Coincidentally, I did the same thing a week ago, also in Florida, while visiting my sister. She had a walk-in closet filled with clothes and I had a little corner I stuffed with pillows so I could record my ads. It worked great! I didn't have a fuzzy rug though. Love how resourceful you get in your videos.

This is the kind of content I'm here for. Like most voice over talents, I don't get away from home very often, but cobbling together booths from hotel materials and whatever gadgets you can fit in a suitcase is some of the most fun you can have in this profession.

If you have a walk-in closet of your own that you want to use as your regular sound booth, you can hang some cheap moving blankets behind the clothes on little spring clamps with hooks. When you're ready to use the booth, you can hang more blankets in front of the clothes, if you want. Hang a shoe organizer on the door, maybe over a foam board panel.

So I have all my recording stuff for singing and doing music in my garage. And I was skeptical that I would be able to build a booth that would really help my recording‘s or not. This past summer I made a beach canopy using a cube shape pieced together using PVC pipe. It just so happened that the pieces I had left over from that project were just the right length to make a smaller cube using all the same connectors I had on hand, so I layered it with thick blankets on all sides and wouldn’t you know the recording of just a plain audio track with no settings what so ever had very little reverb and it sounded very nice and smooth. I am totally impressed!! I could break this thing down and put it in a carrying bag and take it anywhere if I needed to very easily. I want to say I might’ve spent between 20 and $40 on the PVC pieces so I basically got two different size cubes out of that no problem.

I'm working on a semi-temporary booth at the moment and I'm really excited about the design. The key is how the frame is built and how it breaks down into three main bits.. It is essentially a 30 inch plank of wood that mounts a door very securely via backwards L-brackets. There are screw hooks which hold one acoustic panel in place against the door. Then on either end of the plank, there are detachable IKEA table legs, 3 bucks each. They act as rails to hold 2 other panels, as well as the "roof" which is at door-height.

Mike, have you looked into the Carry-On Vocal Booth from the guys who make the Producers Choice acoustic blankets? They have an optional hood that creates a wrap-around vocal booth with built-in table and mic mount. Seems like it could make your VO life a lot simpler. If nothing else it would be interesting to have you review it.

Yeah. most of his videos are saying "Record away from your computer.". Although I think a large part of making recording at your desk better would be quiet down your computer by getting better fans like Noctua or Be Quiet! fans and where possible move to SSDs so you don't have seek sounds.

I am potentially looking at a mic upgrade, could you recommend a mic for commentary that will block out noises better like PC fans, and ac, noise outside of the room etc. I hear this is where a dynamic mic is better than a condenser because it isn't as sensitive. Would you recommend something like the cad e100s, or the dynamic mics such as a shure sm7b? (I know the cloud lifter situation) Or maybe some other mic (shotgun mics?) I have looked at some dynamic mics and am curious to get more of a professional's opinion.
@CzornyLisek7 жыл бұрын
There is no magical microphone that will get rid of noises... well there are contact mics that are worn like collar(called laryngophone) but they doesn't sound that great(but are great in planes, tanks ect.) If You don't want noise. Get rid of them physically or isolate yourself from them as best as it's possible.
@JackRatermannFilms7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, which I am just aware that if I were to upgrade to a better microphone, some options will block noise more than others, and yeah I agree the lavalier mics are not too great sounding.
@CzornyLisek7 жыл бұрын
I don't alk about lavalier mics that are just normal microphones but about laryngophones. Laryngophone is microphone that is worn like collar tightly on neck. It's contact mics meaning it take vibrations directly from surface it's connected to. It's practically 100% immune to noise around. Those stereotypical army communication sounds in films, games ect. many times come from larygophones. No no mic will rly block better. ALL microphones for low freq are practically omnidirectional while for hi freq are quite directional, with some types to the point it's a beam. So from where come names cardioid, hypercardioid, omni ect.? Well such names mean that microphone have more less such freq response in around 1-5kHz range(depending on design ofc). So yeah shotgun will be more like beam than omni. But never the less it's still will by practically omni for low freq. And omni microphone will be practically beam for hi freq. Dynamic microphone might be too "crude" to "hear" fly farting(as membrane will simply work as damper) but still even low volume sounds will be there given enough gain. Even more "crude" might be ribbon microphones with transformer inside(transformer and ribbon have simply pure impulse response most of the time). But not "hearing" fly farting doesn't mean sound rejection.
@JackRatermannFilms7 жыл бұрын
ah I gotcha, thanks! Also cool to hear about those laryngophone!
