not get the constraint tools to work at all :(. Also, I have not figured out how to hide the grid lines even though I clicked the tab. Douglas, my heart goes out to you. I wish I could be there, I've seen people in my classroom with the very same frustrations over and over again. Its so easy to help with but so hard to explain each one of them at a distance. You can delete constraints once you select them, you should be quite relaxed about restarting a tutorial from the start, put each try down to practice. Keep an eye on when the warning appears and check the procedure in the video. Did you use the little grid icon in the toolbar at the bottom in the middle? Click the grid icon and in the little pop up menu tick or untick Layout Grid. Yes?

Hello Arnold, thanks for the videos... I'm looking for a laptop to begin learning 360, been recommended MSI but don't know which model or specs. I live in Tenerife so have to buy online, any advice would be much appreciated

Hi Mitten 81, I prefer a desktop for CAD since its cheaper to get the specs that make for a good workstation. A laptop can be OK for learning on but as soon as you start doing real projects with lots of parts its going to feel pretty clunky. As I understand it, the most important thing is the RAM, (4Gb is the barest minimum, 8 is much better), then the graphics card, (most laptops don't have dedicated graphics) Then the HDD, faster is better, (a SSD is best) and then finally the CPU (an I5 is enough these days). I hope this helps.

F360, for the most part, isn't multi-threaded. So for CPU specs, clock speed is more important than number of cores. You might look at the HP Z2 workstations for under $1500, designed for CAD and rendering.

As of 11/2020, I'm not finding a 'Slot' selection. Was that re-named? THANKS!

Hi Alan, I can think of a few names when I'm frustrated. I've got it too, "old timers" disease.

Andy, I give away the PDF to those who want to learn Fusion 360 from me, and most people are interested in the newsletter which I send to subscribers. In every issue I say unsubscribe if you don't want this, and its quite OK to unsubscribe immediately when you've got the free download. The unsubscribe button is right there, its much easier to unsubscribe than to get on the list which has a double opt-in, so just one click and its a memory. I'll tell you a secret Andy, I wouldn't do this at all unless I had a plan to earn money from it somehow. I make a lot of free content, eventually there will be other content that costs money.

Anvesh, the Colinear Constraint gets the two shoulder lines to be lined up nicely, or if its the centre of the arc on the point of origin it was the Coincident constraint for that one.
