I actually caved and brought the G9 QD-OLED on Amazon (while it was on a great sale!) almost 2 weeks now! It came very next day and setup was kinda straight forward. I’m really loving the monitor thus far. While my monitor updated itself (😩 Samsung always removing features) I don’t believe I can adjust peak brightness for SDR (least while an image is onscreen) on FW 1310. I have since turned auto update off. Overall, I absolutely love the 32:9 aspect ratio. While I initially wanted the 45 Corsair Xeneon Flex model, for the price I got the Samsung and the overall (potentially) better 2nd gen QD display, I’m certainly not losing any sleep over not having the prior. I know I wasn’t paying $1900 for ANY monitor, regardless how nice of PQ quality. For the price and the absolute gorgeous display of the Samsung, it simply can’t be beat.
@jeggzzzz5 ай бұрын
Just chiming in about the cable. When I initially got the monitor and set it up with my 30ft display port (specific requirements in my workstation unfortunately), the patchy white flickers were very consistent and persistent on anything above 60hz (120 or 240). Toning that down to 60hz (i know) alleviates most of it alongside disabling gsync. I still get them occasionally but it definitely IS the cable. In my first couple weeks with it, I did try it with a much shorter cable and the flickering was nonexistent in the 4-6 hours I was using it. IF it did flicker, it wasn't enough to even notice. Im just putting this out here since there's also some issues with QA reported all over the place including the DP port issue that causes these flickering. Otherwise, for my use case needing a single 30ft cable, I'm okay to sacrifice hz for it, but cannot reiterate from the video that the cables indeed matter. I'm still in search for a REALLY good cable capable of the travel and diminished bandwidth but will settle for the 60hz limitation in the meantime. My second one is flawless on a much shorter cable.
@chettystudios5 ай бұрын
@@jeggzzzz if I were you I would look into active cables if you haven’t already, or cables with a built in amplifier to amplify the signal. Usually anything over 15 feet will cause a loss of bandwidth, especially when you’re pushing 5120x1440 at high refresh rates, but an active cable will keep the signal strong the whole way through hopefully allowing for you to utilize the full 240hz
@jeggzzzz5 ай бұрын
@@chettystudios I used to use them before and they tend to fail since it has an extra thing to it. So I'll keep an eye out for better ones, but I'm totally fine with the 60hz, but thank you very much for the reminder! :)

Awesome video! However, I have a burn-in anecdote. I typically turn the monitor off when I'm done using the computer. One time, when I left for a few days, I forgot to do this AND I forgot to disconnect my remote desktop from the computer in the city I was in. When I got home, I was horrified to see my g9 oled on and in remote desktop view. I knew for a fact that I just burned the remote view picture into the monitor because it had been showing the stagnant screen for over a day. I've never been so happy to be wrong. I have not found a single sign of burn-in. These things are pretty fucking resilient.

I've never checked the temp from mine so not sure what's considered normal but I do notice it gives off quite a bit of heat in the back. Just to be safe I would reach out to Samsung to make sure that's not out of the norm, but as long as it has enough room to breathe I would say its okay

I got this monitor not too long ago and I found most of your settings are actually defaulted now bar brightness(max out of the box) and the colour tone(Natural is just default at 0 across the board). I used the standard colour calibration - HDR calibration doesn't appear on Windows 10 for me for some reason - and it looks fine. I'm using the DP cable that came with it and haven't experienced any issues but some options are greyed out for me so I do wonder if this is a setting I've enabled somewhere separately or because it's DP instead of HDMI(I've heard from different sources that DP is better and delivers higher picture quality, something about transfer speeds being faster still on DP rather than HDMI). I'm with you re recommendation of this monitor to others: Don't buy it if you're at all hesitant at dropping this kind of money on a monitor. It's a big monitor, looks great, feels premium and, honestly, old games look absolutely amazing on it(Surprisingly a lot of older games support 5120x1440p) and FPS games like Battlefield look and feel very good. Older games look a lot newer, a lot better and it pretty much gives them a new lease of life which really surprised me. The major negative is it's just too costly and you're going to have that OLED burn in question hanging over your head. 1,000 bucks or more is a big price tag that shouldn't be taken lightly. For the burn in I changed some settings for static objects such as the task bar: This is set to hide. Pixel Shift(Monitor setting) is on(It literally shifts the screen up/down and to the right/left) every few minutes. I've not noticed it while actively using the screen but I've noticed it if I'm staring at the screen on my desktop. I also set windows to turn off the screen after 15minutes of inactivity. If you're using your monitor for gaming where there's a lot of movement you generally shouldn't have to worry about burn-in but if you're using it more for productivity for hours upon hours on end I'd be very worried to use the monitor. For me: Gaming = Yes / Productivity = In limited quantities.

is it posible to use only small portion of the screen to save energy and the OLED itself? Let's say using the middle of the screen as regualr 1080p screen
@chettystudios8 күн бұрын
yes, but you would end up burning in the middle of the screen faster and have noticeable lines where the box is that you're playing in, so its best to just use the whole screen so you "burn in" the pixels evenly, which will result in you not noticing the burn in because the usage is spread out

@@chettystudios I figured it out. Basically whenever you run an application such as a game that doesn't support or have HDR enabled, g9 will reinitialise without HDR. Great video 👍. I have a few questions that I hope you may have answers to 🙂. I like to use Gsync. Samsung says that you MUST use DisplayPort for this and that it is not compatible with HDMI. Do you have any feedback on this? Do you not have Gsync on in Nvidia Control Panel with your HDMI cable? Game Mode seems to automatically switch on Gsync compatibility (adaptive sync). Should you also have VRR switched on too? I am confused as to why this setting is optional.
@chettystudios2 ай бұрын
@@waynestorton1875 I use gsync with HDMI, I think it wasn’t officially gsync compatible at first but it is now. The reason you would want VRR off is because it causes a weird flickering with OLED monitors because of how fast the response time of the pixels are. Some monitors are better with this than others, and some people are more sensitive to it than others. My advice is to try both. If you’re having severe screen tearing then turn VRR on. If VRR is on and you’re experiencing what they call “VRR flicker” and it’s bothersome, then turn it off. Personally I don’t notice the flicker in game so I have VRR on for gaming, but while using a photo or video editing program it’s much more noticeable so I turn it off.

I applied your recommendations here on my new Samsung G9 OLED S49CG932SN, which for some reason does not come with a remote and has a different UI, setting names yet seems to have the same specs as the one here. Like for instance, it only has three levels of color scales to change on RGB instead of the 6 you have here. With the settings here applied (except I kept color settings at 0,0,0) with HDR on and Auto HDR off. I don’t understand why we would want that off? With that off, each time I open a game now, instead of automatically applying HDR to the game, I get a pop up informing me that HDR is available but Off and it would benefit having it on. 😅
@chettystudios8 ай бұрын
There's 2 models of the G9 OLED, one with the "smart" features and interface and one without. I believe the one you have is without, which is why there's no remote/settings are a bit different but the panel itself should be the same. For the Auto HDR I had mine off because it's purpose is to take SDR content and apply a new tone map to give it an HDR look, and although it does a good job most of the time, for the sake of keeping things standard while setting things up I didn't want it to apply any "effects" on top of the image. You can definitely mess around with this once the monitor is set up as it may make some SDR content look better, just keep in mind that Windows is applying a new tone map, on top of the tone map you've already set on the monitor, so if things do start to look oversaturated or highlights blown out that's the reason. The most common complaints I've seen is that it makes certain programs/software while not gaming look blown out and oversaturated and the common fix for this is setting up a hotkey to turn it on/off when using it for gaming/not gaming.

It has a Panel Care screensaver after 2 mins as I understand it but I want a fully blacked out low power state which will automatically turn on when I mess with the mouse/keyboard. Cheers.

Not a dumb question! You'll have to set it on the PC to turn off the screen after a certain amount of time, and I believe with this display you'll get a countdown timer then the screen will go into standby mode

@@chettystudios Ohhh, thanks a lot! I had no idea about that. I just finished the setup, and it’s much better now. May I ask you one last thing? I’ve been testing it for gaming as well. Sometimes, depending on the game, when I try to go back to the desktop, it gets stuck on a black screen for a very long time. Yesterday, I received a message about the GPU (I’m using a 2080 Ti) after getting stuck for so long. Should I consider upgrading my hardware, or could it be related to the cable (I’m using the one that came with the monitor), or is there an issue with the monitor itself?
@chettystudios26 күн бұрын
@ it’s a problem all nvidia GPU’s have with this monitor. The monitor uses Display Stream Compression in order to transfer such a high amount of data at such high refresh rates and there’s a bug with NVIDIA GPU’s on any monitor utilizing DSC where alt + tabbing will cause black screens. It’s unfortunate, but until Nvidia releases a patch, the only way around this is to run game in windowed borderless

@@anicomx4 It's all about compatibility with the GPU. Nvidia has stated it's a known issue and they're working on a fix for it but its been quite a while and still no fix. Hi, I recently purchased this monitor, and your videos have been very helpful. However, the screen was glitching, and the monitor’s OS indicated a port issue. Samsung’s customer service was unable to diagnose the problem. Following your suggestion, I tried using HDMI 2.1 cables, which so far seem to have resolved the issues. But I have two questions for you before I decide whether to return the monitor: 1. Since getting the monitor, it has been making a popping noise while in use. Did yours do that? 2. When I first received my monitor, every time I powered it on, the screen would display “Samsung Odyssey OLED”. Now, it only shows the shutting down animation when I turn it on. Is this normal behavior after a while, or is my unit faulty? Thank you!
@chettystudios8 ай бұрын
Glad the cable helped! I forgot to mention I too had the port issue indication when running the troubleshooter in the OS at first. For the popping, this isn’t something I’ve experienced but I would definitely email Samsung about it to make sure it’s just the speakers turning on and not something more serious like a faulty power supply or something that could catch fire over time. And as for the power on, this is normal, I don’t see any text on screen when powering it on, just the horizontal “shutter” effect if the PC is already turned on and a blue screen if the PC is just being turning on and waking the monitor from rest until I get Windows Login Screen

@nickclark38619 ай бұрын
In my opinion this one because oled just looks so damn good. But your clearly want to spend money on this setup so Samsungs newest neo is this but in 4k, it’s 7680x2160 so 2 4k monitors beside each other, it’s around $3k I believe but if you really want resolution it’s great. I still personally recommend this one though there’s really nothing that comes close to oled in terms of quality.
@chettystudios9 ай бұрын
I second that I would definitely stick with OLED. If 4k is what you’re looking for there’s also quite a few coming out/already released this year in the 32” variant if you’re not already 100% set on UW that are worth taking a look at as well
@rustyshackleford41178 ай бұрын
If you can afford both, for the 4090 I'd recommend 65" or 77" 16:9 4K OLED that can do 120hz, for big screen/couch gaming. And for gaming with a mouse/keyboard at a desk, go with this G9 as you can't beat the 240Hz and superultrawide 5120x1440 32:9 resolution. Personally for gaming, I do prefer the extra width especially for FPS and strategy games, however for more cinematic games or 3rd person games, I like the big TV and additional vertical resolution. The pixel density from 1440p vs 4k is noticeable, however it's not a huge deal even sitting close to the monitor, it's a much wider gap from 1080p to 1440p. 4k does offer that bit of extra clarity, especially on a small monitor to where anti-aliasing type in games doesn't really matter anymore, but the extra width is a lot more immersive as the screen fills your whole field of view which does kinda suck you into the game when sitting close in a way a TV can't. If you really wanna hold out for a true 4K 32:9 OLED monitor, rumors are that next year Samsung will release an OLED with that ungodly double 4k resolution of 7680x2160, as they currently have a 57" monitor with that res but it's still a QLED/MicroLED type of tech. That said, that's probably about 9 months to a year out from now, but in either case that res would even bring a 4090 to it's knees, as it would be half the FPS of 4K.... The 5090 should be out by then though and may be a perfect match.

How is this vs a 4k 32" ips? I'm looking into OLED but I'm afraid the vertical resolution and sharpness compared to 4k makes me regret it
@chettystudios7 ай бұрын
There are quite a bit of 32” 4k OLED’s out at the moment so you could always look at those. Personally when I went from 4k to 1440p, specifically when gaming, I don’t really notice the resolution difference. However, in menus/surfing the web/etc I definitely can.
