The temperature here in Maryland is dropping fast! It's going to be 17 degrees and snowing tonight. The problem is, the water around my boats is going to freeze and that could lead to some serious damage. I can't let that happen! I'm going to be sleeping over in my boat WEBO tonight so that I can make sure the ice doesn't freeze and ruin anything. It's going to be a very cold night camping in the boat, but that's what it takes to be a crabber sometimes.

Great video. Brings back some memories - when I was 8, my family and I lived on a boat for 2 years or so, some of that time in the Bay. I had a small berth and an old crate to hold my belongings. That was it. I'd lay there at night listening to the water against the hull just like you were describing those ice sounds. I'm sure I'm forgetting some miserable cold nights but those were some of the best times.

Brings back memories of when I used to live on a 28' boat for half a decade. It was pretty interesting for the most part and if I ever had to, I'd do it again. Little limited as far as amenities went for a while but it was pretty decent living. On really windy nights, I would get tossed around in the bow and listen to the ropes straining Miss ya, Dulcinea.

You should order up some Chinese diesel heaters. They're $100 bucks and you can tap them into the boats diesel tanks and customize the location. They're only 12v to power the fans inside them and you can run them on a trickle charged battery.

Greetings from Alaska. Just started checking out your YT content. Great job and good job on keeping the boats afloat. I admire the ambition and work ethic. Nice to see someone else who started in their teens too snd just keep sending it. I don’t do the commercial fishing thing but can relate. I run a construction company and have rentals and such. Never fails the worse the weather the busier I am either taking care of my own places or doing damage control on my clients homes. It was -10 here this week and I was shoveling my roofs to keep them from ice damming and or collapsing. Sometimes you just got to embrace the suck and keep going. Cheers to 2024

add a canopy to the back and cover it in solar panels and maybe a wind turbine. build a few battery cells and mount all the components. that boat can handle a system large enough to keep you fully powered a long time. maybe indefinitely. it will keep the heaters running in winter, and a perfect sized A/C for summer

With good wishes and luck, you won't have to boat camp again this year. But if you do, a large sheet of cardboard over the he hatchway will help keep the heat nearer to you. But stretching a tarp over the cover and tying it off to the gunnals and stern will provide a little extra space. However, if you're really adventurous and risk taking. A camp propane tent heater is your friend. Just make sure you have extra one pound propane bottles or a connection hose to hook it to a standard gas grill bottle.

If you get a extended run tank for that generator which is six gallons that will give you 60 hours of run time. Thats the setup i use with a Black& Decker 8000btu heat and ac unit in my semi truck. Works great and cheap.

I would consider installing a couple diesel heaters. A fairly lowcost way of heating up both the engine bay and underhatch areas and the pilot house and cabin. Might also come in handy if you go for a winter season catch. They are pretty easy on 12V power and fuel also put out way more heat then a space heater. I live off grid in Arizona and use one for heating myself. As someone that has had boats I am reminded of the old saying " a boat is a big hole in the water you throw money into'"! Good for you if you can figure out how to pull that money and more back out of the water! Living independently and making your own living is an awesum thing!

Luke, the cheap Chinese diesel heaters can be had for around $80 each. They could be plumbed to your diesel tank, exhaust is easy, and they are 12v DC. You could put it in the bilge and set the thermostat to 32 or so and problem solved. As a bonus, you could also heat the cabin and wheelhouse using the remote control and some additional dryer hose venting. Have fun... Joe

Well I'm sitting here in my 1 season (summer) insulated toyhauler. It's 60° in here. It's taken a while to get used to living in an icebox/freezer. Working on insulating it as the weather permits. Just spent 2 weeks in subfreezing temps. I've gone through 30+ gallons of propane. I'm rationing my last 20# bottle trying to make it to the 3rd of next month when my SSA direct deposit hits my bank acct and I can go get 5 bottles refilled. It's been in the single digits here in central Oklahoma. One thing I haven't had to worry about is the pipes freezing. I'm on week 4 with no running water. But there's hope on the horizon. It's going to be in 60's and sunny next week. So I'll be able to finish winter weather prepping this thing into a 4 seasons unit. Then I can finally hook up the water. I've spent some cold nights in boats doing exactly as you were. It's no fun but you have to protect your invest and livelihood. In the absence of a generator could you connect a weighted hose to the engine water outlet and exhaust that water down below the boat and run the engine. That would give you a bubbler to keep the ice from freezing against the hull and running the engine would keep it and the bilge from freezing I would think? What's your thoughts on this idea Luke?

I stayed on my boat for most of hurricane sandy! The marina i was in at the time in New Jersey had a big wishbone style trailer on land behind my boat slip. I left around 11-12 to a rising tide to head home to the wife. The next morning i went to the marina thinking my boat was gone looking at the destruction at other marinas! Luckily the trailer collected three boats that would have floated and probably would have swamped mine!! I was so lucky to sustain no damage!!!!

Kinda making more like a RV rather than a work boat.. make some great Chesapeake Bay weekend camping trip videos, make some “catch clean cook videos, rafting up at Conquest Beach, the spring fishing for Rock.. stuff like that would be awesome videos.. I really enjoyed my time working on the bay in the early 80’s.. great times on the Seahawk II with Bob Thaw and the Outlaw with George and Wade..

As someone who thought his tractor was protected well enough for winter and experienced extreme lows and wind chill, it froze and pushed a freeze plug out of the block. Its now full at 100% antifreeze for the time being, i dont use it much in winter. Gotta find myself the right metric size block heater to stick in it. Its so small of an engine and the freeze plug is 50mm, i should be to get a good size one for it and have no worries. Rather pay the electricity for it than have to do what i had to do to use my tractor while outside in the dark to get my tractor ready so i could get my car out of the driveway (1000ft of uphill, straight ice that day from freezing rain, made it 200' tops. Lol) i totally understand where youre at. I had to do what some call a northern cold start (seen it called canadian and a north dakota cold start) with a propane heater under the engine😂
@mrmotofy
@mrmotofy Жыл бұрын
If you have proper antifreeze the block heater should only be needed like 2hrs before starting. But wire up a battery tender to keep it topped. I added a dual power inlet. 1 goes to the tender for constant charging. The other goes to a regular alum exterior electrical box with a outdoor switch cover. That controls the block heater and just flip it on for use.

So when I was a kid, me my dad and two uncles and cousins would go down to the eastern shore. We had a shore house down there, loved that little wooden death trap😂. Anyway we would go out on my uncles boat and go fishing. I remember I feel asleep in the primary area at the table, woke up and my dad had a fish on the line. Here I am half asleep he’s like reel it in boy 😂. Can’t remember what it was. But that’s why I gravitate to your videos, nostalgia. Good times man good times. They caught a lot of marlins on the boat, it looked identical to the southern girl. Looked cozy in there man

Id love to work out of somewhere like this. Ive worked in North Sea before and whilst the waves and weather can be gnarly. You see some of the most spectacular sunsets and rises.

hey i am a crabber in Delaware and my father was like the fifth guy to start crabbing in Delaware back in the early 1950s... a trick he did back then in cold weather... not environmental friendly but in a pinch pour kerosene down the threw hull fittings... it pushes the water out... but there is a trick to it... which you probably can figure out... but drop me a pm and maybe i can chat with you... i would love to ride out with you next spring some time!!

I think I'd be figuring out how to get some of those ice eaters in the water before I'd be sleeping in the boat... but kudos to you sir - nice job keeping those boats safe!
