My friend geared up for a battle with her very strict, religious family. She was at dinner with her parents at their house when she was about 20. During the normal dinner conversation, she just stood up and said loudly, "I'm gay! There I'm out!" Her mother stood up and "This is the last of the milk! I'm out too! Now, can we continue dinner?" My friend was so shocked she couldn't move. Her mother finally said, "We knew your gay since you were 14. It's sad that it took YOU this long to figure it out. You need to be more honest with yourself. You know how the Lord feels about liars." And that was it. Their love never changed for her and they welcomed her partner a few years later.

Mine did exactly that. Still didn’t stop me from having some anxiety. Some of the fear is about admitting it, that makes it real. Until then you can still persuade yourself it might not be real, might go away, you’re just experimenting etc. Telling the people that are the centre of your world, that makes it somehow more concrete.

My thoughts exactly. Our daughter told me she was gay at the age of 9. We were sitting on a rainbow bench during pride, and she said that's where she belongs too. I told her all we ever wanted was for her to be happy and hugged her. She replied "thanks mom... Can I try the go-cars now?" And we did 😄❤️

I came out when i was 19 to my Mother. Turns out, she asked me if i was gay. By then i was about to tell her anyway, so i said yes. Then she gave me a big hug, and said i LOVE YOU! Both my parents were just fine with it. What i would like to say to guys who are afraid to come out, just think of this. If you're in a loving family, and your parents have always told you they love you no matter what, i say come out. Parents tend to always surprise you, and never react they way you envisioned it. There will be that awkwardness for a bit, however it will be the best thing you will ever do in your life. For those who might think there parents may not accept you as you are after coming out, well, that's something they need to deal with, not you. Parents who toss their child out simply because they don't accept your lifestyle, they are the ones who failed as parents. I've seen it all, and let me tell you, even this does not end your relationship with your parents. Most Parents do come around, so have faith, and never ever think it's your fault. Be proud of you are, i know i am. :-)

Spot on. As a father myself, I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiments expressed here. One of the saddest things I heard was a radio debate about how parents should react if their children came out. One caller in particular stuck in my mind with her response to another caller expressing the wish that her child wasn't gay. Her response was,'I just wish that my son (who had died in an accident) was still here. As the father said, love your children unconditionally while your lucky to have them in your life.

I knew my Mum knew before I said anything or fully accepted it myself as one Christmas when I was about 17 I overheard heard her talking to my grandma about it downstairs. No big drama from them in the end, no pressures over grandchildren I was just told that all they wanted was for me to be happy. That was it. When I was 18 my mom sent me an email titled “Over the Rainbow,” telling me “we haven’t had a chance to really talk in a while …” and told me she knew - and she’s started to suspect since I was THREE. This is a beautiful scene. When i came out to my Mom as gender fluid, she just looked at me and shrugged. She said "and? What's the big deal?' I was a bit surprised, but she just continued the conversation of whatever we'd been talking about before I blurted out my identity. Never batted an eye, my beautiful mother. We did discuss it in detail later, when I got over the shock that she had been so accepting as to be nonchalant.

Beautifully done. I wish that I'd had the nerve to come out to my parents when I'd planned to....maybe it is for the best. My dad would have come around eventually but he would have needed time....time no one knew he didn't have. 5 months later he was gone. 28 Father's Day's later...I still miss him.

I watched a lot of coming out stories and this has to be near the top. The expression on the kid when his parents remained stoic was great. The Mom was absolutely hilarious. She let it out with honesty and humor. Dad was great also as it was a topic they probably frequently discussed.

My cousins daughter (they have 10 kids) came out at the dinner table too. Terrified and already had a suitcase packed for the aftermath. All that happened was ‘Yeah we all thought so, well you’d better bring her round for dinner soon’ and life went on just as smoothly as before. ❤😊 She was so relieved!

I wish I had the same reasons.. my mother is a teacher on religion in her school and my dad just plain conservative. but that wasn't the reason why I'm 27 yo and still haven't coming out from my parents. because my mother has high blood pressure and hospitalized couples of times because of it, and my father just got stroke last year after decades of struggling through the high blood pressure.. I'm afraid I'll just killed them by coming out..

My mom isn't supportive of these things either. I'm gay but my mom refuses to believe or accept it. My mom is very conservative and very religious and because of this she is against homosexuality. I have an older brother too and he knows that I'm gay but he is ashamed to have a gay sister. It hurts when your family doesn't accept you but when you have friends that accept and love for who you are it's all a person needs.

Nice to know that in a lot of ways people are becoming more accepting to people and things they don't understand or completely agree with, it isn't everywhere I know that but it is still nice to see that it is far better now than it really ever has been before. Be your best, happiest, truest self. By doing this you are better able to live your life and help other's and the world around you. Denying oneself and suppressing it only leads to long term stress and pain or worse it leads to ignorance and anger. It is important to be informed on proven facts and take information from reputable sources. When my son came out, he did it in a public place with a large bench between me and him, all because of the attitudes and discrimination I had learnt as “Normal” in my day. I held out my hand, said “Congratulations, I still love you.” and left it at that. Shocked him more than a homophobic rant would have. When he asked me later that day why I was so calm about it, I said I had a decade of signs pointing towards his homosexuality, and I didn’t have a problem with it. Be you. You are not me, you do not have to be my shadow, you can be whatever you and your genetics choose. I’m not the one to judge. Now, he comes to me way more than his christian mother when he needs to offload. All because I just listen, maybe give some ideas, and never judge.
