It's come time to sell my dream boat, Webo. I was hoping this day wouldn't come, but the Webo isn't going to be able to do what I want it to do. Even though it's a great boat, it's not a great crabbing boat because it drafts too much water. The Webo is the best built boat I've had and has a bunch of features that are not common in other boats. The craftsmanship is top notch! I hate to see it go, but it just means that there is another new boat on the horizon...

My brother had a 22ft 57 wood Owens, and he added more metal to the rutter. Without power stearing, he had a hard time turning the wheel. The next year, he cut it off and sold the boat, then bought a brand new 28ft, 12.5 ft beamed Hatteras in 1966. It was one of the smallest boats they ever made. It was fast but could spin around on a dime being twin screw. It was when they started converting over to fiberglass, and it was thick.

That is such a bullshit statement that's been around for too many years. One of my saddest days was selling my last boat because of medical reasons and I miss boating more than anyone could imagine . It's expensive but I regret nothing . Edit This statement is said mostly by people that have never owned a boat or could never even dream of being able to afford one . My last boat that I sold I had for 11 years and I sold it for more than I paid for it . And that was because of all the labor and love that I put into taking care of it and keeping it in pristine shape . There is hardly a day that goes by that I don't think about my boating days on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake .

The deeper parts of the bay are basically dead zones a lot of year. Due to the oxygen depletion from the farming run off. Even in my short 38 years I have seen how bad the bay has become. Thankfully the legislature is taking big steps to try to save it before it is unmanageable. We have a lot other rivers being restored to and some of the largest went from a D grade in water quality to B the last couple of years.

Ronnie Carman of Carman boats built me a 40ft deadrise glass over plywood. Fiberglassed the whole inside and outside. Had a 13 ft beam and I put a 3208/375 it. She'd cruise 19-20 knots all day and run top speed 22-23 knots depending on the tide.

At 13:10, the steering reservoir must maintain 25 to 35 lbs. of air pressure. The air pressure assists the fluid to move faster to the steering ram. Without the pressure, you have to excessively turn the helm. There are also engine controls that use a pressurized cylinder like that as well. The engine control system uses glycol, not hydraulic oil. They are great controls if maintained properly, a lot smoother than cables.

I had the pleasure of working with and learning a lot about the Chesapeake deadrise, from start to finish, with Joey who owns Sinapatuxent Boatworks in Snow Hill Md, out of 2 chicken houses. Which actually are pretty perfect to do it in. Which in comes in handy bcuz I’ve redone a floor in a 35’ Maycraft as well as many other repairs for friends and family. I’d much rather take and spend the money for a custom built “wooden plank” boat, than just going the cheaper route and buying something that’s a production model. I’ve found that that’s the ONLY way you’ll find your perfect boat.I’m 53 and I wished I had the space to build a smaller 16-18’ Chesapeake skiff outfitted the way I want. A person could build a boat like that in say 10-12 months comfortably, while working a regular 40 hr a week job. If properly taken care of, the boat could outlive the lifetime of the builder.

That boat was built by someone who not only cared but took pride in it along with love/respect for whoever commissioned the build and should garner $27,500 - $29,000 all day... Asking $25,000 is a steal honestly, tough and beautiful.

Did you not ask about the draft depth when you bought it? Just wondering why you thought a rough water net boat would be ideal for crab fishing in 3-5 ft of water. That makes no sense. The blue crab fishermen along the gulf coast use shallow draft boats with outboard engines. After listening to your story, I’ve got the think the entire eastern seaboard was laughing at you

10' waves? we get bigger then that on the lake outside. on bad days we can get 20 even 30' waves out on the lake. what gets bad is when they "echo" off the shore so you have 20'ers coming from one direction, then 10'ers coming from a different one.

You should look into kinnamon boats they build them on tilghman Island. Obviously nobody makes a cheap boat nowadays but they built a few for us when I was working up there on the bay. you can't beat one of their boats. We had a 28 footer two 30 footers. The Brittany May was somewhere around 40 and then the last boat they did for us was a 46 by 14 called the little miss Emily. 6 pots wide between the gunwales. And we'd stack them 7 wide and 3 high on the roof. Cummins 450 in the dog box. There were no more days off due to rough seas when we started working that boat 😂. Jellyfish are the only thing I don't miss from those days. There's no better feeling than having to pull the boat into the travel lift slings with 100 bushels on the boat and water coming in the scuppers.

An aluminum boat would be the way to go. I am surprised they were building wooden commercial fishing boats in the late 80s. Aluminum construction has so many advantages over wood and composite construction. Modern diesel engines have numerous advantages over older engines and the two main advantages weight and power and the ability to run a smaller displacement engine and make the same if not more than the older engines.
