Austin Rodarte I read an article one time, where Steve Perry said he would never be a judge on idol or any of the other talent shows. Randy Jackson asked him several times to be a guest judge. Steve said he didn't have it in him to tell someone they aren't good enough for the business. Especially after being told no so many times himself. I think it would be amazing if he did though, or as a mentor

He is such a humble, kind and prudent person. Which is another reason why I admire him not just as a singer but by his overall personality. It's very rare to see Steve Perry on TV or anywhere due to him living a reclusive life!

I read that too. I don’t know why he feels that way, he would’ve been excellent on Idol when it first came out. Steve is a perfectionist, and he’s also a thoughtful and articulate. But I think he detests any role in the public eye.

I understand that putting the mic out to the audience might show some level of stagecraft, but it also registers as vocal laziness to some audience members - a way of 'saving ' the voice. Best not done during a competition.

It's also true that the issues that come up when a woman tries to belt this song are somewhat different from what Steve experienced as a singer. Which she does, for an 18 year old. Steve Perry clearly think she killed it as well, so if you have nothing good to say, then don't say anything at all. That was painful to watch. Especially after seeing Steve Perry and journey several times. Actually met Steve Perry on the evolution tour I was in a band and we got backstage passes to be honest I thought his voice was studio manufactured autotune he was sitting in the back room strumming on the bass with a cup of tea warming up I was totally blown away he was so cool. Ever since then he’s been my favorite. My wife worked at the ticket office on their last tour I got front row seat tickets to the raised on radio tour. My sister wanted to sell her ticket to go see Van Halen I told her I would buy her a Van Halen ticket she was going to see journey. To this day Steve Perry by far is her favorite singer. But I will never forget as long as I live after he saying faithfully he stood there with tears streaming down his face. I looked over at my wife and said he just lost sherry, his mom just died. It’s over. A few months later I heard he walked off the raised on radio tour in Alaska. He was just done. I understand.

This is a great post. Thanks for sharing. Few people really understand the magnitude of Steve Perry's talent. He was on a very rarified plane as a singer. He had damn nigh perfect intonation live. I heard him live many times. During his prime years with Journey there was no singer alive that could do what he could do in the live setting with such incredible ease. It was like his voice just poured out of him like water. He was the best of the best live singers. That was what really drew me to him.

Okay I could be completely wrong in all of this. But here goes my opinion. First of all Steve Perry looked amazing. I don't fully believe that Steve would be making a comeback so to speak like he would get out and tour Etc he kind of left all of that behind but who knows maybe he's had a change of heart. But here's why I think that we could be in for something amazing from him. It's called marketing. Anyone who has been out of the Limelight for as long as he has has to get out there and throw themselves out in bits and pieces. They tease you a little bit with appearances they tease you a little bit with interviews Etc. He teases back in 2014 hasn't really been seen from since. I have a sneaking suspicion, and just take this for what it's worth just my observation, that he is throwing himself out there in bits and pieces so that he can tease people in entice people into believing in him with his new album. Whenever that happens to be released. We know he's been promising that for a little while now. And for whatever reason he's held it back. The little that I know in marketing I know that if you want to make a comeback or make a statement, you have to tease a little bit you have to throw a little bit out there to entice people you don't just throw something out there really big and hope that is going to make it big. Garth Brooks to the same thing after he retired and he wanted to come back. He got himself out there a little bit. He did some small venues in Vegas. Some smaller intimate type concerts and shows. Then he made his big step to come back and did his tour. I have a sneaking suspicion that at some point Steve will do the same thing. I really sincerely don't think he's going to be out there big touring like he did before I think he's kind of done with that. But I do think that he is teasing a little bit and marketing a little bit. Don't know the connection that he had with American Idol to be out there. I know he was asked at one point to be a judge and he said no he didn't think he could be objective. So they had connections with him. They obviously knew that Gabby was going to sing the song and For whatever reason they pulled him out. Just my speculations predictions whatever you want to call it my opinion. He looked incredible. He sounded amazing he looked happy. And showed so much class in how he comes out for a little things like this. He wouldn't be doing this kind of stuff if he truly wasn't an all-around classic kind of guy. She did a great job on the song. What a lucky lucky girl.

The connection is Randy Jackson. Randy played bass for the ROR tour. He was asked to judge by Randy when he was on/producing the show. Still has a connection, apparently. I agree, he's out there not because he cant just jump in WE KNOW THIS-he doesn't. Listen to his interviews enough, he just can't understand the love that the public has for him. He's made some recent steps, appearing on other people's social media-esp Sebastian Bach. He's going to do a multi city (larger cities) tour with a new album-bet on it. Won't be like Journey, those days are over and they are their own entity now. It will be all Steve Perry, nice and intimate venues. That's my prediction anyway.
