This is one of those episodes that shows Fry's potential. He's a dumbass and screws things up all over the place, but you'll notice a theme throughout the series. Fry is capable of some very impressive feats and actions whenever Leela is involved or at stake. When he is doings something to help or save her is when he truly shines.
