Despite the violent history most of the people I met were very down to earth and would give you the shirt off their back. There are great places to hike and enjoy the rivers and mountains. El Salvador has made great progress and their future is looking up. As you get out of the residential area and explore you will really enjoy the sights. The people serving the food assume everybody knows how to eat pupusas, but they should explain a little bit, like you don't need fork. For $5 a Gringa is a flour tortilla taco. So basically, a quesadilla with either beef, pastor, mixed, or vegetarian. Mar y tierra is surf and turf. Pupusa revuelta is frijol queso y chicharrón. Another popular one is pupusa loroco, which is a flower similar to asparagus. Eat them with your hands. Pull a piece off and pick up some curtido and por some tomato juice on. Those beers were cheap, but pupusas can be found for 50 cents from stands around the city.
