The second half of this album is so underrated and lost in the New vs Old metallica fight- Dont tread on me, through the never, of wolf and man, the god that failed, my friend of misery, struggle within- ALL CERTIFIED PLATINUM BANGERS.

I think people misinterpret this sok h as support for "the war machine." But that doesn't align with almost every other Metallica song about war. Its kinda a critique in a way. But its closer to bands, mainly James Hetfields, Libertarian orientation, maybe as a response to those who would say they were anti-american or anti-military because of their "anti-war" songs. Although, i don't know if their songs were really anti-wsr rather than describing the experience of people who experienced it. If j had to guess, I'd say its basically saying "I'm rattlesnake." Dont fck with me and I won't fck with you. But if you want to go there and escalate it and provoke me, well I've BEEN ready.

I think I've heard them recently mention using Rocksmith, there is a section in the lessons called Palm Mutes 101 that explains it. Finding the right position and pressure with your right hand for a consistent sound can take a bit of work. A lot of the modern guys especially in the Djent genre will use a Noise Gate pedal for a really tight staccato P.M. sound.

Hé Lex, If you got an electric guitar the trick to getting that great heavy chunky sound is by putting the amp on the overdrive channel, full gain, bass 8, mid 2 trebble 6, put the guitar on the back pick-up , hit an open E while keeping the palm or side of your hand gently resting on the strings where they come up out of the guitar to mute the open sound and get chucking. And look up powerchords, they will be your metal friend.

Also, I think she is comparing hearing a palm-muted powerchord that‘s mixed with a heavy kick (and snare) to just playing guitar without drums. It’s just not gonna hit as hard without a kick /snare. Lex should try playing to backing track with drums to get that feel.

That sound, Lex. is created by muting the strings of an heavily distorted guitar. You place the edge of your palm (the meaty part of the same edge from which sprouts the little finger) against the strings near the bridge as you pick the strings. It creates a percussive sound, which has varying amounts of chonk depending on how many frequencies in the mid ranger are EQ’d in.

The heavy sound is achieved by using high gain on the guitar amp or using a guitar distortion pedal. Then you place your strumming/picking hand against the strings by the bridge while strumming/picking to mute them (palm muting).

2:09 Lex, that sound is very typical in heavy metal, and it's called 'palm muting'. Basically, you drown the strings very close to the bridge with the side of the palm while picking, and it makes that characteristic sound when the guitar is distorded with an overdrive pedal. You can still palm mute without distorsion, but it doesn't sound as heavy.

The chunky guitar sound that lex was talking about is called palm muting. The guitar player lays the back of their hand and pinky finger on the strings to keep the note from ringing very long. Then they lift it up when they want a chord or note to ring longer.

This is when Metallica changed their style. Hard Rocktallica in the '90s, mainstream rock, but went back to their thrashy metal ways in their more recent albums.

This was the first song I heard on the radio on 9-11 after the towers went down. It will always have a special place in my heart.

The short syncopated tight chords you are asking about is done by palm muting with the right hand. While the pick is striking the strings he dampening the strings with the back part of the same hand

It's truly a shame you guys haven't checked out anything from their last album back in 2016 (Hardwired... To Self-Destruct). Check out Moth Into Flame, Halo On Fire, Confusion, Am I Savage?, Murder One, and Spit Out The Bone from that album.

That sound is called palm-muting. You strike the strings but your palm is resting on the strings so has that crisp chunky effect.

I remember Howard Stern playing a version of this song that a fan sent in the day after 9/11. The fan edited in clips from the news from that day. Still give me chills just thinking of it. After it made me shed a tear I wanted to run through a god dam wall.
