G Body Manual Steering Swap

How to swap a manual steering box into a GM G Body car '78-'88. This should work on any G body car. Also a sunny, long test drive.

I pretty much did cold start this one in the video, but I actually sorted the choke out on it so it always fires right up lol.

Nice video. I have a 79' malibu and my steering box is already fucked (it was originally manual and the rack an pinion are worn out). I need to find a new steering box but the ones on internet cost an eye. Now I'm going to search one from a s10 in the junkyard. Thanks for the tip.

Yeah the s10 boxes bolt right up, you could use an older style Saginaw 565 box too but they aren't as straight forward to use.

Before watching this video, I've done this mod on my 78 malibu with a 83 s10 manual steering box, out of a 4 banger. Great decision for a car that doesn't run, I did it to weigh less and remove a power robber from my stock motor

I basically just did it for simplification, plus the original power steering stuff was all worn out and leaking everywhere so it just gave me am excuse to give it a try lol

Very informative video ! Is that a steering stabilizer I see on your front suspension ? If so can you show how it is installed ?

This car doesn't have a steering stabilizer on it, but it also seems to drive well enough to not necessarily need one. It does need some new sway bar bushings though, I'm certain they are the factory ones, or lack there of maybe I should say haha

Went ahead and bought the kit from Speedway, i could not find an s10 box at all. 525 box with a new pitman arm

Yeah the s10 boxes are kind of hard to come by, which surprised me I figured junkyards would be loaded with them.

Anyone who drives one at 140 or better will know exactly why you switch to manual. That 1 finger steering isnt that fun at the big end of the track.

Will the manual box work with the stock steering rod??

Yes! If you want to leave the stock intermediate shaft it will bolt right up

If I remember correctly 95-05 2wd. The AWD shafts are different I believe.

@@darkside2521 It works good! I got lucky finding the steering box at a junk yard and the intermediate shaft didn't take much modification.
