Come along as I try out the power to manual steering conversion for the first time. I honestly don't remember ever driving a manual steering car before!

I had a 93 Geo Metro with factory manual steering and no A/C. It still got 35mpg with a blown head gasket at 200k miles, consuming oil and water like crazy on a 4500 mile trip.

Was waiting for skids. So restrained on that freeway merge - better man than me lol. Manual rack turned out mint!

@@user-hn1bq3sy9b 1984. No carb. Fuel injected and supercharged: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jaKonHWQgM9jn9U At the end of the video you can see and hear the pass from inside the car. What makes you decide to convert from power to manual? I have a couple of my own answers, but I want to hear it from you. I'm about to do the same thing too with my mini truck...

There was a lot of hand jobs it this video hahaha! So was it worth it? Given the chance would you do it again? And also when you turn the wheel , does it feel notchy?
@AlexLTDLX5 жыл бұрын
Lol. Yeah, I'd do it again - it's worth it just to get rid of the leaky old pump and rack and to clean up the engine. It doesn't feel notchy. There is a little play in the form of gear backlash that's more noticeable without power assist - but that's in all racks. You can adjust that with the big nut that's on the rack itself. I even made a special wrench to turn it, but it got tight with less lash. We're talking about a very, very slight amount - about 1-2 degrees rotation. I injured my shoulder recently, running a manual rack can be challenging with a shoulder injury - it's finally getting better (took almost two months), and I'm all for making this thing a comfort palace, so an electric assist unit will be going in at some point. Now if I can only find the time to finish the headers and get it back on the road, I'll be a happy man. I've finally gotten to the point where I can do stuff in the garage, tons of other projects, work and life have gotten in the way recently. There will be more videos coming, just bear with me while I get through this stuff.

AlexLTDLX do you think you’d recommend this ratio vs the 20.1
@AlexLTDLX5 жыл бұрын
@@Texas_Road_Warrior I'd recommend it if you're open tracking or going to add an EPAS setup down the road. Or if you're a physical beast with 18" biceps. 20:1 is probably better for most street cars staying manual.

how hard is it to park with manual steering?
@AlexLTDLX4 жыл бұрын
This is a quick ratio rack, so it's actually pretty stiff. I wouldn't want this in a daily driver. But since I intend to add an EPAS system, I'm okay with it for now.
