Watched this a couple of days ago (it's May 2019) and immediately put the tuning technique to the test on my new .25 cal Brocock Bantam Sniper Magnum which has been giving me consistency issues since I got it. My feeling was that it was pushing the 25.39s at 940-960 fps and that the pellets simply don't have a low enough BC to remain stable at that speed. So, I've backed everything down and have been able to get some very nice, consistent statistics ending up with a 150 bar reg setting and a hammer spring adjustment that eventually produced an extreme spread of 3 fps and a standard deviation of 1 !!! That's not a typo... I'm real excited to get to the range tomorrow and see how this tune works at 100 yards which is what I bought the gun specifically to do as a bench gun. Anyway TY for the detailed procedural, it was more than a little helpful and by far the most easily understood of the very few explanations on Harmonic Tuning that are out there. Cheers Joe P.

Why I liked: - Essential information for those who want to tune - Straight to the point - Synthetic view - Honesty !!! You mention that you learnt from others and provide your sources of information. So many people publish stuff on the web and try to make people think that they invented the wheel.. - and the last but not least: you saved me a lot of time with this video and the links. I've been going through this whole process of tuning my Streamline 22 cal after the installation of a Huma reg. I started with a reg pressure of 120. Accuracy with speeds above 830 fps is a disaster. Group sizes from 1" to 2". What I understand now is that I'd better off setting the reg pressure at 130 bar and do all the hst tuning once again. I hope I'll be able to find a good match speed vs accuracy. Any thoughts / advices? Thanks for all the work you did and shared with us, newcomers to the airgun world :)

now worries mate thanks for watching! Which pellet are you tuning for? I havn't tuned a 22 yet but the factory specs are usually a good indicator of whats possible with a particular reg pressure. 130bar should be plenty. Generallllllly with pellets they are stable up to 930-940fps (depending on the pellet) so your issue with bad groups around 830fps might just be barrel harmonics, if it were going say 20fps faster OR slower the groups could drastically improve. food for thaught.

I think of reg pressure like speed of gunpowder burn and hammer spring tension and valve stem adjuster setting as how many grains of airgun “powder”. VST might be though of as a not-to-exceed setting that could allow some very fine tuning when the wheel is set to max. It’s meaningless on less than max HST settings, because it sets a limit that will not be reached. Of course it’s not exactly that simple, but once we get close to tuned it kinda is. This will mean that with a longer barrel, you are going to be expecting to need lower reg pressure and a higher hst. A heavier pellet is going to need more grains in the same barrel (+hst) and this is conveniently the thing we can easily adjust with the hst wheel. Tuning reg pressure for your heaviest pellet in your barrel and then using wheel settings for various lighter pellets, say one setting for lead and one for lead-free. Does that sound right? It seems to work that way.
@meatheadmarksman20134 жыл бұрын
Yeah for people who don't want to re tune every time they shoot something different I always advise to tune for the heaviest projectile at max and there will be useable settings for the lighter stuff further down on the hammer spring wheel somewhere. As for the gunpowder analogy I think an air fuel mixture might be a better way of thinking about it. Reg pressure is the fuel and the hammer spring is the air, you mix the two in a correct ratio to get explosive power

Greetings Unclehodge. Great informative video easy to follow. I own a fx streamline and have not adjusted the regulator it's still at factory but I did have a go at the hammer spring tention for my own curiosity!! I got the loan of the fx chronograph and was experimenting winding in and out the tention and firing off some rounds as I went it gave me a better idea of what was going on!! Anyway I settled at a speed of 909fps for the 15.89gr jsbs I was using at the time I settled at this because the ES was the lowest iv seen only 7 most of the time I did achieve a 2 for a string of 5 shots and a 0 for 4shots but realistically it's around 7 to 10 fps !!! Would you say that the relationship between the regulator and the spring tention is a happy one!! The problem with the streamline is the reg .. no external adjustment and no way of knowing what pressure it's at so I just left it at an average of 909 fps.. now i shoot the 18gr jsb and there average is around 848fps accuracy is only on at moment because i cleaned the barrel few weeks back and have being firing surplus pellets to lead it back up agen! Look forward to reply .

Hi Meathead, Ive just purchased a new FX Crown MK2 and recently returned from a weekend shooting trip where we spent some time getting acquainted with each other. I was pretty impressed to say the the least. However, once I returned home from my trip I was giving it a clean and luckily noticed that the power wheel was very loose. So loose that another turn or two of the retaining screw and it would have fallen off!! Just wondering if this was a common problem with these guns? I am concerned that it will work its way loose again. Is there a way to overcome this problem? Should I take it back to my Gun shop? Cheers

Nice video sir. Can you make a detailed (closeup video) of adjusting the regulator to higher pressure? -the procedures etc.. ( My crown´s reg creeps between 125-135bar and I´d like it adjusted to 140bar. Currently after adjusting hammer JSB heavies flies at 825fps.)
@JoePatABC5 жыл бұрын
If your reg is "creeping" you should have the reg rebuilt (spring washers and o-rings replaced). The procedure for LOWERING the original FX reg is as follows. First you MUST DEGAS the gun. That means you remove the bottle and then you shoot the gun several times to remove the residual air from the reg and the plenum. Once your gun is empty you can lower the reg pressure (I believe that is clockwise) by turning the adjustment screw in all the way. Once it's in all the way, give it one half turn back so that it is not bottomed out, you need to have some pressure flowing through the reg in order to adjust it. Screw the bottle back in and your regulator should show the new setting which will be very low. Now you will begin adjusting the reg pressure UP (counter clockwise) until you reach 100 bar. This is where you can begin your testing and HS adjustment. You can continue to adjust the regulator UP ( ONLY ) which is why I had you start at a very low pressure. Should you decide you need to lower the pressure you will have to once again degas the gun. My .25 cal Crown is set for 130 bar and shooting 25.39 JSBs at 860 fps a very stable and predictable velocity for this gun/pellet combination. Hope this helps.
@finforcer5 жыл бұрын
@@JoePatABC Thanks for the instructions. Reg creep might also be related to faulty gauge, sometimes when tapping it gives different reading -fx´s wika made gauges are notoriously poor quality and inaccurate. (considering replacing them with huma´s)

.... so now that I'm trying to shoot slugs in my crown, I bought both .22 and .25 slug liners, What kind of velocity should I be shooting them at? If .22cal with a 500mm barrel, what kind of Reg Pressure might I start at? and I have heard that the 23 grain Nielsens are pretty good so that is what I am using... and then with the .25 Cal, where might I start the Reg at so I can get a good velocity? So much to play with because every time you change ammo, you change settings. I thought that the .22 cal would be less expensive but they're not. The .25 cal are cheaper but not backyard friendly... I'll keep watching and thanks for he help!!

I havnt tuned a 22 yet so I can't really comment with any authority, I would suggest following Rolf and Gerhard from the air hunters channel on youtube and Instagram because those dude are basically specialized 22 slug shooters/tuners. As for 25 is say start as high as your comfortable with, more reg pressure is generally better especially with a short barrel. I'd run it up to 150bar and take the hammer spring through is range of motion and see where the sweet spot is, I'd expect to see 870 to 900fps, then take it out and shoot some groups

I used 140bar because that was Ted's suggested starting point. But in 25 cal 10 bar more of reg pressure with the correct hammer spring tune will net you about 30fps more muzzle velocity. More muzzle velocity means your shot will be affected less by external factors during flight but you must keep pellets under their maximum stable flight speed, too fast and they wobble or tumble and wont be accurate. Watch matt dubbers airgun ballistics 101 to learn more. I'll do some research and make a video about caliber specific regulator pressure choices soon

Thanks for the reply! Yea I expect to get out to the range and fine tune it more but thanks for the head start. Sounds like your country has the same rules here in Canada the silencer and airstripper are not used so it's nice for the info you provide being a little closer to this Crown version. Harmonically speaking. Your video has helped tremendously 😀 I would have wasted so much time and pellets. The hammer was set to the factory setting of 18 mm and I was getting terrible groups, I was going to guess at a setting of maybe 17 mm. Thanks mate!

Meathead Marksman just did some experimenting and I got the 33.9 gr. JSB shooting fairly good ~139 bar and 16.08 mm hammer spring, but still trying to get a better tune I'm at 700 meters elevation so settings are different than for someone at sea level.

Hi guys. Greetings from Sydney. Potter Firearms is the official distributer for JSB pellets in Australia, and they deal directly with the manufacturer. Unfortunately, ‘cheap’ and JSB pellets don’t exist in Australia, something to do with being on the opposite side of the planet, plus The cost of the inspection processes at the pellet factory. The only way to reduce cost is to find a good batch number and order them in bulk, and Potter will mail order on viewing a copy of your shooters license. Less people in between helps keep the costs down. I have found them to be really good to deal with. I hope this helps fellow FX oz airheads. Dave

hee man i was thinking would the stock not help or change the harmonics ? after the tune ?
@meatheadmarksman20135 жыл бұрын
if you were to shoot it out of the stock the point of impact and group size would definitely be different, but thats not really what we are concerned with when were tuning like this, we just wanna make sure we have a nice low extreme spread and that the shots are efficient so that each round doesn't use too much air. after youve done that then you have to check how it shoots in the stock and if your group size is too big or not very consistant then you would tune again but go for around 10fps faster or slower and see how it groups

Brilliant can you tell me one thing about fx manual it says the reg can be adjusted from 55-160 but then says dont go above 150 yet alot of guys guns are coming from factory at 160 , my point is do you think i can go to 160 with my crown
@meatheadmarksman20135 жыл бұрын
if any part of your manual says don't go above 150 bar that would be my advice to stick to. FX just released a bunch of guns with the new AMP regulator that can go much higher then the generation of regulators that are in yours and mine, id be very surprised to see rifles coming out of fx with the old regulators actually set to 160bar, its much more likely that its crept up over time. the previous generation can be a little creepy, mine creeps up to 155ish if i let it sit for a day or two but returns to my setting of 145 after the first shot. generally you can get good speed out of 150 bar even with the 30cal but if you want more power have a look at the huma regulators, they are the bees knees and can go up to 190bar i think and pretty much never creep

@@gus1966 thanks mate! If your gunna run multiple calibers without re-tuning the gun each time you switch you wanna make sure your hammer spring tension is bang on for the biggest caliber and run it much lower on your smaller calibers, experiment with the transfer port too cos that's easy to switch back. Although other ammo can be good Fx designed the standard liners for jsb ammo and they are generally the easiest to use and seem to be more consistant in weights and shape

You’ll find that the FX crown loves 895 to 905 ft./s if you can find the sweet spot you should be good your accuracy will tighten Up and make sure you clean the barrel before you do all you’re turning because the barrels have polishing paste in the barrel that will rob you of accuracy
@meatheadmarksman20136 жыл бұрын
It took a fair few patches to get all that goo in the barrel out but I did that when I first got it. I haven't gone that high in mv yet because it's already doin so well at 870fps. When you say 895~905 do you mean with the 33gr mk2's? I'd imagine as long as you don't shoot them to fast and destabilize them you'll do well anywhere over 850ish

That may just be the limit for a really good extreme spread. I havnt seen an unmodified crown or impact hit 900fps in 30cal yet, it's very easy to do with a 700mm barrel but standard reg and 600mm seems to be max 890fps on the top performers

@meatheadmarksman20135 жыл бұрын
@@eldairfirmiano7181 oh okay, it depends what is more important to you. The impact has bigger magazine, can make more power and shoot bigger calibers, has picatinny rails and is smaller in size, but the crown is much cheaper and still very good. So if money is no problem go for the impact, but if you can only afford the crown you will still be very happy with it.
