I'm in my early 20s and was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder Level 1 (Aspergers) a few weeks ago. I always felt I was different because I didn't want to do lots of things other people did, and I much prefer being by myself. I have social issues, I get very anxious around groups of people and don't understand jokes and sarcasm. I have a very good memory and have a really hard time waiting to do things. That's a few things among quite a list haha.

I have a daughter with high functioning nvld. My wife and I have given our heart and soul to raising her. She is loved by everyone she meets and tries hard at everything she does and strives to be. She has gone thru many nightmares. This was the first. I got called by one school the same day she started. When I got to the classroom, the teacher was pointing at my daughter stating to the class, "this is an example of how not to act." I looked over at her. She had barricaded herself in a corner with chairs and a desk crying with tears all over her face. This is one example of what she has been thru. When I saw the channel Fathering Autism I was happy to find someone in the same boat. I was anxious to see their daily interactions. What I found was a father solicitating her daughters disability for money. Its sickening. I hope one day she realizes what he has done and smashes his phone.

This was wonderful. I think you answered every question I had and more. I've really learned so much about what autism means to someone like Abbie. Have any of you seen the show the undateables? It's the sweetest show based in the UK about people with disabilities looking for love. There are people with autism often on the show and they are all so different from each other but equally as interesting, smart, sweet and witty. It's a great look into a world of what autism means for people that are higher functioning. Anyway, thank you for taking the time to educate the world, while at the same time making us laugh and fall in love with you. Love from edmonton, Alberta 😘

You guys are so young! I have Aspergers. To me the main problems are difficulties with processing all of the information that you get at once, including sensory sensitives ; executive functioning problems - difficulty figuring out the steps to do something, difficulty performing the steps - getting stuck in a loop happens; having a need to focus deeply on something - we don’t do multi-tasking well. The social problems are often a consequence of the overwhelming amount of information your brain is taking in - it's hard to take in social information when your brain is being overloaded Also some of us do or have had some of the more disturbing / grosser sides of autism - e.g. the fecal smearing or pica - just so you know.

My child would be considered an "aspie" kid. But he was diagnosed with ASD. My son CONSTANTLY STIMS verbally!!!! From the moment he gets up till he goes to bed. Sometimes it's random, most of the time its repetitive sounds and LOUD too! It drives some family members nuts. Its tough to be around all day. He also hums when he eats....just like Abbie. He has many obsessions, sensitivities and sensory overload issues. His is considered between level 1-2 ASD. Apparently it goes to level 4...I think. His ASD is still enough to completely disrupt normal family days and enough for us to tweak our whole lives around it.

This was a great Q&A! I love you guys and really enjoy watching your videos. If you’re interested in getting a gps tracker, look up the AngelSense gps. I know a few autism families that use and love them and it sounds like it’s different than the ones you have looked into. I won’t ramble off details because it’s all on their site, but it is the only one I would consider using. I think the police usually use project lifesaver. At least here in PA they do. Anyway, I love what you guys are doing! It’s inspiring and encouraging and makes me want to buy a camera to give people a look into my family’s autism experience. 😃

I have Asperger's. I have developemental delays but mine came much later, around mid teens. I have severe sensory problems and social difficulties. I have issues with executive functioning too. My Asperger's has resulted in a serious, chronic mental illness including a severe ED that I am currently in recovery from. I live in supported living. My life is not typical of someone my age, I am 30 years old. I have never had a serious relationship, I find friends very difficult to make and keep. My best friend in the whole world is my dog, a little whippet. I do not have a job, I have never had more than a part time job which lasted 4 months when I was 16. I have all consuming interests. I am very routine oriented. I have big issues with change. I have very big meltdowns involving SIB. I stim. I know this is probably no longer relevant given the live date was early october but I thought I would add it in incase it helps anyone.

Definitely genetic predisposition but environmental factors/circumstances to determine whether ASD happens and where on the spectrum! I had an amazing pregnancy but labour that went horribly wrong. 40hours in active labour with baby in the wrong position. She could never be delivered naturally. The hospital simply left her in for way too long till we force to have a S-section. There was an infection going on and my baby had slow reactions.

Someone asked what's the difference between aspergers and autism. I don't know if that's been answered. But I have two children with an autism diagnosis. My youngest is a level 1 and he is definitely what use to be considered Aspergers. Like Asa said Sensory and Social are the biggest issues. The sensory and social issues can also trigger major anxiety. My other son is considered a 4 I think. He is non verbal and has developmental delay. I would say the brain and body connection difficulties are much more an issue for our non verbal child. For example we can tell him to smile. You know he wants to and he even tries. But he just can't get it right. So when we do photos we have to make him laugh to get a smile. Distractions and obsessions over things cause him to be easily side tracked where my youngest is super or even hyper focused on tasks. But both of them have major struggles just in different areas. Also the Jenni McCarthy talk. I'm with you all on not liking the word cure. my youngest who is in typical school and doesn't need an IEP won't eat healthy at all. We did therapy for him and that's it and all it took for him to blossom and do so well. But We have done everything with my oldest therapy, diet and he feels better because he does have GI issues but his autism is still what it is. It hasn't changed anything except made him healthier. The therapy has helped tremendously but not anything like the progress his younger brother was able to make. They are all different and only time will let you know what functioning level they will grow into. Therapy is what makes them stronger and achieve goals.

We currently have an early interventionist through the Department of Disabilities & Special Needs. She, sadly, has been pretty much useless. She's fresh out of college, not knowledgeable about other services or our insurance hurdles, never actually answers any of the questions I have, was no help during our school transition or IEP, cancels constantly, doesnt believe our sons diagnosis, has fudged his assessments to make his scores higher than they should be, and in over a year has not helped our son make any progress. He has however, made leaps and bounds in just a month of being in a special needs preschool classroom through our local school. I'm now wrestling with the decision of if I should just terminate our Early Intervention services. We are currently on 4 different waiting lists to get his evaluation and medical diagnosis (all we have is the school districts evaluation). I worry that since our E.I. is contracted through DDSN, that if I terminate service it will be seen later as we don't need ANY services, and that they won't provide ABA therapy once we get his medical diagnosis. He likely won't qualify for extended school year, so we would like to have ABA therapy at least over the summer. Our EI isn't helpful, but I also don't want to set us up for failure later on if I end service. Am I over thinking this or being paranoid? What do you suggest? And no, we can't change interventionists. The other ones in our area have a full case load.

Any advice on how to stay calm for your test to see if you have autism/Dyslexia? I am 32 years old and get tested next month.
@Tintenfischchen7 жыл бұрын
Are you afraid of the test itself or of the diagnosis that may follow?
@_little_mama_purple34527 жыл бұрын
Violet Heroine I am scared of both.
@Tintenfischchen7 жыл бұрын
Did they tell you how the test will look like? I'm not from the US, so I don't know how your test is gonna look like, but it's definitely not gonna be like a test in school or something like that. All you have to do is be honest when they ask you questions (directly or on a paper) and explain your problems and feelings to the best of your ability. As long as you do that, there is no right or wrong, so no reason to worry about the 'test'. Same goes for any tasks you may be asked to perform. It's not about doing great and impressing them. They just wanna get a good picture of who you are, where your problems are, how you approach different situations... They wanna get to know the real you, so the best thing you can do is just be yourself. The diagnosis that may follow is basically just a label. When you walk out the doctor's office with the official diagnosis, you'll be the same person you were when you walked in. The only thing that changed is that there is a label, a word for what you're going through, for your symptoms. You're still so much more than your diagnosis. The only difference it makes is actually a positive one: when you have an official diagnosis, it's much easier to get access to the right therapies, the right doctors, the right meds etc.. Your insurance will probably pay for at least some of the expenses, which is always a great help. Therapists and meds can be very expensive and I don't think any insurance will pay for anything like that if there isn't an official diagnosis. You'll also have an official document stating that you have an ILLNESS. You can throw that into people's faces when they're being ignorant and saying things like 'you're just lazy!', 'stop complaining and get your act together!' etc. ...😂😝
@_little_mama_purple34527 жыл бұрын
Violet Heroine Violet Heroine I know how the test is for kids that do not talk, because My son had the test when he was 4 years old. My son is non verbal/ autism. My mom die and I am now seeing all the things my mom did to make my life easier that is hard for to do myself. My aunt called me lazy most of my life. Lol
@Tintenfischchen7 жыл бұрын
Your test will probably be different, but as I said, there's no real reason to be afraid of it. Just be honest and open and it will be fine. Getting diagnosed is the first step into a more positive future that includes therapy to finally deal with all the 'sh*t from the past' we tend to carry around and also just to learn life skills and different coping mechanisms. I really think things will change for the better once you get diagnosed properly, so don't freak yourself out over this 'test'. You're just gonna spend some time with one or more doctors, talk, maybe answer a questionnaire, play some games (you probably know that one where you have to match emotions to pictures of people's faces showing different emotions..?), things like that. No reason to worry. I wish you and your son all the best for the future!

Hi guys, only half way through the video but thought I'd chip in about the differences between Asperger's and Autism. Traditionally all that made the distinction was that with Aspergers there was no speech delay, and there is high intelligence. I think one of the main reasons Asperger's has been removed as a diagnosis is because these are two minor distinctions and they have proven false on so many occasions, such as the author of The Reason I Jump who is non-verbal but has incredible intelligence. Most people originally diagnosed Aspergers now just call themselves autistic, it makes things a lot easier since - from personal experience- you say you have Asperger's and most people go 'what's that?'

I know y'all mentioned researching CBD for Abbie, what is it y'all are considering using it for specifically and what are your thoughts so far? Feel free to reach out if you have any specific questions, we began our journey with CBD about 16 months ago!

Natalia Martan CBD is a cannabinoid extracted from the cannabis plant, the most widely known cannabinoid is THC(which is what makes individuals feel high) ....CBD oil on the other hand gives you the benefits of the cannabis plant ~ pain and nausea relief, helps control anxiety, is helpful for symptoms of PTSD, etc~ minus the "high" and is completely legal in the US without a prescription. Like all treatments however it works differently for different people. For example, my husband uses CBD oil 3 times a day for his Anxiety & PTSD...he will use more if needed as a rescue medication. My mother uses CBD to treat chronic knee pain. There are currently ongoing research studies with CBD/Autism .....these came about after many families living with autism became vocal about the benefits they have seen with its use, frequently the transition or when meltdowns seem to occur is the number one benefit discussed with CBD oil/Autism.
