My Jan. 1, 2023 Patreon lesson teaches you how to play this epic by Peter Lang. Each month we take a deep dive into classic finger-style repertoire with a careful emphasis on documenting and reflecting the intention of the original artists. Every lesson contains a full transcription of the tablature and a video lesson averaging 45 minutes in length. Please come support thoughtful research / andrewlardnerguitar
This post is dedicated to my friend Tony Klassen who passed away this month. His passion for collecting, restoring, and building replicas of niche and classic guitar designs will forever be remembered. He told me on multiple occasions that The Thing at the Nursery Room Window was his favorite guitar record, the one which had the greatest impact on him as a player. We got to be very good pals over the last several years and I miss him every day.

Your attention to detail always brings a smile to my face. I started learning this tune in the early 80's. And I agree with Tony, The Thing at the Nursery Room Window is at the the top of my Acoustic guitar list. I listen to it at least once a week. Peter Lang doesn't get the recognition he deserves. He is in my holy Trinity of Acoustic guitarists, John Fahey, Peter Lang and Leo Kottke. Great work Andrew. Thanks.

Tony built beautiful guitars and I had one on my wish list, sadly will never be now. I love your playing, Andrew, I’m learning a lot from watching you.

Andy, I watched so many of your videos, and I am so happy that a handful of guitar players are keeping Leo's and John's music alive. They are national treasures and their music should continue to be passed on. Thank you from an old 12 stringer many moons ago. Oh, and the fact that you have a 12 string Bozo kills me!

Back in the early days of FM radio - when genres were more broadly defined and there was an abundance of “crossover” I would hear this song on Houston’s KLOL 101.1 FM - a decidedly more rock-oriented station. I bought the LP and shortly after found another Tacoma release featuring Peter Lang, John Fahey, and Leo Kottke. Thus began my foray into the work of some masters of open-tuning, and more particularly, “American Primitive Guitar,” led by Fahey. Lang’s, “The Thing at the Nursery Room Window,” was on my turntable for several weeks/months in ‘73-‘74. Still love it.

Awesome cover, Andrew! One of Lang's best. So sad to hear about Tony. May his guitars and inspiration live on. Happy new year!

Thank you. He built a little over 240 guitars, his wife is reaching out to put together a scrapbook of as many as possible for his memorial in May. He will certainly live on.

Replicating even one Euphonon is a big undertaking, let alone the breadth and depth of the catalog that Tony compiled of then-extinct guitar makes and models. A real head spinner for me, at least. Some claim that the J-185 body shape makes the ideal all around fingerpicking guitar, but that Bacon and Day Senorita seems to lack nothing but a little less wood. I was hping to fanagle a less ornate Senorita, but waited too long. Anyway, Tony sure was a doer.

what the hell, how guitar can sound so good... also melody and playing is super nice. Do you use some kind of special and expensive guitar strings? Could you please recommend me very good guitar in 1000-3000eu range for this kind of playing?
@andrewlardner

Hey buddy. No, no special strings here. Bozo guitars have a unique tone so it’s hard to recommend something similar. I’d try to go to different stores and play a bunch of stuff, find something that inspires you!

Was this one of Tony's guitars? Bozo Podunavac is about as niche as you can get, as far as recognizable luthiers go.

No, Tony actually never got his hands on a Bozo. Had plans to bring this one and Leo's 12 over to the shop but never got the chance.
