I love anything that improves energy efficiency since those improvements have a lasting effect on our monthly bills while also helping reduce my environmental impact. A few improvements that have saved me money this year are going all electric with our vehicles and charging them daily using our solar panels. Our gas bill went from $400 a month to $0. We've tried to seal air leaks in our home, jumped on a variable rate electricity plan, and will pre-cool our home ahead of a short window when electricity gets more expensive, and that's saved us about $50 per month in electricity. And whenever a major appliance dies, we'll replace it with an EnergyStar efficient upgrade. Our home is slowly becoming cheaper to operate and more comfortable.

I wont skip doctor visits. My dad finally went to the doctor after 20 years of not going and within months they found out he had stage 4 terminal cancer. He just made it to retirement age and he is in hospice because he is at the end of his life. Dont skip checkups even if you think you're healthy. Women should be getting cervical cancer screenings and mammograms from their 20s. Men need to be getting colonoscopies. Dont take the chance of cutting your life short by not getting preventative screenings. If they had caught my dads cancer early he might have lived to 90. Now he's happy he got 6 years and made it to 64. Without that blood test where they found he had anemia and detection he would have passed away already. We got 4-5 more years with him because he went to the doctor (finally) but we could have had way more.

Don't skip the doctor. Go to the dermatologist, get your skin checked, it can save your life. Teeth cleanings and check-ins are important since you have them the rest of your life. Get your eyes checked, reduce strain by seeing if you need glasses. If you're only looking at it from a financial standpoint, it is much cheaper to catch something earlier than deal with a bigger problem later.

When my kids were smaller we also saved 50% butttt they’re almost adults now and eat like adults, need clothes in adult sizes etc. To have 4 adults in the household with ”only” two salaries have proven to be tough when it comes to saving money. My kids pitch in with cooking etc and we love to have them home, of course but it’s not cheap. I did check some grocery prizes and for example butter is up 50% and potatoes are up 100% compared to pre pandemic so it’s seems to me like ”inflation” but mostly greed makes a huge difference in our grocery budget each month. We do already follow almost all of your tips as well. We do grow some food at home and for next year we really need to grow more with these prizes. We’re living in Sweden 🇸🇪

I love making things from scratch and when I get milk from the farm and we make our own yoghurt, we can save about 50%. Also the bread maker paid itself by now, the ice maker still has another season to got. But who wants to buy ice cream at 2€ to 2€50 a scoop when you can make it yourself for a fraction of the price with real ingredients and pick the exact flavor? Clothes are still though, so we will go to a flea market for kids cloths again for the next season.

When you’re looking at your insurance, make sure you aren’t over or under insured. Insurance is there to protect you, so take the time to figure out exactly what you need and make sure you are comparing apples to apples. Some companies might offer a lower rate, but that often means less coverage. Saving a bit of money now won’t really help if you end up underinsured.

One quality shirt that lasts 10 years is less expensive than 10 cheap ones that fall apart each year. Same with shoes. My shoes are over 20 years old. Buy real shoes and TAKE CARE OF THEM! If you can store it, when food is on sale, buy a stash! Yes you might have to eat boring food the rest of the month, but when you keep doing it. In time you're going to accumulate a variety of ingredients. I have a ridiculous variety of dry goods, a freezer full of food and a large dresser with home canned food. Nowadays I drive a hybrid and get 50mpg, and my car only has an 8 gallon tank anyway, so it definitely isn't worth it. Even if I save 50 cents per gallon, that's 4 dollars for an entire tank fill. I only fill my tank like every other week, I'm just going to stop at the most convenient station and not worry about the unlikely scenario where I save 4 dollars. Oh, and I specifically chose my car because it is reliable, affordable, and fuel efficient. I don't need to scrimp and save on gas costs because I already chose to save so much more money just by choosing my vehicle rationally.

And the budget is money ive "divorced" myself from. The purpose behind it is different. But the effect is the same. I still do get carried away with thinking of that cool new toy. But left to my own devices.. i don't rush out to the store to buy it like you might. Ill go to the store 500 times. Drool over it. Carry it to the cash register. I will do the complete opposite and focusing increasing my salary then save ton of money instead of bringing my life down to a crappy level where it’s no longer enjoyable.

Well. Its more about where do you find your joy. In materialism? Or something else? Yes. At some point you just need more income. And i do believe everyone should attempt to maximize that. But Minimalism isn't self sacrifice. Minimalist buy fancy toys too. But they go about it differently. Instead of buying every whim. They spend where it matters. I put all my whims on a list before i buy. Most of them i find later aren't important to me.. and i remove them. Every one i remove is money i don't spend. I would consider myself a Minimalist. The last several years ive averaged around 20k per year total spend. Thats everything. Vacations. House remodeling. House payments. Utilities. Food. Hobbies. I live quite comfortably. Most people who come over to my house probably think i spend way more than i do. Minimalism isn't about going without. Its about cutting out the garbage you don't need. Or learning to pause gratification for the right time. I have an expensive camera. Im not good at photography and theres no good reason for it. But i love taking pictures. Editing. Learning new tricks. So i buy the expensive camera because i can afford it. And it matters to me. Its something that brings me a lot of joy. But that new toy everyone has or my buddy just bought a camper. I have no interest in doing any of those things. So i don't. This alows me to instead buy more camera equipment. Like whats the point of buying a bunch of stuff to sell it in a garage sale later? Everything i own i use regularly. I have no junk nor clutter. I will never need a garage sale. To me thats spending failure. Except estate sales. I look at it this way.. buying your 4 walls is actually pretty inexpensive regardless of the nay sayers. Mathematical around $7 per hour gets you the basics around most cities ive lived and looked. A little less actually. But thats Your 4 walls. With exception.... Everything after that is a choice you make. If your miserable on your current income. Your choices are 100% to blame. The math tells you unequivocally this is the reason. Thats not to say again.. you shouldn't maximize your income. Do that! Make a million bucks! But your miserable because you chose to be. You also can choose not to be miserable.

I get that this advice works on an individual level. But on a macro-economic level, this is awful. Our entire potlical/economic system is based on consumption. Think about sales tax on every purchase. Having money in the bank collecting interest does nothing for the economy. Yeah, I get that banks use your money as collateral to borrow more money and invest it in stocks. I guess that this probably explains why the stock market doesn't reflect the real economy. There's a whole lot of savings and the money doesn't move around. It's less work and risk to collect interest doing nothing than start a business. Eventually, everything will crumble but the stock market will be doing fine.

If you have a low mortgage rate, its stupid to pay off your mortgage early. Instead put more towards 401k or IRA.

I maintain around a 70% savings rate and I still spend like I'm in Congress 😂 Just make a high income. Simple as that.
