Congratulations, your resourcefulness and clear thinking are a spark of hope for our otherwise hopeless "modern" Western society. It seems like most people today have forgotten how to take care of themselves and expect to be spoon fed by the government taxing their neighbors to death. Videos like yours are awesome stories to hear. All the best from Canada! P.S. Be careful of those bears, moose and other potentially dangerous creatures you got out there. There seems to be no rifle strapped to your back in your hiking pictures; better have it and not need it than need it and not have it, as a wise saying goes. Political convictions come in last when SHTF. Peace! :)

Yeah, this reminds me of when I showed up to a bank, a few years ago, all proud of the fact that I never had to borrow a single cent in my life before...assuming that made me their dream customer. Self sufficient, through most of your 20s? Of course we're gonna trust you to pay this loan back. Any amount you want, here it is. Nope. They want people who buy into the system, and have a long history of working diligently on the thankless task of paying 5% a year interest on money they already spent. I guess they just rely on a simplistic formula, and they don't let the actual employee you're talking to make any decisions.

Good for you Ariel, you seem to totally have your act together. My wife and I have the same views as you about debt etc. We had a modest house built on property that I purchased when I was just out of school. The property was paid for and we paid off the home loan in about 17 years of a 30 year loan by setting goals and being sensible about our life style and purchases. It doesn't matter what others say about your decisions, you know what's best for you and I feel you made excellent choices based on your wants and needs. I think about folks who pay huge amounts for fancy new vehicles which are a terrible investment and quite unnecessary in my view. Like you, my 12 year old truck works great and does everything I need it to do, and I payed cash for it as a used vehicle. I take good care of it and expect many more years of use from it. Again, good for you for what you've done and the direction your going, I'm impressed! :)

While I have no interest in living in a tiny home per se, I liked this video (and I still like watching tiny house vids) I'm always looking at options regardless... It takes a certain kind of person to even be able to live in one of those, I think. Good for you!
@ZeoCyberG7 жыл бұрын
It may take a certain kind of person to live in a Tiny House but I wouldn't say it's a big difference from other already accepted ways of living... One factor depends on where the person is coming from... For example, someone used to living in high population areas like a major city like NYC would be used to small apartments and high cost of living... I used to live in Queens, NYC and despite not being in the city itself I paid over $1000 for a small basement apartment not much bigger than a Tiny House... College living spaces could even be smaller... I once saw a apartment that was nothing more than something some would consider the size of a large closet with a bed in it and nothing else and the asking rent for it was $450 a month, as that was over a decade ago, with housing pricing having gone up since then... So I would liken it more to the lifestyle you would experience living in a small studio apartment or similar... You just tend to have a lower cost of living and typically can get better views with a tiny house. ;-p There's also parts of the world where people still squeeze 8 or more people into what we would consider a single living room... So it's more of a mindset than something truly hard to adapt to...
@riggs203 жыл бұрын
@@ZeoCyberG The first apartment I was able to rent without roommates was what I considered to be tiny at the time: 530 square feet. I remember my brother seeing it for the first time and saying something like “This is a really small apartment!” (He’s a real jerk, but I digress. LOL) We were both only a couple of years out of college, so I told him, “Yeah, I could think of it as a really small apartment. Or…I could think of it as a really awesome dorm room!” LOL. It’s all in how you look at something. 😁

I can't believe how fast you were able to pay off your tiny house loan! That's amazing. I thought paying off $18,000 of school loans in 3 years was good. I'm in the work-real-hard phase too right now to pay off my school loan and save enough to build a tiny house in 2 years time ($25,000). Ironically I live in a seasonal tourist destination too with very high home prices (we're talking $140,000 for a seasonal 500 sq ft cabin on 1.2 acres and dilapidated farmhouses for $350,000 with nothing really in between, and those are the CHEAP ones!) I love the idea of work trade for a little parking space. Keep up the great work!

The credit history story is ridicolous. I haven’t been in debt either because I don’t purchase things I don’t need and don’t have the money for. I wonder what the bank will tell me when I apply for a loan for my tiny..
@FyNyth5 жыл бұрын
Well from my experince, if you have bad debt, horrible credit, etc, you can usually still get a loan, often with a bigger down payment and much higher interest. If you are responsible and have no debt, the answer is a flat no. If you have a different experience, I'd love to hear about it! Best wishes with whatever you do.

I know that area and you are right. 84 grand will get you an outhouse...literally. I looked there many years ago to further my backpacking/climbing career of delinquency. No way I could afford it. My climbing partner lived in his car and at times up in jellystone housing while saving/drinking his way to the next season. Another friend of mine is a Doctor in Jackson or was, she moved away because it was too expensive for her to live there.
@tedbarnhart7 жыл бұрын
A lot of people like to look at a home as an investment you live in. That was true in most cases when baby boomers where driving up values. Not so much any more. You also derive value from a home by living in it. At $90,000.00 purchased, and if you live in it for twenty years, and if the resale value is 0 at the end, your housing cost would be $375.00 a month. If at the end, the value would be half of that, then the housing cost would be half of $375.00 a month. In the long run it looks like a bargain to me. And you can move it around as your likes and employment needs change. I think you have made an excellent choice. Good luck!

That is great advice about bank loan/RV certification. That is important. I wonder if that makes things easier if God forbid you ever had damage done if you had to move your tiny house on the roads to a new location? Had you been a member of the Credit Union before approaching them for a loan? That is so great about your sister co-signing. You must have felt great when you could take her name off! :) If you can afford to buy land in a few years you could move your tiny house on and let someone put their tiny house on part of your land in exchange for the hard physical work that will get harder for you to do as you get older. Right now cutting wood and digging tubers is good exercise. By the time you are my age, it takes a toll. I can't understand the negative nellies that waste everyone's time to complain about how people overpaid and should move to some crappy part of the country. They do it on EVERY video!!!!!

Congrats to you, you've done something that works for you for an amount you could afford, that will in the end put you far ahead of where you would have ended up if you had continued to rent. The buy-in may well have been a bit steep, but your continued financial discipline is helping to bring the actual costs down. If you could find some land, there's no reason why you couldn't pull the axles out from under the house and set the trailer down on a concrete slab. I think doing his may allow you to sell the tiny house just like a standard home. Pay no attention to the haters that will do anything to point out your faults simply because they don't have the discipline to help themselves. Again, congrats on your resolve to make yourself better.

Best wishes with your plans! I am totally happy with the way mine was built. My personal experience, including customization and customer service with Tumbleweed, during the build and after as well, was really phenomenally above and beyond most companies. Though to be fair, I can't speak to the current company that goes by that name at all. All my experience was almost 7 years ago at this point. And I do know the company has changed a lot. I think almost all the employees are different, the builders are an entirely different crew, and it's grown and changed a lot. I know they do not any longer even offer via their website a design, material, and finishes like I have. And so I can't say I know anything about the current state of the company.

I can understand why you did take the loan. I mean its a 15 yr loan. So in reality you have the ability to pay it off anytime you are in the position to do so. Then you will save mucho money on interest. I think its expensive yes but the situation you were in left you without any other answer to stay in the area and to be able to get the exact home you wanted. Your sister was an angel for you at the time too
@Flightstar7 жыл бұрын
Great job at pursuing your goals. I was very surprised that real estate in your area is so expensive. That is on par with world class resort areas, and the only thing I can think of in that area is Yellowstone park, the home of Americas super volcano. Are property prices any cheaper in Montana? Question about expenses. From a perspective of someone who doesn't live in the US and hears about the horrendous costs of medical insurance there, How the heck do people manage without having A1 rated jobs that pay or subsidize their medical premiums that from what I heard can cost as much as renting a house. Its my understanding that many just go without, but in a land where a broken arm could cost 50k one could easily be bankrupted by relatively common medical treatments.
@FyNyth7 жыл бұрын
Yes I do live on the edge of a world class resort area with two national parks and one of the best ski resorts in the lower 48. There are areas all over the mountain west that are more reasonable. I'd say most people either let the government cover the costs (via stealing the money from others), or they actually take care of their health proactively and preventatively, often without any insurance.

Thoroughly enjoy your videos and your photography. Where do you store your garden crops (carrots. onions etc.)? Grew up in that area, and I give you a 'bravo' for putting up with the brutal winters and wind.

Ariel, your windows aren't much above ground level - you've said you don't keep/store food outside because of wildlife, and I'm wondering if there is ever the threat of something large trying to come in to sample your cooking (through the windows/door)??? Thanks for the great videos!

That would be possible I suppose, thankfully it hasn't happened yet anyway!

You are absolutely my role model on what I want to work towards living like. I want to live off-grid, sustainability. You're videos on the subject are invaluable to me.

Tell me u don't shovel that much snow without a blower? If u have access to wood & a small plainer u can make chop blocks, kitchen nick nacks, welcome signage, etc., from the local wood & sell to those who subscribe or want to help support your cause. I just mention this because my sister/brother n law live similar to your life style & do this which is very profitable. I appreciate your independence don't give it up. I'm sure your aware of Craigslist & similar sites u can find free or used discounted materials. Your interest rate considering co-sign & unsecured is a good rate. Because your home is Mobil the finance companies consider it a flight risk. If I can offer any out of the box ideas to any difficulties your struggling with I would be glad to do the research. Pay the mortgage partial every two weeks will also cut your interest cost considerably. Also, if u are a little business minded u can start a proprietor company & write off & depreciate everything over time. Wish u the best. Be blessed.

I am interested in your phone bill being just 12.99 per month... I have recently gotten a phone for christmas, it is an lg, sorry that is all the tech. knowledge that I know... can you share your provider?
@FyNyth7 жыл бұрын
Sure! I use PagePlus Wireless. Mostly because they are last I knew the only prepaid provider using Verizon's network. Republic Wireless is also a pretty good prepaid company that several friends use.

How many gallons of freshwater does your unit hold? Eventually this is the way that I would like to live but aren't there restrictions on what you can park on land(purchased)as far as it being considered an appropriate dwelling by law,this is what I'm confused about?

I have a 35 gallon tank as well as a 10 gallon tanked water heater. And yes, the rules about what a human is allowed to live in are different in every state, county, city, township, etc.

It must have been a sight coming down the road being delivered to you. I would have been so excited. I note the tri-axel trailer here too, I'm not sure but think most of them are on only 2 axel trailers...or basically a car hauler as we call them. Yours is much better suited I think. I used to drive semi truck for a window company and delivered in your area sometimes. I'd be willing to bet I could guess within 50 miles of your location. The area your in is certainly not a-typical economically of very many places in the world.Wyoming typically wouldn't support these kind of income or expenses in most places I've been especially for the low end type of jobs you indicate you do. My point is the numbers your throwing around wouldn't be feasible for the majority of folks simply due to location. BTW I think your doing awesome Ariel and I applaud you. Before my message above is misunderstood no I don't think your doing anything illegal or immoral but I'd bet you know some very famous, and very rich, people on a first name basis.

I like the idea of "retiring" when you pay your house off. I'll have mine paid off next summer. Can't wait for that day.

You have a great head on your shoulders! I admire the decisions that you've made so far and the fact that you got a 15 year loan and are almost paying it off in three years is fantastic! Do you ever get lonely in such a remote area and do you live close to your parents and sister?

Thanks! No, my family lives much closer to the two coasts. I mostly enjoy my privacy. :)

My mortgage payment includes taxes and homeowner insurance that also covers my workshop behind my house. Also by combining auto ins. with the home owners i got a discount. Is the monthly amount including the taxes and insurance or do you pay them seperately. Also i had to pay an extra$75.00/ month for private insurance on the home that lenders add on until I paid down a certain amount and was dropped by the bank after showing i could make the payments.

The taxes I paid as one lump sum to the DMV when I purchased the tiny house. Insurance I've paid annually in a lump sum as well which continues till the bank loan is gone. See more insurance details in these posts - fynyth.blogspot.com/2015/10/insurance-for-tiny-house.html and fynyth.blogspot.com/2015/10/tiny-house-insurance.html

I am considering something similar and will put in a Septic Tank first. Shhh! It is really a place to live in with built in root celar. So it is a prefab basement. Well insulated - cool in summer (naturally) easy to heat in winter. When possible or desired I will build a work area next. Then cliff house
