I daily my 86 442 it has the 8.5 in it. And I'm going to switch it out and put a built Ford 9 inch in it but I'm adding 2 inches on each side for frame clearance and putting 18 inch rims on it 9.5 wide in the back and 8 inch wide in the front. The only thing holding me up at the moment is I need a ring and pinion gear and cut to fit 31 spline axles

A ford 9inch housing setup for gbody stock length axles would cleared a 9.5 width wheel no problem with the right backspacing. My gbody has ford 9inch with stock length axles plus 17x9.5 and it clears no problem.

1986 Olds442- I've been running the 8.5" 3.73 10 bolt since 1996 when I put a '68 Olds 350 in it. Got to 12.40s with slicks and open headers by 2000. Over 800 passes down the quarter mile and still going strong (streep/strip-driven to the track). I replaced the limited slip diff back in 2007. I suppose it might be around 400HP at the crank. Either I've been lucky or the 8.5" 10 bolt is adequate for 400hp and tolerates drag slicks. Must be part luck because I've also used a turbo 350 with stock components, even the intermediate sprage race, and only broke that once at the track and high gear took a crap once but it was still drivable home. The 9" makes sense with the value of the 8.5" 10 bolt, Im just too lazy at 60 to bother switching it and the drag racing days are slowing down.

Sounds like a good setup for your power level. Thats is enjoyable and fun without needing the upgrade of a ford 9inch. It would be different if you were planning to increase power level enough to justify the need for a ford 9inch to handle the additional power. Then it would be a different situation.

I have 3+ grand easy in my 9 inch. I built an 8.8 before and spent less than $1500 bucks (moser 31 spline axles, 31 spline posi, Richmond gear, Baer brakes). 9 inch isn’t the only way to go.
@gaspoweredgarage
@gaspoweredgarage Жыл бұрын
For all out high performance ford 9inch is the best option. There cheaper options out there but you have to constantly be upgrading the rear end when your power level increases at the same time. The reason i didnt do 8.8 as a option is due to stock needs c clip elimators or cut axle flanges off and convert to 9inch ends so axles don't slide out like chevy rear ends. Glad you found a cheaper option that works for your build.
@Lifeofshawn248
@Lifeofshawn248 Жыл бұрын
@@gaspoweredgarage with disc brakes the axles won’t slide out if the c clip fails. There are plenty of 8.8s in high hp builds.

IM ONLY running about 300hp LS in my Gbody, might Stage 1 cam it but nothing serious, SO i just need faster gears than stock 2.33 granny gears. Im told highest i can gear my 7.6 Rearend is about 3.08, that would probly be good enough, any higher then a overdrive tranny will be needed too.
@gaspoweredgarage
@gaspoweredgarage Жыл бұрын
Depending on if this is a daily /gas saver versus fun car changes what you use. If your car is a 3speed automatic use 3.08 or 3.23 for daily(good mpg/good acceleration), fun car use 3.42, 3.55 or 3.73 (bad mpg and even better acceleration). Reason people say don't go more than 3.08 gears with without a overdrive trans is due to rpms you run at high way speeds compared to a overdrive at highway speeds which is lower.

At the time I bought it years ago. It probably cost me 1,500 to 1,800 dollars for the housing, axles, and third member. Then the brakes from the junkyard probably about 50 dollars. So under 2000 dollars for my setup.

If your going to upgrade to a bigger motor or higher horsepower option down the road then ford 9inch is what I would recommend. If your keeping the 3.8 and enjoying your car as a daily or weekend car i would put a posi in the 7.5 rear end and a rear end girdle then call it good.

I have a 85 cutlass .. What about a 96 impalas ss rear end
@gaspoweredgarage
@gaspoweredgarage 2 ай бұрын
Here is the list on what is required for the fitment of a Impala ss rear end into your cutlass. Impala ss rear end is to long from the start, it uses different wheel bolt pattern than gbody. Would require cutting / relocating the spring perches and lower trailing arms bracket, and cutting / shortening axles tubes and then buying proper length axles.then if you do all that you might as well upgrade the oem posi third member to handle the power your cutlass is making currently or plans to make in the future. Which then circles back to it would be cheaper to start with a ford 9inch setup for a gbody instead.

From searching around to fit your budget here's what i came up with. 1- Ford 9inch housing and axles setup for 31 spline ranged from $940-$1200 shipped from quick performance racing on ebay. make sure it has the proper axle ends based on what brakes your going with. if your staying gm based brakes look for one with gm housing ends. 2- rear brakes is next which 98-02 camaro/firebird rear disc brakes is simple and cheap to get from your local junkyard or facebook market/craigslist. 3- to see how the stuff bolts and works with the ford 9inch brake wise i have a series call "better than stock brakes". episode 2 covers the brakes stuff the best for your setup. heres a link-kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6vamah9mbyWd6c. 4- Third member will depend on how your setting up your gbody.

If it has a stock 7.5 rear end then yes go straight to ford 9. It will be the best decision especially if you race or do burnouts / beat on your car due to the extra power gain over the stock engine. Sell the 7.5 before it grenades itself so it helps fund the ford 9inch.

Yes especially if your going to be over 300-400 horsepower. If your plans to be under 600 horsepower you could look at your local salvage yard for a police package caprice or impala ss and use that rear end to swap into yours or buy once and get a ford 9inch.

@@gaspoweredgarage i know someone on YT whos making more than that with a small block on nitrous in a box and has the 8.5. he also has a big block box but that also has the 8.5 but that DEFINATELY needs a 9 in and he knows it because ofthe amount of nitrous on the car. neither of those 8.5 are stock axles and they have trutracs
@gaspoweredgarage
@gaspoweredgarage Жыл бұрын
My response was assuming caprice / impala had a 7.5 stock like gbodys cars. then the police or ss package cars had the 8.5. But if they came with the 8.5 from the get go there good for 500-800 depending on if they have aftermarket axles and third member. Big block and nitrous cars are rough on rear ends so they need ford 9inch automatically due to the amount of torque that gets applied to the surface there driving on.
